Quick response from St Anthony!

Today (17th) happens to be the feast day of St Anthony of Egypt.

I was brought up to pray to St Anthony (of Padua) to find things. My mother says this never let her down. I do it myself. Things are very often in the place you think they are. You need to keep looking there until you see it!

If it’s Catholics you’re referring to GrammyGrammy we do not pray to dead saints, we ask them to pray for us. Asking St Anthony to help us find something is not praying to him.
As with every question Moggycuddler there are different answers, even with God sometimes the answer is “no”.

GrammyGrammy, you don’t seem to understand a lighthearted thread when you see it. I am sorely tempted to use an acronym borrowed from MN - five letters, beginning with O and ending with D.

I believe in miracles as quite a few have happened to me, but believing in God and miracles is not the same as Father Christmas, not every prayer is answered, I don't know why not. But when Leaonardo Da Vinci and the pope painted God on a cloud it started a myth that God is a man with the power to grant wishes it started a wrong idea. God is a life force which we don't fully understand on earth. But there is some mystic force, of that I'm sure

Do you have to start searching once you've asked St Anthony or will the item just turn up? I've asked him but haven't been searching (I don't know where to search). Will the item appear?

Just to add, my daughter found two missing Brownie badges in her pocket last night as if by magic. We had been wondering where they were but had no idea. Maybe St A thought I was asking about them. 🤔

As a non-believer I'm unlikely to call upon St Anthony which is fortunate for him as he would have a full-time job answering my calls. I lose things all the time - glasses, hearing aids, keys, purse, pens, pencils... I imagine that St Anthony would be more helpful and tolerant than DH whose contribution to the loss of any item is always "...wherever you left it/them".

It's time people moved away from superstition, and I include religion in that. The "power of prayer" does not help people who often need it most. Those with terminal illnesses, sick children, the homeless and helpless. It's delusion. Those who pray and do recover from illness would have recovered anyway, and, sorry dear grans, but you would have found your lost items anyway.

Oh Saint Anthony has bailed me out so many times. He is great for finding parking spaces.

I simply say, " Dear St. Anthony, please find my .... for me and return it."

Right now, I am hoping he will get round to the gold earing I dropped somewhere last Wednesday.

It sometimes takes him a while though - I forgot my amythist rosary given me by my husband when we got engaged in a hotel bedroom. Phoned the hotel and was told it was no longer there, gave it up for lost, but three weeks later it was sitting in its case, staring me in the face just in front of my three black madonnas. I had most certainly not put it there, nor had it been there when I searched the house for it.

St Rita finds lost property too, and no, you don't need to be Catholic to ask any saint for help, or even Christian for that matter.

As some Frenchman said on his deathbed "God will forgive me, it is what He does." I don't remember who the man was, only that he had been a confirmed atheist all his adult life.

I do very little to practise my Catholic religion these days but I am a great believer in St Anthony's ability to help me find lost items. I have never known him fail. My parents were both Irish Catholics and the kindest and most generous people anyone could ever meet. Sadly they both died in their mid-fifties within a year and three weeks of each other. If I could possibly aspire to be even half as good and decent as they were then my life would have been well lived. I believe kindness and compassion will guide us through life and stop us from making many ego driven mistakes.

Oh my some fierce views here! Shouldn’t we allow each to his own at the very least?

I was brought up that you had to put something in the St. Anthony box in church, as a thank you.
We still have one in our church and all the proceeds go to help the poor, because he is the patron saint of the poor.
There is usually quite a lot of cash in it!

My mother was a great believer in St Anthony, but asking his help always involved money "a penny to St Anthony" was offered. In Ireland, shops often had a charity box with a picture of St Anthony, for donations - but only when missing item was found. However, if you didn't pay, another item was liable to go missing!

I've followed my mother's belief, even though I'm not very religious. However, inflation had caused the money offered to increase - I relate the amount to the value of the item!

My glasses have turned up!
I didn't leave them on the hillside yesterday. I must have left them in the kitchen, or did I?
