Rain, rain, and more rain

Come to South Wales, once it starts to rain it forgets how to stop, thank heavens for new roof!

We're lucky here at the moment - after hardly any rain for nearly two years this place has suddenly turned into Camelot where it rains at night and the sun shines all day. We've had some flooding near us, with a few roads closed, but so far no major problems.

It's nothing like it was in E Australia with the terrible floods earlier this year and the consequent damp and mould problems. I am apprehensive it will happen again.

La Niña typically increases the chance of above average rainfall for northern and eastern Australia during spring and summer.

It's the third La Nina event in a row. This is rare, but not unheard of. Triple La Ninas have also occurred in, for example, 1973–1976 and 1998–2001. I heard about the floods - a dd and 2 Gdcs are currently in the Sydney area.

We had an epic rain- and thunderstorm here yesterday, with ferocious winds thrown in.

Instead of going for a walk earlier, when it was warm and sunny (as I did) my daft dh left it until very dark clouds were looming, there were already spots of rain, and I’d told him I’d already seen lightning!
He took himself into a thickly wooded area of our local park - where there are masses of huge, old trees. And came back very wet, but otherwise unscathed. Twit!!

Yes, my family live in various places along the East Coast.
Brisbanites are still recovering from the lasting effects of the floods earlier this year.

In the south of England I can only say 'thank God for all the rain and long may it continue.'

Like so many other places, our problem has been drought, not flood and our reservoirs are empty and our ground waters depleted. We need as much rain as we can get to refill reservoirs and ground water sources.

It's a continent with a bushfire season in certain areas so yes, there will probably still be bushfires this summer.

Well yes Callisremon, my daughter lives in the Blue Mountains so I’m well aware of bushfires…but let’s hope that the rain has had an effect and that the bush won’t be quite as dry as other years.

The thing is ,when we get rain like this we also get a lot of undergrowth which is fuel for future bushfires. The two things kind of go together unfortunately. We just live with the fact that nearly every year somewhere in my state will get a bushfire. I wouldn’t live in a forested area for quids. One of my daughters lived in a gorgeous area but, sure enough, they were completely burnt out and lost everything in a major bushfire about 10 years or so ago now. Joys of living here I guess.

They used to be able to clear the undergrowth (prescribed burning) but I understand that has been restricted or even banned now?

They still do it in many areas, Cal. They are more careful now because a few fires have started because of it. Nothing like as much as they used to, I think the air pollution was a bit of a problem sometimes.

It's finding a balance I suppose.

Our poor DD2 and SiL have already lost their home in Brisbane as it was completely submerged in the floods earlier this year. They lost everything bar a few personal/sentimental items. All that stands on their plot is the shell of the house waiting still for decisions to be made from insurance and government. Meanwhile they are paying a ridiculous amount of money on rented accommodation. The last thing they need is more heavy rainfall!

The poor loves. It is horrible and not much you can do . Horrible damp up the walls, everything ruined with a vile smell. Hope they get help from govt and insurance.

The same here in New South Wales. Rain and storms every day. With terrible flooding. This is Spring!

Thank you nanna. They don’t even have walls now just timber structure. A huge clean up to clear so much mud and dispose of all their furniture and white goods. Industrial heaters were brought in to dry it before stripping out walls and DD tells me it is raining again!

It is a slow process waiting for insurance and government who are inundated with so many families in this heartbreaking situation.

Thinking of your poor family Kalu,they must be devastated.
