Carol Vorderman’s Very Modern Love Life

(228 Posts)

Hot on the heels of Prince Harry oversharing intimate details of his life we now have Carol Vorderman appearing on 2 daytime programmes letting the public know how free she feels since deciding she would not have just one male relationship in her life, but 5 “special friends” . (‘Friends with benefits’ in other words).

We discuss other TV revelations on GN and I wonder what do you think of this one?

I've realised something about Gransnet this week.

Its just a place where women feel entitled to call other women names, and feel superior to them. Then defend it by saying they asked for it.

What a disappointment.

Well I dont think any of us particularly likes her self presentation/"showing off" but I don't see "alike" I see a whole variety.

Calling her a "slapper" is def not OK and it hints of pearl clutching to me.

the post well upthread made me laugh on forgetting who she was with as in

"Dave! Dave!

'its Joe actually"

et al.

I’ve got no views on her one way or the other. What she does is up to her as long as they’re all consenting adults. She may regret telling all about her love life, it might be wishful thinking on her part, she might think it makes her relevant and she’s a potential future host for Love Island, who knows? She looks good for her age and takes care of herself because in her chosen industry she has to.

I totally agree with you on this vovler

I have often thought non reading GN lately that I am not sure it’s for me anymore.

Live and let live, I try hard not to be judgemental in real life and on here as I would be horrified if folks were judging my family and I as harshly.

Hear hear GG13.

I would never call her a name. It's her life but she is telling us about it. They are celebrities. They put themselves out there and should expect criticism as well as plaudits. Our families are not going on TV telling the world about our love lives.

Witzend Tue 24-Jan-23 10:01:46

Anything for publicity, staying in the public eye, it seems to me. And yes, yuck.

Yammy Tue 24-Jan-23 10:03:11

Kate1949

I don't believe her. It's showbiz folks.

I think your right Kate, she's keeping herself in the limelight in any way she can to keep getting work.

Kate1949 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:05:40

Exactly Yammy and enjoying every minute of it.

Forsythia Tue 24-Jan-23 10:05:53

I wonder what work she thinks she’ll get though? I thought she had a radio programme but maybe not.

Callistemon21 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:05:54

She looks good for her age and takes care of herself because in her chosen industry she has to

But that's much of the problem, Forsythia

Why do women feel they have to do these things to themselves to be able to stay in work?

She's not taking care of herself, she's pumping herself full of artificial substances, undergoing surgery, why should she feel the need to do this to be able to get work - or a man/men?
Men don't seem to be under that pressure.

She doesn't look like herself any more, sadly.

What kind of message is that sending out to young women and girls? Younger and younger girls think having lip fillers, boob enhancement, bottom implants etc is the way to feel better about themselves and to attract partners.

Sorry, but it makes me cross. If I'm being judgemental, so be it, but I see younger and younger women in the media doing all this to themselves and young girls seeing this and thinking that is what they need to do to to succeed.

Yeah. I've been called a few names this week, and it' only Tuesday. Manifestation of feelings of superiority takes many forms.

Re Carol, I genuinely hope she learns to live within her own skin more easily. That sounds pompous, but I think she is really struggling with getting older, as many people do. She's doing it in the public eye, which is bound to be more difficult as it invites harsh comments. I do think that the 'slapper' remarks are unpleasant though.

Forsythia Tue 24-Jan-23 10:12:21

I agree with what you say Callistemon but I do think some men use a bit of help, Richard Madelyn possibly.

In her industry youth is king. No matter that she is brainy, it’s not enough. She’s doing these things to raise her profile and remind people she’s still around. She probably looks at Holly Willoughby, for example, who has TV stitched up and thinks I could do what she does. So, she might be angling for a fill in slot for when somebody is away.

She isn’t going about it in the right way, but this is her unique selling point, and she’s getting it across to the TV audience. Maybe she’d like to be an agony aunt or be on Loose Women?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:15:40

If people choose to have cosmetic intervention whether they are male or female it is their body and their choice.

These options were only available to the extremely wealthy up to a few years ago, now they are on nearly every High Street and becoming attainable to many.

I am in the never say never category as I do not know what is round the corner…

GrannyGravy I don't like to disagree with you but
what Kate1949 says is spot on:

They put themselves out there and should expect criticism as well as plaudits. Our families are not going on TV telling the world about our love lives

And showing off their body enhancements thus sending out wrong messages to other women and girls.

"Never mind that you're clever, charming and good looking- that's not enough! You have to pump yourself full of artificial substances, undergo unnecessary surgery so that you can stave off the years in order to have a wonderful career and fulfilling love life like me."

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Men don't seem to be under that pressure.

Have you seen Tom Cruise's face lately?

Kandinsky Tue 24-Jan-23 10:20:21

Good for her.
She’s intelligent & beautiful ( & not that old ) I’m sure plenty of male celebrities ( even in their 60’s ) have a life like this.
I’m pretty sure it’s common amongst ordinary people too.

Forsythia Tue 24-Jan-23 10:22:18

I think it’s her life, it’s up to her. She’s not harming anybody. She seems a nice lady, always cheery and smiling. I’ve never heard a bad word about her.

Callistemon21 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:24:05

Possibly, I haven't seen him for years.

A subtle eyelift? Fine, if your self-esteem is low, but no woman should feel under that that kind of pressure in order to stay in work or to find a partner.

Doodledog Tue 24-Jan-23 10:24:11

I think that men do get 'help', but also that even those who don't are valued for their 'wisdom' as they age in a way that women aren't. It's nonsense, of course. I have a soft spot for Richard Madeley - he's like a kindly but embarrassing uncle - but the idea of him as the voice of wisdom is ludicrous. Aging women are seen as 'past it', and the ones who are genuinely wise (eg Mary Beard, Germaine Greer ^et al^) are ridiculed for their appearance rather than revered for their intelligence.

No, does he look 26 not 62 as well?

It is mainly women, though.

henetha Tue 24-Jan-23 10:27:13

I think we need to be a little careful what we say about people.
I know there is the opinion that they're fair game if they put themselves out there. Fair enough.
But they are human with feelings. They are not perfect. Neither are we.

Callistemon21 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:28:45

It's the messages they are sending out to younger, impressionable women and girls in their teens!!

Sorry. I will go now.

Kandinsky Tue 24-Jan-23 10:31:00

The problem is, the viewing public don’t really like to look at unattractive people on TV.
You will never get an extremely unattractive news reader for example, they just wouldn’t get the job.
You have to look good on camera unfortunately.
There have been a few male exceptions over the years, but not many.
