Old fashioned things you still do

We have ‘brown’ furniture. My sons think it is very old fashioned, though they aren’t rude about it.
My dgd thinks it is Elizabethan.
It’s a Victorian house, so I suppose it goes.

Hi @Nanagem, I must agree about the blinds being better than nets, it would save having to take them down every couple of weeks to wash. JMO

I make marmalade which, apparently, is mainly eaten by old people!! Never buy it in a shop.
Also scrape bowls and pans clean... I notice younger people don't bother so much.
I also wear a pinny for dirty jobs.
I sometimes polish furniture.. love the smell.
Never iron towels or sheets etc but I love wearing linen and iron it even though I know its going to crush as soon as I put it on. It is a labour of love. I don't like man made fibres so I iron a lot of clothes.
I keep the cooking water from vegetables and use it to make soup. A lot of the goodness is in the cooking water.
I cook everything from scratch.. only tins used are tomatoes and tuna. Never buy ready meals.

We use pastry forks for cakes, fish knives and forks every week, cloth napkins and tablecloths when we have guests. We have a gravy boat, fish slice, cake slice, soup spoons and dessert spoons. We are big foodies and love to have cutlery etc for all occasions. I use hankies regularly, which are always ironed we have tea bags but have china mugs for tea, but not fussy about mugs/cups for coffee. If that makes me old fashioned so be it I think of ot more as having good taste.

I iron most things, as I like cotton and have sensitive skin. always keep mens cotton handkerchief as bigger of course and as above useful in many ways. Bubble and squeak to me is made from left overs and yorkshire puddings are always made from scratch. Try to always have washing up done and bed made before I go out, but that is because I am usually very weary when I get home and need to get a coffee in a clean cup asap. Listen to the radio usually on 3 or 4 but do not use alexa or whatever just put it on myself!

I use loose tea (can't get my favourite in bags)
iron hankies but not tea towels, don't like tissues
have a table napkin (DH doesn't bother)
iron pillow cases but not sheet or duvet cover
DH wears an apron when cooking tea

Still cut and wash my hair. Haven’t been to hairdresser for over sixty years.

I sent out the table napkins after Xmas as family were too used to crumpling them up as if in a restaurant. There were 36!
Normally iron tea towels and pillow cases and napkins and DH white handkerchiefs. I use a tea pot . My apron is wipe clean. We eat at a table but no table cloth. Always use a tea pot. I have a mug tree and we both have a bath,hate showers. Have been known to darn socks as people leave you in peace and quiet to avoid such madness in case it’s catching. I write thank you letters,and condolence letters( such a lot these days of the latter)I use glycerin in royal icing though the bottle is well out of date- as long as the daughters don’t see.

I still do my own cooking, bread (make the dough in breadmaker). Have to use frozen veg now. Never had or will have ready meals.

Well my younger children iron far more than me! They iron stuff I think is mad i.e. towels!!!

Not sure ironing is old fashioned - I iron everything. Can't imagine going out in un-ironed clothes.

I still use cotton hankies as I hate the smell and feel of tissues and I iron them and table napkins, some blouses and shirts and tray covers and tea towels.

I also write thank you letters when occasion demands.

I polish the hall floor after washing it - it stays nicer longer that way.

As far as housework and cooking goes, the list of old-fashioned things I do would bore you stiff, it is so long.

I love ironing handkerchiefs, I find it very satisfying in these trying times.

I iron less than I used to but I do iron tea towels (in case anybody needs something clean to put on a wound/burn); pillowcases but not sheets (fitted) or duvet covers (under handmade quilts); tops that are worn under things. I fill a basin with hot water for things that don’t go in the dishwasher (rather than washing everything under the hot tap!) and rinse them afterwards. I polish my “brown” furniture. Definitely thinking of going back to a pinny as I’m fed up splashing myself!!

When I read your post Grammaretto mentioning glycerin I remembered having it my cupboard years ago but couldn't remember what I had used it for! Thank goodness for Google - needed it for royal icing for the Christmas cakes. I used to make at least four traditional cakes - fruit soaked in brandy and cakes fed with brandy, homemade marzipan and then decorated with royal icing. I loved doing them but no way could I cope with doing even one now although I do cook and bake mostly to recipes in my head so they vary from time to time!!

During lockdown I had a book published about growing up in the 1950s. I called it 'Bottle Green Knickers With Pockets' Those were our gym knickers at grammar school and my mother always gave my sister and myself a freshly ironed hankie from a pile on the side board to place in the little pocket!!! I have always ironed hankies but I must admit that tissues seem to have taken over!!!

The only two of the things I do, written about on here is cook, bake from scratch and use a tablecloth.

I have a permanent plastic tablecloth on my table as I have the grandchildren weekly and it's easier to leave it on

we still put wood, silver and a bottle out on new yrs eve familly think we mad, not Scottish but mil was.

I do a hot wash once a week (90degrees). I also Iron pillowcases and tea towels. I also use tablecloths

I use a teapot much to my younger relatives amusement! Also wear an apron, use cotton hankies, use shoe polish, use proper cotton tablecloths and napkins!

I polished my silver for Christmas.

Baby talc works just as well, I was able to get a months old stain from one of my son's posh polo shirts with it.

I have indoor clothes for indoors and going for walks and other clothes for going out. Feel uncomfortable sitting about and cooking in good clothes.

Wear a petticoat. Polish my shoes plus have them heeled/soled when needed.

I still like using cash. That's considered very old fashioned these days!
