A relative with 3 children has just received email with details of recent school photos. If she had one of each child then the 3 together the cost for 1 copy would be £70.Then within weeks they will be selling class photos. Why in this day and age are they so expensive I am sure £5 a photo x whole school and they would still make their profits.
News headlines of poverty, cost of living crisis etc how can parents pay these exorbitant costs ,as well-being as emotional upset of not being able to recall your child's school history. In this day of mobile phone photos children are snapped daily so why the unnecessary expense.I also hope that parents not on benefits are not being charged to compensate for those that are as with school trips and outings as most of those not on benefits are truely struggling keeping their financial heads above water.

Nearly as bad as the wrong school reports!

I know, he was actually quite upset because he thought they had completely lost his photo!

CHRIS8888 Nothing should be printed that isn't ordered that cuts down waste ,thats because downloads are available a lot of .Photographers dont print on spec anymore ,it was very expensive to do as professional printing has always been more expensive than a high street lab

Professional photographers do cock up though, it was probably those in the skip. My son had professional photos taken at his graduation, but the photos that arrived weren’t him. It took ages, but eventually we sorted it out and received the correct ones - I presume the incorrect ones were disposed of?

There is no obligation whatsoever for parents to buy school photos.

Indeed.

Truly no need for photo packets stuffed in store containers.

Going to the local tip a few years ago we saw boxes of school photos just dumped in a skip.
Makes you a bit scared about what happens now to the ones not bought.

I haven’t any of my primary school group photos, and they’re the ones I’d like to see. Two of my schools were in small villages and only had 30 or so pupils in all - perhaps they weren’t worth the photographer’s while.

I’m about to update the DGS photos we have on display, and asked about the school ones. One school’s charging £20 for an 8 x 6, but at least it has two of them on. Another’s charging £15, but the boys were taken separately - parents had to take them in for a special Saturday session if they wanted a family photo. And the nursery ones weren’t up to much, apparently. It’s not going well!

There's one of me with classmates on the internet 😲
We must have had a photographer come into school to take informal photos.
No, I'm not uploading it 😀

I found one JackyB. I'm in this section. Approximately 1965 in London.

The wrong report would have been a blessing in our house when DD2 was 14!

It would have been a blessing in our house for me - when I was about 12. 😱

I don't know who got DD's!
They probably had a shock too 😁

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Nov-22 10:11:15

Me too, paddyann. It's a tough time.
I've just realised a local photographer has closed down his business.

No PR work no commercial Callistemon and I hear from friends still in the industry that a lot of those jobs have gone for good .Its hard graft for others to get weddings as prices have been cut to the bone just to get any work through the door.
I'm very glad we were at the end stage of our career ,I'm so sorry for the young ones just starting out

Re class photos, I found some of my senior school ones when clearing my mother’s house. Certainly didn’t want to keep the one with the vile little bully sitting in the front row - with that poisonous look on her face perfectly caught on camera.
It felt good to bin her!

The report we received was terrible!
I thought, even DD isn't that bad, surely 😲

The problem was we knew the other girl whose report it was.

Accessing the school file with all the reprobates' mugshots is also useful when writing reports, so you don't write about the wrong child!

We got the wrong school report once for a DD!

Does anyone still have their own old school photos? Maybe we could post some - I like having a giggle over myself with front teeth missing and a skew wiff ribbon in unruly hair

A group I belong to suggested we each take a photo of us taken in 1952 to see who could be identified.
A few did say "I wasn't born then" but most of us were.

Some people hadn't changed much at all and were instantly recognisable, others had to tell us which was their photo.
Someone said to me "There's no mistaking you!"

Really? Bunches, wonky teeth and a big grin.
🤔

I can imagine the comments about someone "who claims to be poor" but can afford to spend £70 on unnecessary photos.

Callistemon21 Fri 18-Nov-22 15:38:24

Photographers need to make a living too

👏👏👏

Weddings cancelled, no school photos, no graduation photos, no family shoots during Covid.
No work.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 18-Nov-22 15:28:18

It's often the school photo which is used if a child goes missing, as Doodledog says. I remember a relation who had just started a primary teaching career feeling a bit upset when for the first time she had to put the children's names on the back of their photos and give those copies to the school office just in case.

I'm off out shopping now but if no one has started such a thread when I get back, I'll see if I can find one and will post one of my photos. Shouldn't be a problem - after all, many of us have posted our wedding pics.
