Hello smile

Inspired by the ā€˜64’ thread.

How old do you really feel?

Do you believe in ā€˜arrested development’ or similar?
In the H***y threads it’s suggested that he ā€˜got stuck’ at the age he was when Diana died.

For me, 11 seems very significant, and also 25 (when my mom died).
I never feel older than 30 in my head.

Physically, it’s a totally different kettle of fish..

Thirties in my head. Older than that at the gym and really old when all the applicants we interview are ECTs. (Used to be NQT).

Get well soon Witzend!

I’m 74 and until very recently I felt about 37 max and indestructible. But similar to Iam64 I was hit like an express train with an infection that had me blue-lighted to hospital for 3 weeks.
Home for 2 days now, feeling* about 107 and knackered!
Early days, though, so šŸ¤ž.
*And looking like something out of The Walking Dead - mind you I have lost 5 kg, not that I would recommend this particular ā€˜diet’!

Since retiring I spend more time with older, mostly retired, friends but that often makes me feel younger, especially if they are showing their age more than me. Having friends of a wide age range through hobbies and interests makes us less ageist I believe. I've always socialised with people both much older and much younger than me so age is unimportant and we don't often think about it until we reach a milestone and everyone makes a fuss of us.

I am in my mid thirties in my head it’s when I accepted my then husband needed to be gone from my life. It made me wake up and gave me courage to do something about it.

I am not so good physically at sixty six with wear and tear more progressed because of past employment apparently.

A friend of mine recently said on her birthday "I've thought of myself as 28 for much of my life, but this year my son will be 28 so that is going to be weird!"

About 20 years ago I was at a friend's 50th birthday party and another partygoer said "I feel the same as when I was 21 but then I look in the mirror and think Who's that old hag?"

I've always accepted my age but liked the fact that most people assumed I was about 10 years younger than I am as my ex husband was a few years younger than me and I had my first child in my mid thirties, so my contemporaries at the school gates were mostly younger than me.

Having lost about 5 stones in weight and started to take regular, though gentle, exercise I now feel younger than I have for years. Unfortunately my grey thinning hair gives the truth away!

I feel the same as I always did. But I am regularly surprised by the following

How can I have friends who are in their 80s
How can I have children who are middle-aged
How can 75 years have passed so quickly
How can I get out of this easy chair without someone noticing my difficulties

I sometimes feel about 12 years old, especially if I'm with grandkids. I'm 76 but in my mind about 40 until I look in the mirror. Just grateful that my body still works pretty well.

HettyBetty Wed 01-Feb-23 21:50:49

About 25 in my head, earlyish 60s in reality.

Touch wood, still very fit and healthy, although I prioritise that. When I overtake teenage boys on my bike on a local steep hill it gives me a ridiculously childish sense of achievement šŸ™‚

Heidijoy I totally agree with you. Thankfully my family do not have any disabling disease in the way yours does, but, DH's family have a history of heart disease and diabetes at a young age. DS has inherited this from his DF and works really hard to keep his weight down and keep fit and eats well.

DD inherited her underlying good health from me. I am in my 80th year and had no medical problems at all, and no pills, until earlier this month, when I too developed high blood pressure.

As with children, it is nurture and nature.

In my 50's, I used think I was mid 30's, but now in mid 60's, my body thinks I'm about 80.

When I was disabled with a back and neck injury and later end-stage Lyme's disease I used to kid around with the elderly, after they gave me a lowdown on all of their ailments, saying that I must be a junior member of the senior club then. I was a nurse for 32 years and witnessed lots of lives at lots of different ages with lots of problems. It always seemed that there were people at any age who seemed "old" - even teens. I embraced flow arts, yoga, dance, swimming, kayaking, being in nature and eating a whole-foods, plant-based lifestyle to beat the odds. Aging is a gift when done with grace. I have 4 handicapped siblings already in wheelchairs and elderly housing at an early age. I'm grateful that I didn't inherit that disease and always prayed that epigenetics was real. All we can do is be the best that we can be. Love everybody. Eat right. Exercise. Pray. At any age.

Me too MrsKen. My prime is just a dot on the horizon if it was at age 50.

MrsKen33 Mon 30-Jan-23 14:06:58

That’s me for the scrap heap then !!!!

Gundy Mon 30-Jan-23 13:15:52

My belief is that a woman only reaches her PRIME at the age 50.

• Shut the door on the past! Let go
• New romance (better than the first few!)
• Start a new career - you can do that!
• Still physically fit and ā€œattractiveā€
• All your wisdom from living gives a new liberating perspective and attitude

That’s where I like to cruise. Doesn’t happen everyday though…
Cheers!

I remember one of the children asking me how old I was a few years back. I instantly said 28. I've stayed that age ever since then. For me it was a fun age. Great career, good money, nice home, no children or big responsibility, money left over after the bills were paid so I could afford to do the sports I loved and go out and have fun with my friends.
I feel in my 90’s because of the conditions I now endure.
Apparently, I look early 30’s (thank you l’oreal)
I'm 42.

sheilabramble Mon 30-Jan-23 12:42:21

I am 9 still looking for fun x

Sawsage2 Mon 30-Jan-23 11:05:21

I'm 71 but mentally 26, physically 80.

Happyme Sun 29-Jan-23 22:46:21

In my dreams (as in when I am asleep....not wishful thinking ) I am always in my forties so guess this is the age my sub conscious has chosen to be.

GreenGran78 Sun 29-Jan-23 22:15:46

I really can't answer the question. I suppose that I've felt pretty much the same age, in my head, since my last child left home, when I was in my late 50s. I'm lucky to be pretty fit and healthy, at 83, and mix quite a lot with younger people through my hobbies. I just count my blessings.

Mallin Sun 29-Jan-23 19:49:31

I’ve always said the best ten years of my life were between the ages of 39 to 40.
Work it out!

JPB123 Sun 29-Jan-23 19:29:48

Chatting and laughing with my granddaughter and her friends
I have great fun and don’t feel old,but sometimes being with my depressed daughter makes me feel ancient

Shizam Sun 29-Jan-23 19:11:55

Every decade has its ups and downs. Think 30s were good, mature enough to cope with life, yet still feeling strong and young. But whatever age we are, it does beat the alternative!

Nicolenet Sun 29-Jan-23 18:46:18

I was looking at cowboy boots recently. Not now that I am going to be 70! I guess I see myself as in my 40's... Sad really

Doggie6 Sun 29-Jan-23 18:25:56

New to this site and really enjoy all your thinking, I’m 19 going on 71, always have been 19 unfortunately I can’t do the same things, stopped looking in the mirrors years ago since I don’t know the old lady looking back at me, so glad I’ve got a good sense of humour.
