The seven deadly sins, which is the worst?

A while ago I went to see a play based on the Seven Deadly Sins ( pride, greed ,wrath, envy , lust ,gluttony and sloth) and have often wondered since which one people feel most vulnerable to and which one people may consider to be the worst. I know that my worst weakness is sloth. I consider myself to be terribly lazy ( eg, right now I should be doing the ironing or cleaning the bathroom), but I feel that the most destructive can be envy, of which I am horrendously guilty. I am not envious of people's wealth or material goods, but I do envy people who seem to have such worry free and happy family and social lives. My manager at work seems to have the most amazing family and I can't help but feel so jealous even though I know it is wrong of me.

These seven sins can lead to serious crimes or much distress to
others.

Yeah, exactly, they’re all bad.

I guess wrath and lust are the the worst two.

Greed is the most destructive sin in my opinion. It can lead people to commit many more terrible sins to achieve money for example or power

Where does self esteem become pride ? Is it wrong to be proud of your achievements?
Greed is the worst in my opinion, people literally holding others back so they can satisfy their want for shedloads of cash or "things" .We see it every day in public life ,we even see people rewarded by governments for it e'g Michelle Mone and many like her .While others cant afford to heat and eat.

Personally, I think the list of seven deadly sins is way out of date and if it was drawn up by an unmarried Cleric even more so.
A modern one would surely include murder and child abuse which we hear about daily.
As for a latter one love thy neighbour not bloody likely I have trie for years and have been slapped back constantly.

Not so much now. Probably gluttony would be the one if any when I see chocolate. Not envy ,we’ve got all we want at our stage of life. Can’t be stuffed with wrath, never been a prob so maybe sloth ?

It is. Envy.

Envy is jealousy of what others have. There is also jealousy which is not envy but possessive jealousy. A man who doesn't want his wife talking to other men for instance. That isn't envy. So the two are very different and I agree that jealousy should be there as well as envy.

Probably coveting your neighbour's ass!

Good question - and far more important than doing the ironing or cleaning the bathroom! I think wrath is the worst, because it can lead to violence and the worst of human nature.

I suppose I am slothful in the physical sense, but providing my brain is quite lively I‘m happy with that.

I agree. Envy and lust can lead to wrath which is the worst and dangerous to others. I think sloth is the least harmful. You're not destroying yourself or others.

Sorry – two towards and two glasses of wine!

They are all truly awful. We should be caring and loving towards towards our family, friends and neighbours, plus those who are having other difficult and painful times. The deadly sins are actually that – deadly and massively harmful.

I had to look them up.

The seven deadly sins, as identified by Pope Gregory 1 in the late sixth century, are considered categories of sin:

Pride
Envy
Wrath
Gluttony
Lust
Sloth
Greed

Hmm.

Not sure why you had to look them up, as OP listed them for you.

I suspect I’m most vulnerable to pride (although I’d deny it) and I’d say the worst is definitely wrath. Controlling anger is something many people seem unable to do, hence so much war, trauma and sadness in this world.

All except Sloth and Wrath here although my capacity for Lust which used to be lively is less so. However Jealously! How I yearn to be good at golf and gaze enviously at those who are.

I think greed is a worst. It comes with selfishness which definitely harms others.

I don’t agree that envy is sinful. Jealousy is though.

crazyH Mon 30-Jan-23 17:08:17

The only people I envy are those who have happy, stress-free, drama-free family lives.

I always thought avarice was one of the deadly sins.

I think this is part of the problems in the world today. A lot of the rich seem to prefer building space rockets or buying yachts than doing something philanthropic

I think Greed is the worst one. It is the one that affects other people the most.

The people who have the most seem to be the greediest. Nahdim Zahawi for example. The Prime Minister’s wife is another one.

Kalu Sun 29-Jan-23 17:36:15

Meaningless to me really.
Man’s inhumanity to man should be top of the list. I will never understand the mindset of anyone who wishes to do harm to others.

MrsKen33 Sun 29-Jan-23 17:34:05

Uncharitableness might be one Anniebach ?

Iam64 Sun 29-Jan-23 17:25:54

The. Catholic Church and Guilt was my thought Callistemon.
I see murder or abuse of others as sins. The rest are reminders not to over indulge ourselves.

Anniebach Sun 29-Jan-23 17:20:28

Not terribly proud , but proud ?

MrsKen33 Sun 29-Jan-23 16:54:00

I think mine might be Pride. I know I am intelligent and I also know I should not look unfavourably on those that are less so.
Not something I am terribly proud of.

Callistemon21 Sun 29-Jan-23 16:53:31

The Catholic Church and guilt!!

Just be kind.
