I saw it this morning and was very moved by it. I felt John Lewis were highlighting things that matter.
What do you think ?

Froglady Sat 12-Nov-22 12:32:04

I really liked it.

Fae1 Sat 12-Nov-22 12:38:44

It's the Christmas story! "Is there room at the inn?" - a very clever advert, and like all effective adverts will no doubt increase sales.

BlueBelle Sat 12-Nov-22 12:39:05

I didn’t get it either Kate it was very dark and I just saw a man skateboarding around and practising …and wondered what’s that had got to do with Christmas ….did I watch the right one ? what made people cry about it? a child taken in for a Christmas holiday period, surely that’s a happy thing I d cry if she was sitting alone on the pavement cold and wet with people passing her by ….ah well… just me
I ve never been in a John Lewis store

DC64 Sat 12-Nov-22 12:39:16

Just beautiful 😭

Scottiebear Sat 12-Nov-22 12:44:22

Yes. I thought it was a meaningful advert.

Theoddbird Sat 12-Nov-22 13:09:36

A thought provoking advertisement...

annsixty Sat 12-Nov-22 13:10:25

Did nothing for me I’m sorry to say.
I seem to have had a warm and sentimental gene removed.
I can’t find anything making me tearful or even slightly moved.
Is this old age or feelings absolutely spent after my H died?

BlueBelle Sat 12-Nov-22 13:19:11

I m with you totally annsixty I know I haven’t lost my empathy gene because I can cry at the drop of a hat but I don’t see anything at all to cry about there
Funny how we all perceive things differently but I m with you it’s not a sad ad
And of course it’s commercial for John Lewis’s benefit or else they wouldn’t waste all that money every Christmas the amount of which totally irritates me

rowyn Sat 12-Nov-22 14:06:55

SOme people may find it moving, and it would be in another context, but to me it's crass. A large and successful business is using the sadness of a child's life to encourage well - heeled people to spend a fortune in its shops at Christmas.

Tanjamaltija Sat 12-Nov-22 14:27:35

Enjoy a whole slew of them, here: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=John+Lewis+Christmas+ad&&view=detail&mid=DDFCB2B25AD3336BBE50DDFCB2B25AD3336BBE50&rvsmid=77CFA28F21AC02880E2F77CFA28F21AC02880E2F&FORM=VDQVAP

I don’t lean to sentimentality about looked after children. I know their stories. I’m still in touch with a woman now 52 who I met under similar circumstances to those shown in this advert. We’ve talked about it and her life story over many years. (She’s doing well )

I watched this ad and was weeping as the child walked in to her latest, hopefully, permanent placement. These children need their stories highlighted. I’ll write to my Tory MP again

Kate1949 Sat 12-Nov-22 14:29:38

Like you annsixty it takes a lot to make me cry. Perhaps we have no more tears left.

Tanjamaltija Sat 12-Nov-22 14:54:55

So... yes, it is an advert. But, you need not go to these shops to get your things... maybe it's time to look around and see who needs something, anything - empathy, love... a bag of shopping... a outing... a meal...

kircubbin2000 Sat 12-Nov-22 14:55:32

Not sure what they are actually advertising. We don't have John Lewis so wasted on me!

JaneJudge Sat 12-Nov-22 14:59:13

I like it too. There also needs to be more foster care for children who either have a disability and need respite or even young carers who need respite themselves too. We seem to have gotten into a situation in this country where support isn't given and families are ground down and exhausted in complex home situations.

The warm, caring image? So people think, "What a kind, responsible shop, I'd better go and order all my Christmas gifts from there."

JaneJudge Sat 12-Nov-22 15:05:11

I think they have a reputation for that anyway?

susieboo Sat 12-Nov-22 15:09:15

I didn’t think much to it either .

It is a bit more than an advert for the brand OP.

Email below explains a bit more :

At John Lewis and Waitrose, we believe everyone deserves a fair start in life. But sadly, that’s not the case for many young people who grow up in care. That’s why we’ve launched our Building Happier Futures fund, which aims to provide help and support to young people from care, now and in the future.

This Christmas, you'll be able to donate online* to our charity partners, Action for Children and Who Cares? Scotland, and through Giving Trees** in our stores – and 25% of the sales from our Waitrose Christmas Yule Log* will go to the two charities. Plus, we're providing food parcels to care leavers attending Christmas dinners organised by the Gold from the Stone foundation.

In the long term, we're committed to helping young people from care find meaningful careers at John Lewis and Waitrose, or supporting them into higher education with scholarships. We're also asking the government to put fairer policies in place, so that everyone can have a fair start in life.

Please help us help young people from care this Christmas and beyond – thank you.

I thought so too JaneJudge until they rejected me for the new JL partnership card, so I am Mrs. J Grumpy about anything to do with them now! grin

GrammaH Sat 12-Nov-22 15:59:27

I'm with you joseanne - after years of believing JL was the epitome of warmth & caring, we recently had an extremely poor experience when trying to buy a little Christmas tree in a branch of said store. The service was terrible, nobody seemed to know what they were doing or how to get the tree to us. Then, when we were told the tree was available in store, after half an hour of fruitless searching, it wasn't. A further 20 minutes provided us with a different tree we didn't really want but couldn't be bothered to argue about, then another 10 minutes to swap all the paperwork over. I must say we had a very warm and caring response to our email of complaint but the staff were anything but. I think the advert is very sweet as it stands but could be anybody's - I wouldn't necessarily think John Lewis

merlotgran Sat 12-Nov-22 16:39:14

It didn’t do anything for me I’m afraid. It normally doesn’t take much to make me emotional but something must have been lost in translation.

Calendargirl Sat 12-Nov-22 16:47:42

I purposely watched the ad on You Tube after reading this thread as I hadn’t seen it on tv yet.

I didn’t find it remotely emotional, in fact if I hadn’t read about it I would not have twigged what it was all about.

Wasted on me.

magshard20 Sat 12-Nov-22 17:01:56

Not for me either, I really didn't "get it". Think the ads this year have been pretty poor, as if nobody in the production teams for any of the stores could be bothered!

win Sat 12-Nov-22 17:07:22

I did not get it either Kate I don’t think it is that good. In fact I think it is dull
