One country you haven’t visited but would love to - and vice versa

Apart from war torn or dangerous places like Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria etc that is
I’d love to visit Canada and see a wolf in the wild.
I wouldn’t want to visit India, it doesn’t appeal with the vast differences between rich and poor. Many people love it, I know that but I just never have felt a desire to go there.

Everywhere has something of interest doesn't it although places filled with British holidaymakers don't appeal at all.
My grandparents are buried in Burma and New Zealand. I've seen the NZ graves but not the Burmese ones.
One DDiL is part Lebanese but has never been there because of the political situation especially in the Bekka Valley where her ancestors were.
If I were her, I'd be keen to go.

My DC have between them been all over the world so I am happy to live vicariously.
I lived in NZ until the age of 10 and travelled here by ship stopping in Australia, Africa and the Canaries.
Now my DS lives in NZ so I fly out when possible. not very often and have enjoyed stopovers in Singapore, Tokyo and Australia.
I have never been to the Americas but have little desire to.

Marmight Colin Thubron hasn’t written a book I haven’t loved! I don’t understand why he’s not better known as a travel writer.

Vietnam is nice. Being over this way, I have visited most of the countries around here but no African countries or India except an airport transfer once. A really good place was Raratonga, lovely people .

India. Also Thailand, Cambodia etc. Also Japan, although I did spend a night in Tokyo between flights twenty years ago. Everyone bowed to me, extremely courteous folk. I was shocked at how everyone in UK was so rude when I touched down backnin blighty!!

It used to be Iceland I was mad keen to visit, but I’ve gone off that idea now.
Out of interest, I’ve just listed all the countries I’ve visited - 31 - and that includes 3 that we lived in, but I’ve probably forgotten one or two. The only continent missing is S America. Dh visited a lot more for work.

We visited Syria and the Lebanon back in the early 70s - we had planned to return to Syria, particularly to see Aleppo, missed the first time and said to be wonderful - but I gather that’s been terribly damaged in the fighting. So sad.

When we visited before (on our own, not a package) there were no other tourists to be seen at all. We got lost in Damascus, all the signs were understandably only in Arabic, and it took us ages to find anyone to ask who spoke French or English.
That was a very memorable trip.
Beirut was then the ‘Paris of the Middle East’ - very exciting and sophisticated - I do feel very sad for poor old Lebanon now.

I know it’s very boring of me, but I don’t hanker after visiting anywhere else at all.

Marmight have you read Colin Thubron’s book In Siberia? It’s stunning. www.waterstones.com/book/in-siberia/colin-thubron/9780099459262

Thanks for the recommendation Sudonim. It looks very interesting …..also his book on the Silk Road

Quite modest, but I would like to tick Vienna, Salzburg and Prague off my list.
I have no interest in visiting the Far East, but I’m sure it would be fascinating if I ever did.

I fulfilled my wish to visit Croatia this year and I loved it, so next on my list is Northern Norway and the Lofoten Islands.

I really don’t want to visit NZ again, it’s my least favourite destination, but as my daughter and her family live there I shall probably end up doing one more trip.

Japa - just to experience the bullet train

I would love to visit Finland.
Have no desire to go to USA at all.

Finland is lovely.
Very cold in winter though (the sea can freeze!) but it can have lovely hot summers.

I’s like to visit Canada ( not gonna happen)sad
Wouldn’t want to go to China.

grandMattie Fri 03-Feb-23 21:58:56

Not a particular country, but I’d love to “do” the Silk Road from start to finish.
Iran for the Persian culture.

We visited Iceland in the 80s. The highlight of the tour was a garden centre. They’ve got their tourist act together since then.

One of our most memorable holidays was Iceland the scenery speaks for itself. We made the mistake of going there before visiting Norway and we spent the whole holiday thinking Iceland was better.

I would love to have done the trans Russia to China rail trip mainly to see Lake Baikal. (Having read Consolations of the Forest by Sylvain Toussin). It won’t happen now sadly. It’ll have to be Canada & Alaska

like biglouis I have also been to Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq and thoroughly recommend all three. I was fortunate to live and work in these countries and would love to revisit them. I also worked in Yemen where I had bodyguards 24/7 because of the threat of kidnapping. Again, I would love to return as it's a spectacular country. My job has taken me to many of the more 'dodgy' countries and I guess my trips around these countries were more enjoyable because of the lack of tourists! Unfortunately the Taliban put a damper on any more 'adventurous' holidays following a run-in with a car bomb in Kabul. This, along with osteoarthritis has really limited my options but I'm determined to get to Sudan one day. I have wanted to visit the Nubian pyramids for years and even if I have to crawl, I will do it. It's there or Bognor!

Finland sounds fascinating

Maggiemaybe Fri 03-Feb-23 19:59:18

I’m glad we’ve been to lots of places as I seem to have lost much of my enthusiasm for travelling now, or at least for organising trips. grin

But I would like to see more of Canada and the USA. And go to Mexico - we had a tour booked once which was cancelled by the organiser.

I’d go anywhere out of curiosity, but rich people’s playgrounds like the UAE are at the bottom of the list.

Poppyred Fri 03-Feb-23 19:57:09

North America is a beautiful country, have been there many times.

You would have to pay me to go to South Africa or Dubai.

Forsythia Fri 03-Feb-23 19:52:33

I’d love to go to New Zealand in the not too distant future. I’ve never been to America and have no interest in going there either.

Deedaa Fri 03-Feb-23 19:50:39

DH always wanted to take me to Sweden after he'd driven round there a few times. Sadly it never happened.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Fri 03-Feb-23 19:45:29

Hope to go to Argentina where my late mother-in-law was born.

Have been to the Dominican Republic, wouldn’t go back if you paid me.

I thought Argentina was wonderful GG, but if you think we have a bit of inflation ......[shock just] take US Dollars.

I would love to visit Positano in Italy and hopefully will be going in the near future. Many years ago I opened a magazine to a picture of it and fell in love. I tore out the pic and stuck it to the inside of a cupboard think Shirley Valentine. My lovely daughter is taking me for my 60th birthday gift when we can arrange it. I couldn’t believe it when she told me.
