Feeling out of step?

Bless me GN I cannot tell a lie but speaking from a distinctly minority position it seems I must confess the following GN sins-
I like Joules (also Seasalt, White Stuff, Boden and Emma Bridgewater, but have gone off Hotter) and I take exception to my style choices bring disparaged as frumpy
I still consult Delia, Nigella and Jamie-also Katie Stewart
I would not have Bisto in my kitchen - there are excellent stocks in sachets in the supermarket, including turkey
I don’t care for turkey anyway , would rather have a couple of ribs of beef
I hate Tesco and never shop there either in person or on line so I was happy to snooze through the wee small hours, as well as the big ones
I won’t even give a thought to Christmas decs until 10 days before the Day, and that’s only because I am having the whole extended family here on the 18 th, otherwise that would be “decorating” weekend
So as I said, clearly in a minority of one but I take comfort in the Scottish saying “They’re a’ oot o’ step except puir wee Jock”

Baffled by this obsession with Bisto. I have never used it. I used Burdalls for a while but have never done anything other that reducing wine and stock for, probably, 30 years.

Bisto is only claggy and sticks to your mouth if you use to much and make the gravy to thick. Just added to a tasty and delicious thin gravy, just to thicken it a bit, it is unnoticeable.

Not just palm oil (well it’s palm fat that’s listed) but at least 15 other ingredients including colouring Mollygo.
I prefer more natural ingredients personally.

Mollygo Wed 16-Nov-22 10:11:30

Auntieflo, it was the palm oil that DD lectured me about. I thought they were quick, and tasted OK, though I still preferred doing what Granmarderby mentions above, or mixing it with the veg water. So I was out of step one way or the other!

Well, I must be out of step. What is the matter with Bisto Gravy Granules?
Years ago I used gravy powder, but found it awful when I tried it again.
Someone will be along to enlighten me soon, I hope.

It's personal choice and I admit I haven't tried it for years but I found it claggy and tasting of saturated fat, it seemed to stick to the roof of my mouth.

I usually use stock (& wine if one is opened) thickened with cornflour, perhaps with a teaspoon of Bisto powder to add colour. Use meat juices if there are any.

Cornflour is a thing of the past, it seems (see other thread).

Perhaps I should try Bisto granules again for speed.

I think “ahh Bisto”gravy powder is meant to be used with juices from the meat tray by heating the tray over the hob, discarding the fat by tipping and spooning it out, mixing the gravy powder with some cold water to a paste then tip in to hot tin stirring vigorously until it looks and tastes nice ( with the addition of more water/ wine/ more meat juice from the rested meat) reheat in microwave. A bit faffy/messy but it has the edge on “plastic” gravy granules - imo of course😋

I’m out of step on GN when I read of all the baking going on. Same with crochet, knitting and sewing. Also house improvements. I say to myself “Call yourself a woman?”😁
I’d rather paint or draw a picture and get out of the house at every opportunity. Allergic to housework too.

In fact there is no such thing as being out of step in one’s likes and dislikes, being different makes the world go round.

I have a plaque in the kitchen which states -

I know I am in my own little world but I am happy here.

Whatever anyone else chooses to do, that’s up to them, whatever I choose to do is my decision alone. My taste may not suit everyone but I am not looking for approval or asking others to do likewise. I don’t own a pair of judgy pants either.😂
You never look frumpy Maw. If you were, you would never have directed me to the Sahara site, too tempting. 😉
Live and let live, life is too short to bother what others think.

Mollygo Wed 16-Nov-22 09:17:15

I have one pair of Hotters. I loved gravy granules until the lecture from DD, but I do use Bisto Powder.
I love Seasalt but am partial to the occasional garment from Bon Marché and even buy the occasional clothes from the outlet in the garden centre near us.😱
I like grocery shopping in any of the supermarkets or the little specialist butchers etc in town and I have to go into a Waitrose if I’m visiting somewhere that has one, just to see what I’m missing!
I like the middle of Lidl and the centre aisles of Aldi, whether I buy things or not.
I’m so out of step, that I had to google Birkenstocks to find out what they were.

Well for the first time ever I have put our tree up in November and it is full of twinkling coloured lights which make me feel happy every time I look at them. I bought extra ones so it is really, really sparkly.

I'm not out of step on here .I'm on a different planet in a different time scale .
Maybe I just need those rose tinted specs that so many seem to wear

OnwardandUpward Wed 16-Nov-22 08:57:36

I'm totally out of step and it's a good thing. This day will never come again. I don't get people who are making themselves unhappy trying to fit in or keep up with the Jones's. I think it's happier to stand out and be yourself because you'll be happier and who doesn't need more joy?

As the tv advert keeps telling us, "Britain has a shortage of joy", but we can create our own joy by doing what makes US happy.

MrsKen33 Wed 16-Nov-22 08:57:22

I started off long ago with the wrong first step. It seemed quite comfortable so I have continued with it. Why change, just for the sake of being like others. And as an aside I really dislike Joules clothes. I am a Seasalt, Toast and Plumo person with a large bit of eBay thrown in .

Oh dear! 🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣

I like Waitrose too
And Lidl
And Aldi
We went to Sainsburys last week because it was handy to where we were.
I've even been to Morrisons and Iceland!

I just like food.

You mean...there are "steps?"

Maybe its my choice of threads...

Fairly heavy Italian influences in my cooking fro DH's family. I use gravy granules, but the main flavouring is Marsala. If I want to check any technicalities I go back to Delia to check the numbers.

I've got an array of Hotter shoes in various colours because they are about the only things that fit my feet now. Clothes are mainly Joe Browns or Sea Salt from charity shops or Ebay. I used to wear mainly Per Una but they have gone sadly downhill now.

merlotgran Tue 15-Nov-22 20:36:35

Sorry. Ignore my post….Wrong thread.-

Never had a pair of Hotters, never had anything by Joules, not at all keen on Tesco and really loath Asda, sometimes I make my own gravy (which I prefer) and sometimes I use Bisto but mainly for OH who likes lots whereas I only like gravy in small quantities and totally agree with Farzanah regarding food swimming in gravy, horrible. I prefer to shop in Lidl, Sainsbury's, Aldi & Waitrose in that order, depending on which direction I'm driving. Christmas decorations used to go up week before, last couple of years earlier just to be seasonally jolly grin

That's where I have been going wrong. grin

I think there are enough of us out of step that we must be back in step - I think confused

OR:

"Everyone's out of step but me"

I’ve never liked Tesco. I grew up near Henley on Thames which had a Tesco and a Waitrose. My mother would never dream of going in Tesco and I think it rubbed off on me. I used to like Hotter but over the last year or two they seem to have changed. I shouldn’t worry though as I have over 20 pairs of shoes. Our Christmas decorations go up the week before Christmas and come down on 12th night. I love Bisto granules. Younger son discovered them when he was a student. My gravy is made with homemade stock and any vegetable water that is around and thickened with granules. Younger son also puts a dash of milk in gravy which somehow makes it a bit more unctuous. I don’t think we’re having turkey this year. We have three Guinea fowl in the freezer. Delia is fine for most things but her egg cookery is dire IMO.

Oh the wine is for drinking kitty not the gravy! 😉
