I had a Sainsbury’s delivery this morning. There were 2 bottles of wine in one of the crates. I told the driver that I hadn’t ordered them and he checked for me. He then said that I should keep them anyway as it was a mistake by the company. I told him that I wouldn’t do this and said he could have them. He said he wouldn’t be allowed to do that and told me again to take them saying that that’s what others would do. I told him that would be dishonest. He wasn’t happy with me presumably because he was going to have to deal with the bottles when he got back to his depot. Later I checked and found that they cost £13 each but reduced to £10 so I’ve missed out on some good wine to have with my turkey!

My daughter did this job in Asda for 5 years and when people refused stuff, she was then back at the wear house for hours before she could go home filling in all the admin forms and someone would always get told off. It is best to just to say "oh thank you so much " and take it. I get that you were being honest but he had asked you to take it and showed you that he wasn’t happy that you didn’t, what more did you need?

Drivers may not take gifts and they have cameras in their van to that are checked every night to check they take nothing. So the diver could not have kept it and the best thing you can do is make it as simple as possible for them. You didn’t miss out you turned it down big difference.

My first delivery during Brest from Iceland included some extra things which I hadnt ordered. I rang Iceland to let them know, expecting them to pick these up but they told me to keep the items. No wine sadly.

As I don’t eat pre made frozen meals I took it along to an elderly neighbour who lived alone and had been unwell. I knew he couldn’t get out to shop and thought the ‘straight into the microwave ‘ or oven would make things easy for him.

I heard later that he died at home a week or so afterwards and hope it’s nothing to do with the food. RIP Richard.

It's my understanding that if you receive goods you haven't ordered, these are 'unsolicited goods' and if the sender doesn't collect them within a reasonable time, that you are entitled to keep them.
However as apart from a small duplicate item I received through an on-line purchase (the told to keep) this has never happened to me so I've not been able to test the theory!

Don't you just luuuurve barrack room lawyers and amateur cops!?😅 Theft is theft. Wrapped up in "ooh I didn't order this" or" oops I forgot to return these and haven't paid for them" if you wish, but to not even attempt to inform of stuff received unordered is, well , theft! Same as not returning excess change.
As soon as you fail to inform, you're being dishonest.and yes there's "theft by finding" too! Not "finders Keepers losers weepers" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that's for the playground!

Blimey this happens often with my Waitrose delivery they always tell you to keep items and everyone I know always does including me.

Nannashirlz Fri 16-Dec-22 11:30:17

I’ve had it few times items not ordered and rang customer service and being told to keep them. Nowadays if it happens I say nothing and just oh well they lose not mine lol

I’d have followed the delivery driver’s advice and kept the wine. I don’t think food banks accept alcohol so the idea of offering it as a raffle prize is a good one. Or give it to a family member or friend.

Amazon do similar sometimes. I ordered a £10 item recently and they sent the wrong thing. They told me to keep it, refunded my money including postage the next day.

I’d have kept them as he was quite insistent.

Callistemon21 Wed 14-Dec-22 20:52:09

I would have kept them because it causes more trouble to try to return them.

We were sent a box of coffee pods and don't have a coffee machine. The driver said they would go in the skip if I refused them so I gave them to a friend.

Do food banks accept alcohol?

No, they don't.

Rosie51 Wed 14-Dec-22 20:29:32

Any food that is refused by the householder, even sealed packets, jars, tins has to be destroyed, it is a 'chain of custody' issue. I'm not sure about wine but it could well be the same.

Redrobin51 Wed 14-Dec-22 20:22:30

I had this and noticed before driver had gone 6 bottles of £10 wine and two big boxes of chocolates. I had been brought up to be scrupulously honest so handed it back, the driver said he woukd have kept them. Didnt want the driver accused of anything if someine ewng sqying they hadnt received the items. During lockdown when they were leaving it at the top of the drive there was a bag of food which wasn't ours. I rang up and they told me to keep it. It was packed full of items that you would buy if you had small children so I took it around to a young family who had recently moved near us. Had a lovely little note from the eldest child and they now make my day by waving everytime they go past.x

We once had 12 bottles of the same wine delivered by Ocado instead of 2. I owned up, half hoping I’d be told to keep them, but no such luck.grin

I rather hope the driver kept them - they do a great job and this was in lockdown when they kept us afloat.

Fernbergien Wed 14-Dec-22 19:20:38

I think all supermarkets have the same policy. Cannot be returned. Cheapest and easiest option is to keep them if offered. Easier for all as extra cost to return them.

nadateturbe Wed 14-Dec-22 17:57:12

Sainsbury! 🙄

nadateturbe Wed 14-Dec-22 17:56:41

Difficult one aonk. I'm very honest, but in this case I might have kept them, and sent an email to inform Tesco.

Sara1954 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:56:13

My husband couldn’t believe his luck when we seemed to have an extra sag completely full of bars of chocolate, I emailed them and they told me to keep it

Theexwife Wed 14-Dec-22 17:44:48

When food and drink have left the store it cannot be returned for resale, the driver cannot keep it so would have to be destroyed. Nobody was being dishonest, it was a mistake.

Joseanne Wed 14-Dec-22 17:40:47

Kept them. It's normal if they deliver something by mistake.

Kate1949 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:37:44

Tesco do this. I had about £15 worth of extra groceries in one delivery. The driver told me to keep them as he wasn't allowed to take them back.

MarilynneT33 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:33:07

My Sainsbury's delivery drivers would have said the same to me. They are good though because last week a bottle of Comfort fab.cond. had leaked into the basket and a third of it was all over. I helped him clean the basket out and he knocked the price of it off.

Blondiescot Wed 14-Dec-22 17:28:06

I don't drink alcohol myself, but I'd have kept them! I'm sure my DH would have disposed of them!
I don't think foodbanks accept alcohol - the ones around here don't, anyway.

luluaugust Wed 14-Dec-22 17:21:10

I probably wouldn't have realised until the delivery man was long gone. I wonder what my teetotal, long gone GM would have done if two bottles of wine had come anywhere near her!

crazyH Wed 14-Dec-22 17:05:24

I would have kept it. Their fault, not mine 😂
