Is this a step too far?

No, me neither.

What an absolute slap in the face for those who have battled to overcome their disabilities.

Yes exactly.

I’m afraid able bodied people cheating by entering or attempting to enter para sporting events isn’t new.

The Judges in the Beauty Contest need to be named and shamed IMO.

Agreed. They are clearly complicit in this. Or if not named and shamed, at least called to account and asked for the reasons behind their decision to award Brian the scholarship.

Mollygo Sun 13-Nov-22 23:32:30

If it’s like it is over here, maybe they’re afraid to tell the truth.

I still say the other contestants should have flounced noisily out when the winner was announced. All together whilst shouting the house down. That is the only way this nonsense can be stopped. People have to be prepared to stand up and be called names.

FarNorth Sun 13-Nov-22 23:59:14

The other contestants will be aware of the vilification they'd get if they did that.
Also they'll have been coached all through the contest, if not in their own lives, to accept men as women.

Doodledog Mon 14-Nov-22 00:10:12

There is also the pressure on women not to speak out, and to 'be kind'. When your career depends on your 'niceness', in public at least, it must be very difficult to complain.

Rosie51 Mon 14-Nov-22 00:16:18

We see it everywhere. People on here that are forthright even to the point of rudeness and bullying that are suddenly TWAW or 'keep quiet, don't mention science and reality', even when they thump the keyboard on 'facts' on every other thread.

Chestnut Mon 14-Nov-22 00:20:32

Well, okay, maybe not shouting the house down, but they should have all just quietly walked out without saying a word, leaving him alone on the stage. That would have made the point without getting themselves in trouble. If they say nothing then they can't be quoted as saying anything.

Rosie51 Mon 14-Nov-22 00:32:05

Nice thought Chestnut but I'd lay odds there would be a way to punish any woman who didn't clap, smile and otherwise acknowledge the absolute 'stunning and brave' constitution of Brian, who, masquerading as a female, managed to secure a scholarship that had been designated for a female. Go Brian! Legend amongst men! All I can hope is that karma is real and visits Brian really soon!

Only a certain sort of person would enter a beauty contest in the first place. I think they are having a lend of the lot of us and in particular that part of American society and good for them. In the words of McEnroe, “ you can’t be serious”.

Wyllow3 Mon 14-Nov-22 00:53:14

Should a scholarship be award on looks?

Should a scholarship be award on looks?

No, of course not. That women need to compete against one another in beauty contests to get scholarships is ridiculous, as has been said on this thread. But, as has also been said, the idea that a man can come and take even that opportunity from women is why many of us are annoyed.

FarNorth Mon 14-Nov-22 01:23:11

That's unkind.
When there's a scholarship on offer, the contest will attract those who can't afford an education.

nanna8 Mon 14-Nov-22 03:54:41

I wouldn’t know about that. I don’t live in the US. Not unkind, just the truth.

Oh dear - brings to mind a Young Socialist (Labour youth section), holiday camp back in the 1963 in Skegness. The holiday camp this was held in usually held one of these horrible 'Beauty Contests' so it still put on when thmey had all the rather progressive youngsters there. Most just ignored it, but when we found out that some were atually entering, we dressed up one of our lads to enter on behalf of Hackney YS (MISS YENKCAH).

He look magnificent - Stragiht down dresses were the rage and we found one for him to wear padded out with cotton wool (appropriately), A glittery evening 'stole' to cover his arms, sun hat tied on with wide ribbon for his hair, His main problem was trying to walk in quie low heeled sandals. He paraded happily round the pool with the others, until he tripped and fell in - hat and sandals all disappeared along with the stole and the cotton wool!!!! We felt the point had been well made.

So find it hard to believe that sixty years later these things are still being held!!!! Perhaps someone was making a point at this one!!!

Doodledog Mon 14-Nov-22 10:15:16

If that were the case, it would have been a more appropriate gesture to then award the scholarship to a young woman between 17 and 24 (as intended) who was financially disadvantaged and would struggle to get an education because of that.

I'm surprised there is not a legal challenge to the way the rules have been broken. If I had donated a scholarship for a particular demographic I would be furious to find it had been fraudulently allocated.

Mollygo Mon 14-Nov-22 11:23:20

I suppose they’ve achieved more publicity than they’d ever have achieved without a cheat winning.
I don’t suppose they care about the scholarship being won by fraud, but a challenge like you suggest DD would be a good idea.

HousePlantQueen Mon 14-Nov-22 12:06:40

So, if I chose to identify as a young black musician, could I be considered as a candidate for the MOBO awards? If Brian can choose to be a young woman seeking an educational award, could I choose to be a young black keyboard player without being able to play a bloody note? Or am I musing too far?

FarNorth Mon 14-Nov-22 12:20:01

Sounds all right HPQ.

FarNorth Mon 14-Nov-22 12:21:27

Maybe you could knock out 'Chopsticks' to show willing.

MerylStreep Mon 14-Nov-22 12:25:59

HPQ
I can’t see a problem. 😂

There are rules in place to stop this fiasco happening in the Miss American contest.
I bet Brian is gutted 😥
