.. but of course she died aged 27, an ubelievable 53 years ago!

Radio 3 has just played 'Mercedes Benz'.

Mercedes Benz

She wasn't my cup of tea but each to their own.

I remember DS1 being surprised when Mercedes Benz came on the radio = he only knew it from the TV advert and had no idea it was a real song!

Riverwalk I was minus 2 when she died, and I have been aware of Janis since my early teens.
And then I listened to her music a lot in the mid 90s, as a friend was a big fan.
The song Mercedes Benz was used in an ad for, yes, Mercedes Benz, about 20 years ago

I have no memory of her being popular when I was young. After she died she was the poster child for drug abuse. I think she may have been popular as a pop singer in the USA but here? I don't think so. Waste of a life poor thing (whoever she waswink)

She was definitely popular and known here I remember her being on the Tom Jones show! Maybe you're too young to know her - I was 15 when she died in 1970.

I wasn’t keen on her myself, obv in a minority.

"She's up there alongside Kate Millet and Cindy Sherman."
I'm sorry but who and who? I shall Goggle them now but up to this moment I have never heard of either lady and I always considered myself fairly well educated.

FannyCornforth Fri 20-Jan-23 04:51:32

Wyllow I haven’t seen anyone mention Cindy Sherman in, well, forever!
I was made aware of her when I studied feminism and postmodernism.
Anyway, I just googled her, and blow me down, it was her birthday yesterday too!
She was 69 on the 19th January

Wyllow3 Thu 19-Jan-23 20:17:36

I'm not sure how many of the young men I knew were happy with the strength of her quite raw sexuality, quite threatening for some, again, who can say her role if she's have continued?
She's up there alongside Kate Millet and Cindy Sherman.

I was aware of her as soon as I got to Uni (1969) and well...all the counter culture music was out there.
It also coincided with the beginnings of the Women's Movement and she was one of the icons - perhaps her death made her more so, who can say.

Perhaps the best woman rock'n'roll singer ever. Loved her when she sang with Big Brother and the Holding Company- Another little piece of my heart www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hcxbIln3sc
Gone but not forgotten.

And a member of the infamous '27 Club'...

FannyCornforth Thu 19-Jan-23 17:12:41

Thank you Calli and Riverwalk
Blimey, yes she did die before I was born
I read Janis’s biography about 30 years ago.
It’s so dreadfully sad that she died due to drugs.
And so many of that generation, I’m thinking of Hendrix especially

Callistemon21 Thu 19-Jan-23 16:21:59

FannyCornforth

It’s my birthday today too.
And Dolly Parton’s.
Unfortunately, I’m not an iconic singer-songwriter

And I don't think you're 80 today!

Happy birthday, FannyCornforth 🌺🥧🎈

Much appreciated 😘

Gillycats Thu 19-Jan-23 14:02:13

Happy birthday Fanny! Janis was an incredibly gifted musician, what a tragedy to die so young.

Oreo Thu 19-Jan-23 13:36:48

I remember the name but can’t place what she looked like or her songs, I think she was a bit of a wild child when younger.

Sallymander Thu 19-Jan-23 12:24:43

Happy Birthday Fanny 🎈
I share a birthday with Joni Mitchell with whom I also share a talent for singing/songwriting 😉😂
Hard to summon up a mental image of an 80 year old Janis Joplin.

Kate1949 Thu 19-Jan-23 12:18:07

Happy birthday Fanny 🥂🍾 cupcake

FannyCornforth Thu 19-Jan-23 12:09:45

GeorgesGran well, you haven’t had to resort to flogging Smart Metres!

Yammy Thu 19-Jan-23 12:01:06

Happy Birthday FannywineI hope you have a good one.
It doesn't seem so long that we were all listening to Janis Joplin.
I don't know who I share my birthday with Georges Gran but I think I am the day after John Lennon. Maybe my mother should have pushed harder as I was born late at night.
Einstein now that's one to come to terms with relativity was never on my understanding radar.grin
