Feeling out of step?

Bless me GN I cannot tell a lie but speaking from a distinctly minority position it seems I must confess the following GN sins-
I like Joules (also Seasalt, White Stuff, Boden and Emma Bridgewater, but have gone off Hotter) and I take exception to my style choices bring disparaged as frumpy
I still consult Delia, Nigella and Jamie-also Katie Stewart
I would not have Bisto in my kitchen - there are excellent stocks in sachets in the supermarket, including turkey
I don’t care for turkey anyway , would rather have a couple of ribs of beef
I hate Tesco and never shop there either in person or on line so I was happy to snooze through the wee small hours, as well as the big ones
I won’t even give a thought to Christmas decs until 10 days before the Day, and that’s only because I am having the whole extended family here on the 18 th, otherwise that would be “decorating” weekend
So as I said, clearly in a minority of one but I take comfort in the Scottish saying “They’re a’ oot o’ step except puir wee Jock”

Who wants to follow the crowd. Not me.

Just do what makes you happy......as long as you don't scare the horses. 😉

Smileless2012 Tue 15-Nov-22 11:34:25

I agree DSL, you do you Maw; whatever makes you happysmile.

J52 Tue 15-Nov-22 11:37:56

You’re not alone Maw! I doubt we agree on everything, but I’m with you on most of that!
Must be the Scottish genes.😂

Nannagarra Tue 15-Nov-22 11:48:08

I could have written this word for word. As well as the writers you name I also consult Prue Leith and Mary Berry.

Namsnanny Tue 15-Nov-22 11:52:56

I'm still not sure where I fit, but I'm still heregrin

Lathyrus Tue 15-Nov-22 11:53:44

As long as you do exactly what Delia tells you, everything will be fine😬

I gave up on Tesco forever when they introduced that This price with your Clubcard, but extortionate without.

And I was sitting in my nice woolly Joules cardigan when the news broke☹️

I’m out of step because I like to be. Who wants to follow the herd ?

M0nica Tue 15-Nov-22 12:04:56

What is wrong with feeling, or being out of step? I have been out of step all my life and I have never wasted a second on being concerned about it.

I do understand being irritated by those who take the high moral tone and condemn other peoples taste. Is there any insult more potent than being told you look frumpy or your taste in shops is frumpy?

Lathyrus Tue 15-Nov-22 12:13:11

Can we have a discussion about what frumpy is?

Or shall I start a different thread about it?

Farzanah Tue 15-Nov-22 12:15:11

I would hate to fit in.
What I do find tricky as a grandparent is listening other doting gp’s. I love my family, but am not as embroiled in their lives as others seem to be. We have our own lives and interests and meet up every few months when we are all free.

henetha Tue 15-Nov-22 12:17:52

It's being different that makes the world interesting. Imagine if we were all just clones of each other.
I've always felt out of sync with everyone else anyway. We should all do/wear what we want as long as it doesn't hurt others.

No Christmas decorations here until a week before Christmas. I've never been interested in 'things'. Material things I mean - bigger houses, posher cars etc. I'm not competitive or ambitious in any way.
We get ribbed by family for loving Wetherspoons. Lunch and a large glass of wine for two people about £14. What's not to like?
I do love Bisto gravy granules though. Only since the lovely James Martin said his mum makes great gravy with them on the hob. He showed us how and it's great.

Maw I don’t think you’re at all frumpy and I’m grateful for you introducing me to the wonderful eBay Seasalt outlet!

Christmas decorations only come out on the Sunday before Christmas.

dragonfly46 Tue 15-Nov-22 12:42:14

I too agree with everything you do Maw except I am a great believer in Gravy granules. I love being able to make gravy with my boiler tap at the last minute after serving up the dinner and washing up the pans!

After all how are they different from Lazy garlic etc which btw I do not use!

Blossoming Tue 15-Nov-22 12:43:01

Oh Lathyrus please start that thread!

Blondiescot Tue 15-Nov-22 13:00:29

I'm been out of step all my life, so nothing new there! You do you, Maw!

kittylester Tue 15-Nov-22 13:06:06

I agree with most of what you say Maw though I had gone off Joules. I do use lazy garlic but not Bisto. I love the ritual of making gravy by deglazing the pan with wine and then gently reducing it with stock to the right consistency.

nexus63 Tue 15-Nov-22 13:18:51

i am very out of step, probably have been my whole life....i hate christmas, arguing with my son to go to his for christmas day, have not put a tree or decorations up for years, never use bisto as i very seldom have hot food, christmas dinner will be sandwiches and salad sitting in my pjs, i will not be doing a "christmas shop", will give christmas cards to neighbours who give me one and they will sit in a pile on the unit, please understand i am not an unhappy old scrooge, i just don't see the point in all the fuss.....so to all the gn....bah humbug..lol

Iam64 Tue 15-Nov-22 13:23:43

I’m happy to be ‘out of step’. I’m with you on likes maw. I’m sorry about Hotter and Ecco - limits my choices

Oreo Tue 15-Nov-22 13:39:11

Does it bother you MawTheMerrier ?
So what if more people don’t like Joules clothes than you thought, you likely as not don’t like the ones they do.
Make your mantra ‘I don’t care what other people think’ makes life a whole lot easier.

Oreo Tue 15-Nov-22 13:41:08

I love Christmas and will put the decs up on 1st Dec but understand other people have different views.

MawtheMerrier Tue 15-Nov-22 13:43:33

No, of course I’m not bovvered!
(If I was I’d duck down and keep quiet.)
Just pleased that others have felt able to agree and disagree on choices, sometimes a thread can be too much a case of everybody appearing to be on the same bandwagonsmile

Sarah74 Tue 15-Nov-22 13:44:39

I think it would be a bit weird if there was a big majority on GN who liked a particular clothing brand or type of food or whatever. There seems to be a fairly wide age range on GN (? 45-90) with people from different countries, different backgrounds, different ideas.

mrshat Tue 15-Nov-22 13:48:48

I'm with you Maw on most of your opinions! I do still like HOTTER! Comfort is all. Christmas decs I can leave unless I am hosting! Live and let live, I say! Just enjoy yourself your way.
