I also do mine online at least I can keep an eye on things and cancel stuff if it's gone up or I find it cheaper.

The trouble is that most of the stuff I buy is essential and is already price-matched with other supermarkets, so I doubt if it is possible to more cheaply elsewhere.

Well I think the supermarkets are taking the pxxx they are charging what they want and the shelves are empty.

Same here sweetcakes. I order most of my groceries online, so I have a record of prices and what I've spent. I can go back and remove items when I'm way over budget. Until the beginning of the year, I budgeted on £20 a week for food and I usually stuck to it. I'm now struggling to spend less than £30pw, unless I want to buy carb rich "filler" food, which for health reasons I don't.

Well I'm still getting less and less each week for my budget despite using the offers, saving my vouchers for Christmas, luckily I'm going to Ds Christmas day and Dd Boxing day. I can't wait for this miserable year to end.

My turkey mince definitely dropped in price but the bread was so expensive. I do like a brown, crusty loaf-this cost £2.35, It has increased by £1. I will be resorting to 2 Ryvitas with marmalade soon.

Going back to the OP, I never buy rice, sugar or orange juice, so price reductions are no use to me.

The price of everything I do buy, especially milk, yoghurt and cottage cheese, seems to have increased dramatically.

I was talking with somebody who was at a BP share holders meeting and the subject of windfall tax came up. The speaker told the meeting that the company wanted a windfall tax, but had been told by the government to invest the profits instead, so that it didn't have to pay tax. The problem for BP is that it can't suddenly invest the money on projects which would be useful because that takes long-term planning and skilled staff, which it can't magic out of thin air. BP can't lower prices because prices depend on world prices.

I'm not sure I see BP as the "good guys" here, but it does seem to show that long-term planning is needed and that can only be instigated by the state, which has control over the training needed for people to work on renewables and more sustainable technology. Energy prices and supply can't simply be left to the market. The country desperately needs an energy strategy.

According to today’s news, a windfall tax on energy companies is ‘not being ruled out’.

IMO they’ll have to do it, in order to assuage at least some of the anger over fuel prices.

Arguments against say that profits are needed for investment in green energy.
You’d think they could spare some of their billions anyway, though.

More concerned about petrol /diesel ,my son has a long journey every day to work ,fuel is still sitting at £1.89.9 per litre .Its shocking !
Meantime Shell have announced record profits and even the BBC have (allowed) someone to question why they dont pay SOME tax on their profits .
Its a mess .
Why are they allowed to be tax free while prices are soaring to levels that are frightening for millions .THIS is an energy rich country yet we're paying extortionate prices for what is a necessityand the rich get richer every day

Not in any shops I have been to

…according to today’s Times.

Rice, -0.2%
Granulated sugar, -0.3%
Beef mince, -7.4%!
Orange juice, -8.9%

Time to make a few batches of my multi-purpose, semi-veggie mince, then - with a few additions it can turn into either chilli or bolognese sauce.
