Oh, I will have a look for that, Blossoming.

Some of the most attractive human beings I have ever seen were Lady Boys in Thailand, absolutely stunning.
Fabulous figures and legs with waist length shiny thick hair.

The majority of those who we spoke to were gentle souls, sent down to the city for the top op in order to earn money to send back to their family in the village.

Do you mean they could work as protitutes?

Blossoming Sun 13-Nov-22 18:13:48

It’s by Hans Christian Andersen Parsley3 and there’s a good prėcis in Wikipedia (link below).

Volver
I Brian can take the piss by entering a beauty pageant, then as far as I’m concerned it’s open season.

"I think other people are being nasty so I can be too"

A credo to live by hmm

Lovely admission Volver dear. I’m glad you said it.
I’m sure if anyone else had said that they’d have been banned.

Brian’s a male. Brian won a prize in a female competition.
What does that say about Brian?

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy?

I'd be interested to know where you think the neutral ground sits on this one, volver?

A man enters a competition to find the 'ideal of American womanhood' and wins a scholarship that was intended for young women. He is not remotely 'feminine', and there is no suggestion that he has taken hormones or had surgery. He uses a male name, and describes himself as a 'queen', which is a term usually used by camp gay men to describe themselves.

It would have been bad enough had the prize been a trophy or a few hundred dollars, but it was a scholarship. I am not in favour of women having to display their bodies to compete for academic opportunity, but that does not make what Brian did in any way fair. It sends a clear message that there are no longer any ways for women to level the playing field (eg by leaving bequests of women-only bursaries), and is clearly sticking up two fingers to the women's movement.

This is a huge step (backwards or forwards, depending on your POV), so I can't see any neutral ground. Even a shrug and 'I don't care' is making some sort of statement, surely?

Oh hi Volver

I think it's great, she actually won for plus size women too.

I hope no one shakes her beauty

This ideal that women must look a certain way, to be considered beautiful has strong roots in sexism and its sad to see sexism perpetuated by women

Intersectional feminists understand this hence the intersectional

I'm not great at flouncing, more of a very self conscious shuffle away

One of my favourite films 😂

maddyone Sun 13-Nov-22 18:53:15

He’s not a woman! It’s that simple.

tickingbird Sun 13-Nov-22 18:55:58

At least you’re predictable with your flouncing Violet and Volver - you always return pretty quickly!

Mollygo Sun 13-Nov-22 19:02:24

So you think cheating is OK then VS and VD?
Does that apply to all aspects of life or just the ones you approve of I wonder.

🎶You could have flounced all night🎶 🥱

maddyone Sun 13-Nov-22 19:04:41

The idea that a woman must look a certain way is a topic very worthy of discussion, but since this discussion is about a man, then the discussion about women’s looks is not relevant.
I’m beginning to think I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole. Never would I have imagined that I’d be discussing the fact that a blatantly obvious male person has somehow won a female beauty contest. I don’t even agree with beauty contests, I think they’re demeaning to women. However they are part of American culture, and some other cultures, so that isn’t the point. But that normal people actually approve of this event, of a clearly male person even entering, let alone winning, a female beauty contest, well, I’m open mouthed in astonishment. What happened to women’s rights? What happened to feminism? Did the suffragettes seriously fight for this?

As for ladyboys, they are indeed beautiful. But this man is about as far away away from a ladyboy as the earth is from the sun!

MerylStreep Sun 13-Nov-22 19:07:06

Mollygo
Your good 😄

FarNorth Sun 13-Nov-22 19:08:23

Yes VioletSky let's hope some young women who don't fit the usual beauty standards will enter pageants and win.

The important point here, tho, is that a male person got a scholarship that was intended for young women.

Surely you, as a feminist, and volver too, would understand that there's still a need to address the disadvantages that face female people.
Giving the scholarship to a male person doesn't do that.

MerylStreep Sun 13-Nov-22 19:15:31

Excellent take on this fiasco.

HousePlantQueen Sun 13-Nov-22 19:15:53

So. On the basis of the lovely Brian being named Miss Whatever, could my beautiful daughter enter and win a drag queen contest? She looks like a woman, wears a frock well, is very skilled at doing her make.up and hair. Is the fact that she is female a reason for exemption do we think?

Baggs Sun 13-Nov-22 19:17:20

This ideal that women must look a certain way, to be considered beautiful has strong roots in sexism and its sad to see sexism perpetuated by women

Actually, I think it has strong roots in what's healthy. It's not for nothing that a good hip to waist ratio in women is regarded as beautiful. There are health reasons why good proportions are considered ideal. And, yes, sexual choice does come into it but that is biologically based: healthy-looking women with good, 'sexy' proportions are popular with the opposite sex for evolutionarily driven reproductive success which, after all, is what life is fundamentally all about.

volver Sun 13-Nov-22 19:21:20

Oh my goodness, the predictability.... 🤣

Blossoming Sun 13-Nov-22 19:22:57

Blatant sex discrimination HousePlantQueen.

Lathyrus Sun 13-Nov-22 19:25:23

Indeed.

Give point of view.

Disagree with different point of view.

FarNorth Sun 13-Nov-22 19:26:03

Just ignore the tittering at the back, class, and stick to the topic.

Rosie51 Sun 13-Nov-22 19:27:03

I think it's great, she actually won for plus size women too.

Perhaps you can point out the other 'plus size' contestants that made it to the finals? Was it just coincidental the only 'plus size' finalist was a male?

Being annoyed that a man was awarded the scholarship is not to endorse or not endorse the concept of beauty pageants, but to decry the misappropriating yet another award intended for a woman.
