She's opened and is fully funding a place for female victims of sexual violence. It's called Beira's place (Beira is Scottish goddess of the darkness ie winter). They'll provide whatever support and help that these women actually need. JK's great!

Good for her - and very good indeed for all those females who need a safe placeπŸ‘

Her commitment to women, and especially those who have been victims of sexual violence, is so heartening. Well done JKR!

She's amazing isn't she.

Blossoming Mon 12-Dec-22 10:12:23

What a marvellous thing to do,

pascal30 Mon 12-Dec-22 10:15:07

After all the dreadful abuse she has suffered online she still has the goodness of heart to do this.. she's a wonderful writer and clearly a special person as well...

Absolutely great, and sadly much needed.

There is already a rape crisis centre in Edinburgh but it's led by a transwoman and they include gender 're education' for women recovering from sexual assault and rape. Hence the rather pointed nature of JK's new service. I wonder what will happen to the other service?

Hopefully it will continue providing for those who need it, and being funded. We have a new one in Brighton. There is clearly a need for both types of centres ..

Smileless2012 Mon 12-Dec-22 10:52:45

Can there ever be too many? Not everyone would necessarily feel comfortable with a rape crisis centre led by a trans woman so it's good that there's one for those who wouldn't.

Callistemon21 Mon 12-Dec-22 11:00:10

Well done Joanne Rowling

It's dreadful that there is a continuing need for centres like these but obviously there is room for a further one.
There must be a need, too, for more re-education of those who perpetrate this violence on women and girls.

Good news, thank you. J.K.R.

Wondering if the authorities will try to close it as it does conform.

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 11:40:37

They won't or shouldn't be able to close it down, that's why she is funding it all herself and not going for charity status. Those who vilify and abuse her won't have any basis for their vindictiveness.

mokryna Mon 12-Dec-22 11:54:12

Thank you I pleased to hear that Rosie51

Aveline Mon 12-Dec-22 12:55:56

Yes. How about some 're education' for men not necessarily on gender stuff but just not inflicting violence including sexual violence on women.

Glorianny Mon 12-Dec-22 13:17:26

I don't see why anyone would try to close it down. It is another service in an area which has been sadly under funded like so much else under a Tory government. It's JKR's money and she's putting it to good use. I'm not happy that we seem to be heading back to Victorian times when individual philanthropists had to support services but that's another subject.

Well Mermaids have done their best to get charity status withdrawn from the LGB alliance, which would effectively shut it down. Were you unaware? That is exactly why J K Rowling has decided to fund this exclusively herself, so as to avoid similar treatment.
