Susan56

I iron everything apart from duvet covers which DH irons.DH uses cotton hankies. We use a tablecloth and peel all veg and make proper gravy. We have a dinner service and cutlery which only comes out on high days and holidays.I think we must be very old fashioned too.

DGD didn’t know what an iron was.She used to call it the flattening tool!I iron the children's clothes when we look after them at their house but draw the line at ironing DD’s and SIL’s.
DH always wonders how they look so neat when they don’t iron anything.

Susan56, that reminded me. We once stayed with a sister of mine in the US in order to look after her young dd while her husband was seriously ill in hospital. As we left, elder sister arrived to take over.
Elder sister later told me that after doing the washing she’d looked absolutely everywhere - turned the house upside down - looking for an iron.

When she asked younger sister where on earth it was, the reply was, ‘I haven’t got one!’
She literally never irons anything. My dd1 is much the same. SiL does iron his work shirts though!

Fleurpepper where do you find Fuller's Earth and what is it?
I have an oily stain on my new Seasalt tunic top, right in the middle front!

I do most of the above.

And kitty, I use hair oil about once a month- Argan Oil- put it on early evening and it is mostly absorbed by the time I go to bed- and change pillow case the next day. Makes your hair lovely and soft.

For stains on sweatshirts, jumpers, etc, that can't be put in hot wash, I use Fuller's Earth- sprinkle some on, leave overnight, and it just soaks the fat stain out perfectly- brush off and put in wash - perfect. My go to product all the time- cheap and ecological.

I polish furniture because I enjoy doing it.
I carry a fabric handkerchief but mainly use tissues
I never use paper table napkins, I even have fabric ones for picnics
I only wear an apron for really dirty jobs

(Just in the middle of an animated discussion as to why I always say a round of toast when the bread is clearly not round!

I must be an old-fashioned gal at heart, not the hipster I strive to be grin

I iron my clothes and tea towels - bed linen is usually sent to the ironing service.

NO hankies!

Grammaretto Wed 11-Jan-23 08:55:19

I have best china (wedding present) that I only bring out at Christmas and antique crystal glasses the same. I still keep my beautiful coffee cups and saucers in the box they arrived in. They were a present too and I always think of the people who gave them to us 54 years ago.

I didn't know that peeling potatoes was old fashioned. I stopped doing it (except for mash) because of the arthritis in my hands but the younger generation in my family prefer potatoes peeled.

Witzend Wed 11-Jan-23 08:50:51

I do make ‘proper’ gravy too, in the roasting tin.

harrigran Wed 11-Jan-23 08:49:18

I iron everything, even dusters.
I wear an apron when cooking.
Table cloths are very much in use, there are four in this week's wash.

Sago Wed 11-Jan-23 08:40:45

I also iron my linen tea towels and husbands hankies.
White linen napkins are starched and ironed but only used on high days and holidays.
I bake my own bread and make butter.
Stock is always made from bones
I write letters.

kittylester Wed 11-Jan-23 08:37:57

Crumbs, I am more old fashioned than I thought.

We use leaf tea and a teapot, China mugs and I make gravy. I don't peel new or baby potatoes but always peel my maris pipers.

Witzend Wed 11-Jan-23 08:34:33

Oh, and I suppose almost always cooking from scratch counts as old fashioned now.

MawtheMerrier Wed 11-Jan-23 08:34:28

Napkins and silver napkin rings.
I also iron teatowels and although I use tissues, keep one of Paw’s tablecloth size hankies in my handbag!

Witzend Wed 11-Jan-23 08:33:41

I do iron white linen table napkins, but then we only use them when we have guests. Otherwise it’s kitchen roll, if needed. I iron pillowcases, but again, only for guests - any other bedding is never ironed.
I still peel potatoes for roast potatoes and mash, but not for boiled or any new potatoes.
We don’t possess any hankies.

Redhead56 Wed 11-Jan-23 08:30:12

I use an apron for baking only I have a table cloth and napkins in rings on the dining table. I make my own pastry and gravy I don’t like ready made. I also peel potatoes when they are for roasting only.
I use a fake feather type duster in the house for picture frames etc. I mop the floor in the kitchen with an old fashioned mop. I only iron what I really have too definitely not hankies don’t have them. Boxes of tissues are a modern thing I appreciate.

Kaimoana2 Wed 11-Jan-23 08:24:57

I wish I could iron because I love that job as well as how good my cotton t-shirts used to look. A whip-shake is just not good enough.

I don't use cotton table napkins or loose tea (can't get it in decaf) but I do all the other stuff.

I don't see it as old fashioned, just common sense.

Like putting coffee grounds on roses and Epsom salts on my tomato plants.

Hospital corners for sheets; washing all the receptacles which go into recycling and keeping jars to fill with chutneys, pickles or lemon curd.

Having scrap paper (old invoices and letter from the tax man!) by the phone and throwing away, immediately any pen which won't write, instead of putting it back into the chipped, but still beautiful mug where pens live.

Hand making bread; scraping every possible last scrap from a mixing bowl.
Scraping butter paper then using the paper to grease the loaf pans.

Am I mad do you think?
grin

Grammaretto Wed 11-Jan-23 08:20:27

I iron tea towels because I wash on a cool wash so I think I am sterilising them with the hot steam iron.

HotfootSue67 Wed 11-Jan-23 08:16:56

Let's just say the old ways are the best ways!

I still use Table cloths

I use Dusters with Wax Polish

I brush up leaves with a brush and shovel.. Not a blower..

BigBertha1 Wed 11-Jan-23 08:04:50

DH does all the ironing including his white hankies , the sheets, the duvet covers and everything else. he is very particular about trousers (golf ones and jeans). I still cook everything (wearing and apron) from scratch, bake bread (but not often) and cakes and biscuits. We eat sitting at the table for breakfast and evening meals. I think we are probably just very old fashioned full stop.

Nanagem Wed 11-Jan-23 08:03:08

I always wear an apron, use a tablecloth and napkins everyday !

I also use loose tea and a tea pot with a cup and saucer !

I don’t use gravy granules 😂,

I have nets at the windows- I hate them but live in a bungalow and my bedroom windows are by the front door so don’t see another way, I’ve been told my the younger family members blinds are better 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh and yes I iron, hankies / pillow slips / tea towels included

I wear an apron when I am cooking and always have a man's cotton hanky in my handbag for the same reasons as AussieGran.

JackyB Wed 11-Jan-23 07:53:44

I peel potatoes. Apparently this is not done any more. However, I don't peel them in a bowl of water like my mother used to.

kittylester Wed 11-Jan-23 07:52:56

I use hankies, table napkins, an apron. All are ironed either by me or the ironing service.

I don't use antimacasas as noone uses hair oil.
