House No. 13 - would it bother you?

Ours is no. 13, and I hardly ever give it a thought, but a guest remarked on it the other day.

When we bought it, in 1977, neither dh nor I even gave it a thought, and it’s been a happy house for us.

Would it put you off, or do you know anyone who wouldn’t touch it? We’re not thinking of selling (I hope that’ll only happen after we’re gone) but I’ve been wondering whether it’ll eventually reduce the price a bit, or make it harder to sell.

I'm not superstitious at all so it wouldn't bother me.

When I was in labour I was very keen for my son to arrive before midnight on the 12th because my daughter's birthday was the 12th and I thought it would be nice and easy to remember. My brother and I were both born on 27th of different months. Unfortunately my labour dragged on somewhat and he was born on Friday 23th! The nurses assumed it was because of superstition not me liking the idea of both children having birthdays on the 12th!

I live in a semi detached, number 15 joined onto number 13. Every family who have lived there have been happy with it.

My grandparents lived at no. 13 and it was the happiest house in the world!

There is no number 13 in my street. It wouldn't bother me, I think I would be more concerned living in number 9 having watched every Steve Pemberton TV series.

My marriage went down the pan when we lived at No.13, would have happened anywhere we were living!

How can a number hurt you of course I wouldn’t mind living at 13

Never put any shoes on the table. Nothing to do with superstition but once they’ve been on the floor, even if only to try them on, we just don’t do it.

3rd millennium and people still talking superstitious nonsense ! I walk under ladders ….got married on fri 13th …..put new shoes on table…cross on stairways…. and never bother throwing salt over my shoulder….and any other stupid stuff people worry about…. aren’t there enough real problems at the moment!?

Coco51 Sat 11-Feb-23 20:40:09

I’d quite like it, or 7.

HiMay Sat 11-Feb-23 18:20:44

Not superstitious

Arto1s Sat 11-Feb-23 18:11:39

I like to be contrary, and so would consider 13 to be a lucky number for me!

Wyllow3 Sat 11-Feb-23 17:00:57

I wouldn't. I cannot justify it in anyway whatsoever and am not generally superstitious.

I think around that time private builders were using the No. 13. My house was built around that time but was built by a local builder who went bankrupt and sold them on to the local Council. I am No. 11 nextdoor is No. 15. So the council obviously missed out 13. I don't know if they still do. Next time I go to my friends flat I will check if they have a No. 13.

As I was born in (and grew up in) No. 13, nope, not superstitious about the number.

However, whoever numbered the houses round here (builder/GPO) either is or thinks house buyers are - several roads go 11, 15, 17...

I don't think it would bother me, other than that it might put people off when we come to sell the house.

Gabrielle56 Sat 11-Feb-23 14:28:00

Sometimes there a 12a and no 13 our first flat was113 didn't think of it! It's just superstition and hokum anyway!

JdotJ Sat 11-Feb-23 14:22:16

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. We've older twin grandchildren born on 13th of a month and then last year our DS and DiL had a baby on the 13th of another month. Delighted. Only a number.

My mother insisted that no good hostess seated 13 people at a table, not because she herself was superstitious about it, but because a visitor might be. I remember her on one occasion where someone dropped out, scrambling around to find a friend of one of us children who could come to that lunch!

Yes, the supersition is said to be because there were commonly supposed to have been thirteen at the last supper.

So in my book being superstitious about 13 only applies to people eating together.

I would not bother me to live in no. 13, or to make appointments on Friday the 13th either.

Our 1920s house was 11A when my parents bought it in 1955. They changed it to 13 at once. My brother and I spent a happy childhood there. The house was compulsorily purchased by the Ministry of Transport in 1967 to make way for the proposed extension of the M23, which never went ahead. Sadly by that time, my Mum was stricken with cancer (aged 44) and died shortly after. So, who knows……. I’m not superstitious, the house is still there with many more built around it!

I’ve seen houses labelled 12A rather than 13.

My Mum lived in a retirement flat numbered 12A. I don't know who they thought they were kidding!

Grannynannywanny Sat 11-Feb-23 13:43:40

I’ve been here at no 13 for nearly 30 years. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

knspol Sat 11-Feb-23 13:38:20

Have been in several hotels/office buildings abroad with no floor no. 13 and in the China no floor no.4 which is also considered unlucky.

Nannapat1 Sat 11-Feb-23 13:26:09

It hasn't bothered me for a quarter of a century now!

Glasgo Sat 11-Feb-23 13:19:33

Me too yogitree, married on Friday 13th. I have never been superstitious.
