Whats your best thing since sliced bread?
I say knicker liners and also leggings which are so comfy.

Washing machine, no contest.
Until our son was born in 1971, we used to carry our laundry to the launderette and have half a pint in the pub nearby. But the prospect of nappies (terry towelling then) made me decide that the time had come to get a machine.
Does anyone not have a washing machine nowadays?

As a teenager I’d have said having a shower installed, I hated washing my hair using a big jug over the sink or using those awful shower head contraptions you stuck on the taps. My modern day one would be my i phone.

I see that sliced bread was introduced in 1928 so the possibilities are too wide-ranging. But light-heartedly, which is how I read the OP, sellotape.

987H2001, scarcely a day passes without you introducing a thread of this nature. Are you collecting material for a book, or for sociological research? Just wondering.

I'm another for my Airfryer, saves so much time and money. I updated mine at Christmas to the two drawer one that you can cook at different temperatures, I just love it.
Another is my garden when the weather is nice, its looking pretty awful at the moment though..

What a mixed batch ladies. Yes we had an outside toilet.Dad put a parafin heater in there during winter so pipes didn't freeze. I too think anything that works quickly on bad headaches.I remember a single tub machine with electric wringer. My mother often volunteered me to do the washing and used to say "careful when you're putting the plastic baby pants through or they'll go pop". Don't we appreciate things that make life so much easier or interesting.

My lovely husband who has been my rock through many traumas and who spent most of last year hand-holding me through some very tough health problems and difficult situations. 😍

Apart from DH I would say the dishwasher. It's easy to forget the endless dishwashing and drying after every meal. I don't think I could bear the thought these days to of a traditional Sunday roast with pudding to follow if it wasn't for the trusty dishwasher. So many pans and utensils used. Mind you in our house if you cooked it you don't clear it. But these days with one loading and the other clearing the table, quick wipe down of surfaces and all done in ten minutes.

Closely followed by the dishwasher?
🤔

laptop - with internet
When the wi-fi connection is reliable then it's even better than sliced sourdough.

Grannybags Tue 31-Jan-23 20:44:58

I agree internet, iPhone and laptop

I so wish I could say my DH ( or, in my case, OH). Really envy you Urmstongran , grannyactivist and others. I love my slow cooker, bought as a gift by my daughter, also our bread maker, which we’ve used for about 20 years (it’s been replaced about 3 times). But, my all time favourite, when I was a single mum with two children, was my twin tub washing machine! 😊

EkwaNimitee Tue 31-Jan-23 21:28:11

The internet. Instead of once traipsing down to the library and consulting always out of date reference books every time I wanted to know something about something, (which in my case is probably at least once a minute!), the answer is now instantly there via my iPad.

Taking it as a ‘things’ list

In the 1980’s… automatic washing machine

Since then … mobile phones, lap tops, the internet

dragonfly46 Tue 31-Jan-23 22:18:05

I too took it as a things list and no way is my DH a thing, bless him!

nadateturbe Tue 31-Jan-23 22:23:51

Two things.
My alarm door stoppers.
My husband's foot massage. Every night, so relaxing.

biglouis Tue 31-Jan-23 23:46:35

Computer and internet. Enables me to make a good living.

My new love is an automatic pasta maker. Throw in flour and eggs and out comes whatever pasta you choose.

That sounds good Nanna.

My favourite gadget is my Nicer Dicer. A bit of a faff to wash up but I use it practically daily.

Most - nay, ALL - of the appliances mentioned here. My dishwasher packed up a couple of weeks ago. The technician is due tomorrow. In the meantime, I feel I've spent my whole days washing up.

Nana3 Wed 01-Feb-23 11:00:56

Central heating. Memories of being so cold when growing up.
Television and radio are important to me too.
