Sweets

Macintosh toffee cup, a smooth milk chocolate bar filled with soft gooey caramel and a shiny red wrapper, definitely my favourite. Does any one know if they’re still made? Anything liquorice, flying saucers and Callard and Bowser Nougat in a pale blue box, a special treat as it was quite expensive. Oh and sweet peanuts that looked like peanuts in their shell which was sweet and crunchy with real peanuts inside.

I remember Winter mix that had a lovely clove flavour.
In the early 60's, when Mum and Dad had a corner shop that sold sweets etc. he made paper cones for the children to take home their sweets. They preferred them to a little bag.

my mum had a sweet shop, I can still remember the lovely smell. I wasn't allowed to take a lot of sweets, but I had several aunties who spoilt me , and I had the fillings to show for it !

Oh dear, sweets...My specialist subject. I always loved them and still do.

There was a sweet shop in our village (now a town) and my dad would always call in on his way home from work on Friday nights, to get treats for myself and my sister. I loved cherry lips, floral gums, satin cushions, pink fish, flying saucers, spearmint chews and fizzy fish. Can't remember my sister's favourites, except that she was more keen on licorice than I was.

My Nana, who lived with us, was a good source of sweets and I would often cadge one off her. She had rose and violet creams, Newberry fruits, Nuttalls mintoes, and butterscotch (not all at once!)

I had some fizzy fish from an "old-fashioned sweetshop" a few years ago but they were a sad disappointment. Nothing like the originals. My greatest sorrow, though, is the non-existence of buttered chocolate. They were a similar idea to chocolate limes but had a thin, crisp coat that tasted a bit like toffee. They were often my chosen treat when we went to the cinema. Alas, they are no more.

50madeleine45. Recently I have only been able to buy plain chocolate Bountys in motorway service shops, goodness knows why?! They are one of my favourites.

In the 1920s my mother gave us a halfpenny or sometimes a penny to spend after school. Sherbet dip, liquerice shoe laces, bar of Nestles chocolate, or lemon sherbets.
On wet afternoons we would make coconut ice or toffee.
Easter my father took us to buy an Easter egg. I always chose a marzipan one.

I grew up in Ireland and used to buy something called (I think) Jersey Bars, consistency of macaroon bars but a creamy colour and no coconut. Does anybody remember them?

Black jacks! Never buy sweets these days (chocolate is another matter tho'!) But when my husband and I were taking autistic son on a steam railway trip, there they were, in the shop, with other traditional favourites. Snaffled half a dozen!

Once my brother took my 10 month old DD to the shops and when she came home she was sucking on something . I said ‘what have you given her ? It smells like a Victory V ‘ . It was ! She was really enjoying it .

I adore parma violets, in fact when I worked abroad my friend's mum used to bring me a supply whenever she came out for a visit.

I suffered with throat ulcers and gentian violet was frequently painted on.
Does anyone remember Floral Gums?
I too love violet creams (and rose) but prefer them in milk chocolate. They’re hideously expensive, so I sometimes make my own.

There was a "proper" sweetshop near where I lived as a child which I'm sure sold beautiful little shiny sweeties called Satin Cushions. They were an odd shape (like cushions?) and in the loveliest colours like lime green, pink, mauve and lemon yellow but I've never met anyone who's also heard of them... did I dream them?

I remember those-they were filled with chocolate.

Great memories! I also liked sweetie cigarettes - funny to think of selling such things to kids now. They came in packs like real cigarettes. My favourites were Clarnico Iced Caramels - softish toffees with pink or white icing. I think they survived till quite recently in pick n’ mix, but not called Clarnico. I also liked ‘dainties’, giant toffees with green wrappers which glued your teeth together. Maybe they were just in Scotland, though.

Look on wholesale sweets- prices not bad on some.especially bulk buys.A lot are sold out though at moment.😐

Cream line toffees, yes! And lovely Woolworths fudge, sold loose. 6d a quarter I think.

Jelly beans....... my dad brought some for me as a treat when I was about 5. They made me sick.
He used to love Meltis Fruits, absolutely horrible.

Loved reading all the posts , brought back some great memories and reminded me of others. We had a lovely uncle who was a farmer and in his old jacket that he constantly wore, one pocket was filled with murray mints and the other had dainty dinah . They were toffees with a wrapper with a lady in a bonnet and skirt in pale mauve. When we were little we wondered if the lady from the sweet shop filled the pockets or got a special big glass bottle filled with the sweets for him! Loved liquorice catherine wheels, liquorice boot laces - must be black not coloured!! What about those violently pink coloured spearmint toffee bars? I only like dark chocolate and miss the chance to have a bounty bar as now you never see the plain chocolate ones just the milk. Well shouldnt be eating them anyway so perhaps a good thing! And yes Kaley with a liquorice stick to lick and stick into the yellow mess - couldnt eat it on the way to school as brightly coloured finger and tongue gave the game away. Those flying saucers I definitely remember. Oh dear had better stop or will be looking at sweets instead of getting my quick lunch made.

Glammergran- loved cough candy- it was sold in chemists shops near the lozenges- yes for a cough! So it was slightly medicinal but you could get it in the weigh- out sweet shops too.My mum always had some in.I saw it recent in local chemist i think(well a couple of yrs ago!) But dunno if still around.Trouble with it was you could get through a whole bag quite quickly as it used to 'melt' as you sucked it.Very sweet though.

The milk man has sweets? Wow sign of the times.
