Scary, what if someone with a heart condition ate some

It's getting worse

I love spinach! Should I cross it off my shopping list? I don't think it is funny. Poor spinach, labelled toxic.

I'm not sure why there's suddenly a toxic spinach harvest in Australia.

Was there another hallucinogenic plant growing in between the rows of spinach?
Did someone mix LSD into the fertiliser or spike the irrigation system?

If you find out, nanna8, can you let us know.

Spinach , of all foods, has such a benignly wholesome reputation that it's ironic that it caused such an unreasoning event as hallucination.

Admittedly, concern was not expressed.

Baggs Sat 17-Dec-22 11:32:23

I agree, farnorth, but at the same time I can also understand why someone – perhaps in a MontyPythonesque mood – might find it funny while also feeling concern for the ill people.

FarNorth Sat 17-Dec-22 11:16:27

'Toxic spinach ' might be funny in a Monty Python sketch.
At the head of an article about people getting ill, it's really not funny.

Baggs Sat 17-Dec-22 11:08:37

I expect that the idea of "toxic spinach" is what amused the OP. It is rather a weird concept. Spinach does not have an 'image' of being nasty in any way at all.

There are different kinds of 'funny'. Total weirdness is one of them. I think the interpretations of a lot of subsequent posters were altogether too literal. Plus, people like finding fault.

We had to throw our spinach out because they are now being recalled from all the supermarkets, not just Costco. I don’t think it is funny at all, people are getting very sick. I suppose some people laugh at others’ misfortunes though.

What is the medical care for hallucinations?

It's quite an interesting phenomenon, this toxic spinach, especially as no-one seems to know what has caused it and why only Sydney Costco was affected. I'm wondering if some fungus in the growing medium has caused it, or if it was contaminated deliberately after harvesting.

Whatever the cause, there should be an investigation by toxicologists.

Baggs it could be last year that some home-grown courgettes were found to be toxic and I'm sure caused a lot problems with those who ate them.
We had some seeds left from last year and DH planted them. The courgettes from one plant tasted bitter, we didn't eat them.

To fall off a chair laughing is a figure of speech and not to be taken literally.

HeavenLeigh Sat 17-Dec-22 10:29:50

No! Another one that doesn’t find it remotely funny, and I can honestly say I’ve never fell off a chair laughing at anything! And I have a great sense of humour

I’ve started a thread about hallucinations, if anyone is interested.

CountessFosco, I think that its one for you to avoid.
You could do yourself a mischief

I think it’s a delayed April Fool.

1summer Sat 17-Dec-22 10:11:13

Why is this funny?

Callistemon21 Sat 17-Dec-22 10:06:19

Caleo

Has anyone ever experienced pleasant hallucinations?

Oh, I expect so.

I did show a visiting Australian and she asked if a rogue worker had laced the spinach with LSD!

HowVeryDareYou Sat 17-Dec-22 08:58:20

How strange to find it funny.....

I've neer found anything so funny that I fell off a chair (or rolled around on the floor)

Hetty58 Sat 17-Dec-22 07:53:08

Just sad! Is there a prize for the 'Best post to go down like a lead balloon'?

FannyCornforth Sat 17-Dec-22 04:52:41

What a bizarre reaction.
This is one of the oddest threads that I’ve ever seen on here…

Can’t see any humour in that CountessFossco.
