House No. 13 - would it bother you?

Ours is no. 13, and I hardly ever give it a thought, but a guest remarked on it the other day.

When we bought it, in 1977, neither dh nor I even gave it a thought, and it’s been a happy house for us.

Would it put you off, or do you know anyone who wouldn’t touch it? We’re not thinking of selling (I hope that’ll only happen after we’re gone) but I’ve been wondering whether it’ll eventually reduce the price a bit, or make it harder to sell.

It wouldn't bother me.

I'm not sure it would bother me in the context of a house number, Such a ridiculous premise I know, but Friday 13th does resonate depending on what I'm planning, I'd never fly on Friday 13th for example, outside of that nonsense superstition, I tend to regard it as just another number

My DD lived in number 13 and was very happy there. My GS spent his first years in that house.
I think these days people aren't as superstitious as they were.
I have seen streets where there was no number 13.

It wouldn't bother be at all

Friday 13th has always been lucky for me.
I once lived at no. 13 and was very happy there.
I have lived in my present house for 26 years and it was my 13th house move.
I have a much-loved cat and she is the 13th cat I have had in my life.

No concern for me had it been an option.

Yammy Wed 08-Feb-23 10:56:04

It wouldn't bother me.
We got quoted "Change the name and not the letter change for worse and not for better." Well, I did it and two cousins and an aunt. We have all been happy. The only thing I probably would not do is walk under a ladder and that would be for safety's sake.

I’ve seen houses labelled 12A rather than 13.

Witzend Wed 08-Feb-23 11:07:22

Yes, 25Avalon, our guest the other day said she’d known of more than one 11A (even numbers on the other side of the road).

We’ve lived in No 13. A lovely house and we enjoyed living there.

NotSpaghetti Wed 08-Feb-23 11:27:55

No. I wouldn't care.
Maybe some would.

I lived at number 13, a year later I was a single mother. However, I also live on the 13th floor and lived through an earthquake but it wasn’t at the epicenter.

I like to think that I am educated rather than superstitious.

Mollygo Wed 08-Feb-23 12:43:51

Not bothered. My only concern about buying a house number 13 would be in case it put some buyers off if we ever wanted to sell. Friday 13th was lucky for us.

It wouldn't bother me at all. I am a scientist and a realist, how can a number possibly bring bad luck?

I have a superstitious friend whom I saw at a petrol station waiting in the queue but she refused to use pump 13 when it became vacant. Crazy!

MiniMoon Wed 08-Feb-23 13:01:51

I grew up at No. 13. It didn't bother me in the slightest.

rafichagran Wed 08-Feb-23 13:04:10

No, not at all.

Grandmabatty Wed 08-Feb-23 13:12:16

I live at No. 13 and am very happy here. It never occurred to me when I bought it!

AGAA4 Wed 08-Feb-23 13:14:22

Was the origin of this superstition that there were 13 people at the last supper?

welbeck Wed 08-Feb-23 13:21:02

as a child, we lived opposite house number 13.
one day the lady there was cleaning her front step.
i was speaking to her. i looked at the black number 13 on the dark green door, and idly asked if she minded.
she looked up at it and smiled saying it had not done her any harm.
she told me she was happy as it was her birthday, and she'd thought she was 62, but in fact was only 61.
she was a good woman and i became very fond of her. over a short time. as she died less than a year later.
and i wished i had not mentioned the number. still do.

My friend lived in a No 13. She had a very unhappy marriage.

B9exchange Wed 08-Feb-23 13:32:45

There is a No 13 in our road, occupied by the neighbour from hell. The rest of our neighbours are really lovely!

Grandma70s Wed 08-Feb-23 13:39:42

Our first house was in a row of (then) modern town houses. There was no number 13. The numbers went 10 11 (ours) 12 14 15. We though it was very funny, but I suppose the architects/builders knew a number 13 would be hard to sell.

No, it wouldn’t bother me at all.

Blondiescot Wed 08-Feb-23 13:41:15

I'm not superstitious, so I don't think it would bother me. My son and his then wife did live in a No 13 before everything went pear-shaped, but that was all down to his wife and would have probably happened no matter where they were living. On the other hand, I do know quite a few people who do seem to have an issue with the No 13 though. One actually refused to get on a flight to Spain one year because they'd allocated her a seat in row 13!
