What would you have done?

I had a Sainsbury’s delivery this morning. There were 2 bottles of wine in one of the crates. I told the driver that I hadn’t ordered them and he checked for me. He then said that I should keep them anyway as it was a mistake by the company. I told him that I wouldn’t do this and said he could have them. He said he wouldn’t be allowed to do that and told me again to take them saying that that’s what others would do. I told him that would be dishonest. He wasn’t happy with me presumably because he was going to have to deal with the bottles when he got back to his depot. Later I checked and found that they cost £13 each but reduced to £10 so I’ve missed out on some good wine to have with my turkey!

If the delivery person told me to keep them and there would be no charge for them then I would have done so.
I had similar a few weeks back only it was a lot more than two bottles of wine. I did a quick count, it was over £60 worth of mixed goods. I was told the same as you, it was Tesco’s mistake (apparently there were quite a few that day) and it was easier/cheaper for them to send the deliveries out as they were, rather than have staff spend a long time sorting it out.
I kept some of it, my daughter took some, rest went to Food Bank.

I admire your honesty but the delivery guy was right in my view and just as honest as you !
This has happened to me before, I accept the goods and simply mail the company to explain. Eventually someone replies and (paraphrasing ) was told" please accept as a goodwill gesture ".

Well you can’t say you ve missed out if you caused the missing out ?.?
I m afraid if I d been told to take them I would have Tesco and other supermarkets waste so much and are not poverty stricken 😂 I d do as I was told

I’d have kept it from a big supermarket, not in days gone by from a local corner shop though.

Forsythia Wed 14-Dec-22 15:51:44

I’d have kept it and donated it to a food bank.

Do food banks accept alcohol?

I had a couple of things that I didn't order, and noticed them straight away. The Ocado driver told me to keep them as for whatever reason they had been put in my order. I wasn't charged for them.

I emailed to say I had them and if they were local to me I would deliver to whoever may have been expecting the items!

The reply was to just keep them, which I did.

I would have kept them and donated to a local charity raffle - there's always something happening this time of year. Your honesty is commendable but I can also relate to the delivery driver too; if ever we were offered tips like that where I worked we had to submit them to head office under 'charitable' donations protocol - we weren't even supposed to accept the price of a cuppa.

I ordered something online after several weeks it hadn't arrived so I notified the company. They sent out a replacement which arrived quickly.
Some time later the original item arrived. I notified the company. They told me to keep the second item.

Do food banks accept alcohol?

I don’t know. I usually donate through my local Tesco collection point. If not, a PTA raffle prize in a summer Fayre would work.

I wish my Tesco mistake had been wine. I had dog food delivered and I haven't got a dog. I too tried to return it and couldn't so my neighbour's dog had extra supplies.

MerylStreep Wed 14-Dec-22 16:56:29

I don’t see the problem 💁‍♀️

crazyH Wed 14-Dec-22 17:05:24

I would have kept it. Their fault, not mine 😂

luluaugust Wed 14-Dec-22 17:21:10

I probably wouldn't have realised until the delivery man was long gone. I wonder what my teetotal, long gone GM would have done if two bottles of wine had come anywhere near her!

Blondiescot Wed 14-Dec-22 17:28:06

I don't drink alcohol myself, but I'd have kept them! I'm sure my DH would have disposed of them!
I don't think foodbanks accept alcohol - the ones around here don't, anyway.

My Sainsbury's delivery drivers would have said the same to me. They are good though because last week a bottle of Comfort fab.cond. had leaked into the basket and a third of it was all over. I helped him clean the basket out and he knocked the price of it off.

Kate1949 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:37:44

Tesco do this. I had about £15 worth of extra groceries in one delivery. The driver told me to keep them as he wasn't allowed to take them back.

Joseanne Wed 14-Dec-22 17:40:47

Kept them. It's normal if they deliver something by mistake.

Theexwife Wed 14-Dec-22 17:44:48

When food and drink have left the store it cannot be returned for resale, the driver cannot keep it so would have to be destroyed. Nobody was being dishonest, it was a mistake.

Sara1954 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:56:13

My husband couldn’t believe his luck when we seemed to have an extra sag completely full of bars of chocolate, I emailed them and they told me to keep it

nadateturbe Wed 14-Dec-22 17:56:41

Difficult one aonk. I'm very honest, but in this case I might have kept them, and sent an email to inform Tesco.

nadateturbe Wed 14-Dec-22 17:57:12

Sainsbury! 🙄

Fernbergien Wed 14-Dec-22 19:20:38

I think all supermarkets have the same policy. Cannot be returned. Cheapest and easiest option is to keep them if offered. Easier for all as extra cost to return them.

Maggiemaybe Wed 14-Dec-22 20:09:22

We once had 12 bottles of the same wine delivered by Ocado instead of 2. I owned up, half hoping I’d be told to keep them, but no such luck.grin

I rather hope the driver kept them - they do a great job and this was in lockdown when they kept us afloat.
