Only 22% want tighter gun controls in the USA

This I find incredible, especially after yet another mass shooting. This was the figure given out this morning on our national news broadcaster, the ABC,so presumably it was accurate. I know a lot of Americans seem to have a bit of a frontier mentality but really, what are they thinking ?
When the gun laws were tightened up in Australia in 1996 it made a huge difference and it is rare to have mass shooting incidents here now. Don’t they look at other countries ? Perhaps they go with the thought that no one can teach them anything, they are the best and know it all already ?

They likely only polled NRA members

38 mass shootings (more than four people) so far in 2023… www.gunviolencearchive.org/

Thanks for the clarification that it changes by state

I chatted with my military friends on this subject, I may ask them again

Reports of another shooting just now. In Des Moines.

Two students dead and a teacher injured.

It never ends.

Hithere

It is always mandatory to keep them in a safe and away from kids - that's the law

Now, if idiots have them under the pillow and still think it is their right- that is the issue

Irresponsibility gun owners, not the guns

Brother lives in USA and we have a holiday home in a different state. Neither area are under such restrictions.

Carry permits, fingerprint trigger locks, not mandatory gun safes.

To my knowledge not everyone has adopted fingerprint locks.

With a fingerprint lock that 6 yr old child couldn't have shot.

As I said, it came from our national broadcaster who tend to be very conservative in their reporting. That was the reason I was horrified. I have googled but cannot find the survey . It also depends on what they mean by gun control, too. It could be just more background checks or it could be what we did, removing them from almost everyone. I suspect the former which wouldn’t make a lot of difference.

Hithere It varies from state to state and if it was mandatory tto keep guns in a safe, then there would not be so many people with them on their body, in their cars or at hand at work or anywhere else jusyt in a drawer.

A penfriend I had told me she always had one in her ‘purse’
I can’t abide guns they are the spawn of the devil

Look where one under the bed got Oscar Pistorius and his girlfriend

Different "sorts" of guns too. And in different places. One under the pillow, one under the bed, one in different rooms of house. You get the idea.

Indeed.

Each with it's fingerprint trigger lock, for only one person to shoot. Under the pillow, under bed, in car, desk drawer, pocketbook.

I want to ask if the intention is to throw guns at all who must be criminals and shooters, but seems wise to not ask - no need to know.

Given up thinking about the whole subject.

I know people who have spent some time over there. Guns abound. A lot of properties own considerably more than 1 gun. And that is in "ordinary" households too.

I think it has been their way of thinking since the American Civil War. Seems to have scarred them to this day.
They are in preparation for the next time they think they need them against, whatever government or type of government that might be.

At least, that is my interpretation.

Hithere Mon 23-Jan-23 17:20:33

I remember the sick and useless argument that was provided to support the right to carry

A civilian could intervene and help others in a shooter event, when no other help was available

We all know how that didn't happen in Uvalde school shooting.

Lobbyists here a a huge problem too -money talks

That makes more sense, Hithere! I hope the message gets through at some point in the not-too-distant future, but I know you're up against very big and powerful opposition.

There are surely problems: Huge population/number to opinions, many more guns than even that large population, wide open spaces with wild animals, 2nd amendment to constitution (protects the right to keep and bear arms, ratified on December 15, 1791) and the NRA.

All with some "John Wayne mentality" in the mix.

Nah, don't believe it.

People here are screaming for gun control and frustrated for years this has been ignored

USA Brother says the same to you. Divided government, nothing 2nd amendment/SCOTUS gets accomplished.

My USA friends w/small handguns despair government not controlling long, automatic scope rifles (military and police guns in private hands).

NotSpaghetti Mon 23-Jan-23 16:11:42

I don't think this is true.

There is broad public support for a variety of gun control policies, and 71% of Americans say gun laws should be stricter. Majorities favor both policies to restrict who can buy guns and policies banning certain guns, but the most popular regulations are those that limit who can purchase guns. For example, 85% support a federal law preventing mentally ill people from purchasing guns, compared to 59% who support a nationwide ban on semi-automatic weapons.

I think I would want to know a lot more about the survey and the exact questions asked because I have seen severaal other surveys showing that the majority of Americans, in principle, would like some form of gun control, even if it is only tightened checks before buying guns or limiting the number of shots on a band used in any repeater gun.

The proportion wanting a UK type regime, or anything near it is minute, but the figure of only 22% wanting any gun control, does seem to fly in the face of many other polls

Katie59 Mon 23-Jan-23 15:58:07

Where did they take the poll Texas!.

Georgesgran Mon 23-Jan-23 15:54:40

Signs on the way into some shops in New York warned ‘no guns allowed’ with a picture of a handgun with a cross through!
Had to do a double take - unbelievable.
