Being a good methodist girl I always called my dolls Sheba. One was rubber and all her limbs perished and gradually fell off. I told people she had leprosy that chapel teaching again.
They didn't like the fact that Philips sisters were married to German Nazis so they gave him the title to bring him into the fold. Also calling him Mountbatten instead of Battenberg like Lord Louis his uncle had done before him.

And I don’t think Philip ever lost his Prince title. He was always Prince Philip, the DofE.

If the Queen spoke about him, she always referred to him as ‘Prince Philip’.

Regarding the carrying-on of the titles after the Duke dies, e.g. the Duke of Kent, I think the son can use the title, but loses the ‘HRH’ before it. The ‘HRH’ is only for the children or grandchildren of the monarch.

(I find all this royal stuff very interesting, I realise many on GN don’t).

This hasn't been confirmed yet, I think. I'm hoping it's not true as it's ridiculous. I'm sure I read years ago that the title of Duke of Edinburgh would go to Edward one day.
Nothing against Charlotte, she's lovely, but far too young to have another title.

To imply that people get invested in things that have no impact on their lives but are designed to rehabilitate people's reputations or build on the ones they think they have earned and deserve. You can be King of the Jungle, Duchess of Duke Street or King of the UK, doesn't make you a person worthy of admiration. It's your character and achievements that make you so.

Maybe they are trying to keep the titles to the main family line. I'm asking because I don't know, if it had been given to Edward would it have been passed down to his son?
I always thought it was a made-up title by George the 6th so that his daughter was not married to Prince Philip of Greece, bringing Philip into the family line. Had there been a Duke of Edinburgh before Prince Philip?

For what it’s worth if the King wants his GD to be known as the Duchess of Edinburgh it’s ok with me as it does not effect my life in any way.

I don't wish to detract attention from nanna8, who has hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned.

But what in the name of sanity is all this about? Man who derives his power from who his mum was, may or may not have decided to give his granddaughter a made up title that some people think should have go to his brother, who actually only has a less prestigious made up title at the moment.

I don’t get the impression that Edward is a title chaser, he didn’t want them for his children, he seems happy to be in the background and quite possibly agrees with Charles that the title should go to Charlotte rather than him.

Ive always wondered why Edward was only an Earl. For sure he made a bit of a tosser of himself with "Its a Royal Knockout". and ducking out of the marines. However that was a long time ago and in the meantime he and Sophie have lived a blameless life (in comparison with some other royals that we wont mention) and just got on with it.

biglouis I quote agree with you about Edward’s contribution to the Royal Family, but it is a bit harsh to say he ‘ducked out’ of the RMs. Only 50% of recruits get through the first part of the training, I admire him for trying. Those who qualify are the real elite.

Why ,just Why...in a country where millions of kids are on the poverty line,where they wont eat more than one meal a day the "King" ....the fool ...had decided a another title is the best thing for his GD!

It should go to Edward, if that was what the Queen and DofE wanted. I know it was said at the time of the Wessex’s marriage that in due course, i.e. after the death of both parents, the title would go to him and Sophie. Otherwise, surely the Queen would have made him Duke of Somewhere Else, lots to choose from.

The title Princess Royal is for the eldest daughter of the monarch. So Charlotte does not fit that criteria. Not sure quite when the Queen made Anne P.R, but certainly she was quite grown up.

And frankly, at 7 years old, being a plain ‘Princess’ is more than enough for any little girl, IMHO. So if Charles is thinking of extra titles for the future, plenty of time for that in years to come.

Why does a 7 yr old need a duchy? Since Edwardian times, usually children of the monarch or the first in line are given such titles on marriage. I think Victoria gave children titles though.
