Do facial moisturisers do any good?

Well, I have never used moisturisers or face cream on a regular basis and there is nowt wrong with my skin.

Yes, I have wrinkles, but show me the 70 year old who doesn't-

If my skin does feel dry, or my cheeks chapped after being out in a cold wind (like today) I do rub a little cleansing cream or a home made lotion on, but that is all I have ever done.

So yes, in my book, moisturizers, hair conditioners, after-sun lotion, fabric softeners are all a waste of money, but each to her own.

I’m seventy in January and I don’t have any wrinkles. I have very minor laughter lines at the outer corner of my eyes but you can get those at any age. I do look after my skin but most of it is down to genetics. Both my parents had good skin and looked much younger than their ages.

I couldn't not moisturise. If i dont my skin also feels tight and sore. I think it helps a lot.

grandtanteJE65 could you manage a little more humility. You are very fortunate to have such robust and adaptable skin, but many of us if we followed your routine would have badly chapped and cracked skin leaving it open to bring in topical and internal infections. The reason anyone starts using moisteriser is because they have a problem with dry sore and cracked skin. You have been very lucky not to have this problem.

By the way could someone tell me exactly what the average woman for any age over 60 looks like. I would say that how people look at any age, especially older ages, is so varied depending on their different life experiences, genetic inheritances and state of health that it is completely impossible to describe how the average or typical woman of any age from 60 onwards.

I like to think I look good and well cared for and am aging well, and none of this nonsense about looking younger than you are. People who say this to an older person are themselves the victims of their own beliefs in inaccurate stereotypes.

I’ve tried most high end creams over the years but now use the Aldi Caviar cream or any natural facial oil. Happy with results and often thought to be younger than I am but, as others have said, good genes must play a part in this.
I use any residue on my neck and chest but don’t seem to get the same results, maybe I need to use an area specific cream 😉

I agree about Aveeno. I started washing my face with the Baby Hair and Body wash after a doctor at the eye clinic recommended washing my eyes in baby shampoo to stop dry eyes and blepharitis. It works for my eyes and for the rest of my face. Totally non drying, and my skin is naturally dry. I do moisturise and have done since my teens, but after trying the expensive brands I now use anything I can pick up at the supermarket, Olay, LOreal, Nivea etc. I don’t bother with night creams or serums or special eye or neck creams having wasted money on them in the past. I have also used silk pillowcases for years and find they make a difference to my face and hair.
One thing I swear by is an anti crepe cream from the USA that I buy on Ebay, it massively improved my crepey arms in a couple of days. I use it every night before bed. You get a big tube of it for around £25 depending on exchange rate. Postage is free. I have mentioned it before but for those interested it's called Gold Bond anti crepe cream ( or something like that)
I’ve been using it for about three months and still on my first tube so I think it’s good value too.

AhannahLoisLuke I use Aveeno Baby Nourishing cream on my forearms as well as my face and neck. It has smoothed out the crepe looking skin. Put on night and morning when I do face.

No one has mentioned smoking, as far as I know, and that bathes your face and neck in wrinkle causing chemicals, especially round your lips. If you've never smoked, chances are your facial skin will look a lot better than a smoker's or former smoker's, whether or not you use moisturiser. My parents both smoked when my sisters and I were children but none of us took it up, fortunately.

I did mention smoking lizzy but it was way back on thread. You are right of course.

Totally agree, lizzypopbottle, I can spot a smoker or former smoker a mile away.

I use The Body Shop vitamin e cream and I have done for many years, I occasionally buy expensive moisturisers, serums, anti ageing, anti wrinkle creams with retinol, hyluronic acid etc etc. But have come to the conclusion none work except a decent face cream to avoid dryness and I like the vitamin e cream the best.

I've used the BShop vit e cream for 20 years , it makes an enormous difference to my skin and even made the broken veins dissappear after about a months use .

Years ago I watched a tv programme about skin and moisturisers. The dermatologist said use an inexpensive moisturiser as it makes absolutely no difference to your skin if you buy an expensive one. Now of course they have SPF factors which must help to protect our skin from sun damage.
Psychologically, an expensive nicely fragranced cream may give us a lift?

Read in the papers yesterday that L' Oreal spend many Billion of $s a year promoting its products.

That in itself is a good reason not to use branded products, half the cost is the cost of advertising it.

I sometimes watch a plastic surgeon on YouTube who teaches people how not to have plastic surgery ie how to look after their skin. He once said not to pay for expensive moisturisers, just to find one that suits your skin. They don't do anything long term as they don't go deep enough into the skin but they do provide some hydration and protection on a daily basis.

I now use organic rose hip oil from New Zealand which I bought cheap in TK Maxx. My facial skin feels very smooth. I also read it can help age spots be less pronounced so I’ve been putting it on an age spot on the back of my hand. I think it has faded a little and is not quite so noticeable.

I use that vaseline spray and if I didn't I'd have the skin of a rhino

Another vote for good old fashioned cheap Nivea .
Nivea and a sunblock is all I use .

I cannot use Nivea, I have an allergic reaction to one of the chemicals they use. This is my problem with many of the branded products, cheap or expensive. This is why I use an organic product bought online.

Just looked up tretinoin cream. This is what I read. Tretinoin is a medication used to treat acne and sun-damaged skin. It can't erase deep wrinkles, but it can help improve the appearance of surface wrinkles, fine lines, and darks spots. Tretinoin is also known as retinoic acid. It's the generic name for synthetic vitamin A.

It is also only available on prescription, Tretinoin cream is a medication prescribed by doctors for severe cases of acne. Certainly not a product to be self precribed to make a cosmetic face cream.
