JK Rowling putting her money where her mouth is
(374 Posts)She's opened and is fully funding a place for female victims of sexual violence. It's called Beira's place (Beira is Scottish goddess of the darkness ie winter). They'll provide whatever support and help that these women actually need. JK's great!
Well done to JK.👍
Good for JK - fighting for women
Can I add my support for J K Rowling. It sounds like Briera's Place is fulfilling a real need.

Could people get things right. This is not a women's refuge. It is a place which will offer counselling and support. It is not somewhere abused women can go to stay. If they need to refer a woman to a safe space it will still be to the oversubscribed and underfunded refuges.
Correct. Most women though will not need a refuge, they will need group and individual counselling sessions and support. Some women don't feel safe or comfortable being with or around males at these sessions, and JKR is ensuring there is ONE space that will facilitate these women. Those that aren't bothered, the majority according to you, can use the numerous other provisions that don't specify female only. I really don't see why that's a problem to anyone. There is no public money being provided, so it's nothing to do with anybody but the people providing or receiving the services.
I don't think I said anything which prompts that reply Rosie51 there are a number of posts on this thread referring to a refuge. It isn't a refuge.

Couldn’t agree more. So few wealthy folk willing to follow in her footsteps. Oh they might make donations but to completely fund such a much needed service is admirable. A true humanitarian.

I'm surprised you can't seem to appreciate the difference, MaryXYX, between a transwoman who has had hormones and surgery and lived as a woman throughout that gruelling process, and an intact man who for some reason wants to be in a woman-only space. I think that most of us would probably be quite happy with sharing spaces with the first, if only because it might be very difficult to tell she was a transwoman rather than a woman born in a female body. She would not want to draw attention to herself, I would imagine. There would be no threat of a penis being used in anger from that kind of transwoman.
The kind most of us do not want to share single-sex spaces with is the second, whose motives are distictly questionable.
Exactly my point of view, WIWYA.
The differences are in the commitment, and that someone without a penis who is taking female hormones is unlikely to pose a threat to women - they are at least trying to be as women are. Bearded self-identifiers, on the other hand, have shown no commitment to becoming a woman, and the system is open to abuse. There is a subset of transpeople/allies who appear to resent women having anything for ourselves - whether that is safe spaces, sports teams, shortlists, language to describe ourselves, and this is more of the same. We can't have counsellors who specialise in dealing with women who have been raped or sexually assaulted. We are now (according to the more misogynistic end of the trans agenda) not supposed to even have the crime of rape restricted to penetration with a penis, as that would make it clear that the perpetrator is male!
'Peeps' (whatever they are) can keep repeating that TWAW till the cows come home, but saying it won't make it so. They are transwomen.
Good post Rosie
What a positive and good thing JK Rowling has done.
I am horrifed at the abuse that she has suffered from the shrieking mob; it seemingly has to be their view prevailing, or total destruction wreaked on anyone who doesn't agree. Terrifying people, permeating so many areas of life now. Universities cringing away from having speakers with 'unacceptable' views - whatever happened to debate? What has happened to tolerance? Good for JKR - long may she flourish.
Thanks for your reply Glorianny to my query.
JKR I salute you.

I live in Edinburgh where she resides and I did not know this. Well done to her - she is indeed an amazing women. She would be a great First Minister.
Fantastic news and an inspiration.
A really wonderful thing to do! Action and not just words.
Trans women may be ‘women’ in a trans sense but they are not, and never can be, female. Women need female-only spaces for their own safety, dignity and privacy. To pretend otherwise is an act of self-delusion and offers no help, support or allegiance to either women or trans women.
MaryXYX
The whole point of JKR's venture is that it is NOT for women - it's for some women. She wants to exclude trans-women, although how would they know? Possibly the next development would be to exclude non-whites.
Transwomen will be able to use the other facilities in Edinburgh, but women who only want to be with and counselled by other females will now have one place they can turn to. Why would anyone object to these traumatised women having a safe space, what promotes the desire to deny them this?
And that's a vile accusation to make about racism being the next development. I hope you're not in alignment with, amongst others, transwoman India Willoughby who regularly tweets that if black women count as women then so should transwomen. Black women, white women, short women, fat women, old women, skinny women, disabled women are all women because they share a female sex. Transwomen are male sex otherwise they wouldn't be trans would they?
Will you equally condemn the home I referred to that is exclusively for transgender people, or is that permissible in your world?

It isn't a claim Mary it's a biological fact that a man cannot change sex and become a woman.
If there's any doubt, check the chromosomes (yes, I know this is not a check most of us can make!): if a person has at least 1 "Y" chromosome, that person was born a man. Women have no "Y". Until there's a way to replace that "Y" with an "X", that person cannot be truly called a "woman".

"Peeps here think they know everything there is to know about human biology"
Fact Transwomen are not women. After being raped I want to be in a female only space. Not one including Men with a penis pretending to be a woman.
I have no problem with men dressing as a woman as long as it is in an honest way.
Not in a lets delude ourselves and pretend biology is mallable way.
We all know it can't be done. No male can even have a menstral cycle or get pregnant. It is just not possible.
Self delusion is dodg but far worse to insit that others agree with you.
TW are TW and not women.

Let's be clear about what is proposed. There is a legal process and the gender change is for life. It is not a license to change gender on a whim. 🤣🤣🤣
The bill would lower the age people can legally change gender from 18 to 16, would not require a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, would reduce the waiting time from two years to six months, and would require applicants to make a statutory declaration that they wished to remain in their acquired gender for life
And those suffering genuine dysphoria would undoubtedly stick to that.
But since males who want to take female spaces, female jobs, female medals, etc. are already lying by saying they are female, would one more lie bother them?
I have yet to come across any biologist who claims that a man can become a woman.

Well done to JKR. Self-funding this is a mammoth task and investment. I've had many clients who have been living or have lived in women's refuges and know for certain that this provision is needed but not available in the volume required, and that there do still remain many issues surrounding transwomen being in the same space as sis women who have been abused by men. I know the arguments here and fully support the rights of transwomen whilst at the same time accepting that women in refuges are processing their own traumas and have little emotional energy left to contemplate the transwomen trauma too. We need to be accepting of the general situation that violence against women - all women - has to be acknowledged and provision made for their healing, away from men.
Mary
Peeps here think they know everything there is to know about human biology
Most biologists would tell you they don't yet.
The medical community treats gender dysphoria physically not mentally... but that's not enough
Trans women are women
You can waste incredible amounts of time going around in the same circle with the same people here and be warned... they get personal
