Six year old beef lurking in the freezer.

I just discovered a roast beef in the depths of my freezer and was shocked to see the date on it was December 2016. Would you cook it and see how it turns out or just toss it?

Smileless2012 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:26:21

I'd throw it out Llamedos. It might look, smell and taste OK when cooked but you wont know for sure unless you eat it.

I’d cook it, but not for guests as whilst it should be perfectly safe to eat, the texture and maybe taste will have deteriorated. I don’t throw any food away unless it’s growing a fur coat!

Llamedos13 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:31:58

Definitely not got a fur coat🤣

ParlorGames Sun 26-Feb-23 12:34:15

Could you play safe and donate it to a local wild life sanctuary rather than throwing it away?

Agreed. Stew it slow and long rather than roast.

I would cook it slowly too. I cooked and ate something of a similar age recently also found at the back of the outside freezer; we were fine.

Gosh! I’d just eat it. Wasn’t there a story a long time ago about people finding a mammoth frozen and they were so hungry they ate it?

I'd do that too but I'd make sure I had egg and chips on standby in case!

That is assuming your freezer was at -18C for all that time, of course 🙂

We used to eat meat. My favorite way to cook "too long frozen" beef is Ropa Vieja. Easy, long cooking, flavorful.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 26-Feb-23 12:51:12

I’d defrost it, cook it and donate it to a deserving cat or dog.

twiglet77 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:55:18

I’d be happy to eat it. I’ve just had pheasant frozen since 2016!

Callistemon21 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:59:35

I've made jams and jellies from blackcurrants which were 5 years old. DH would have thrown them out but I just didn't tell him. He enjoyed it.

Llamedos13 Sun 26-Feb-23 13:36:11

It’s in the slowcooker, I’ll let you know how it turned out in about ten hours.Callistemon I’m definitely not telling him, I know he’d bin it.

i would dice it and cook it as if it was venison. Lots of veg plus stock cubes and oxo cubes, and plenty of red wine.

If the meat isn't edible the gravy will be gorgeous

Shelflife Sun 26-Feb-23 14:12:07

I would definitely make sure it is thoroughly defrosted then would cook in a conventional oven - if it tastes and smells ok then it probably is! I must sort my freezer out and see what is lurking there !! Most certainly would not throw it away - enjoy ☺️

BlueBalou Sun 26-Feb-23 14:25:46

I’d eat it, probably slice it into chunks, cook it long and slow in the slow cooker with shallots, mushrooms, red wine and beef stock .

Just took it out of the slowcooker and it’s falling apart tender and tastes delicious.😋Next up to try the 2017 lump of frozen pork.

ExperiencedNotOld Sun 26-Feb-23 21:22:09

Do you have a pressure cooker.? I have an electric one and it’ll tenderise anything.

Arrabbiata is fantastic, even if made with "long in freezer" pork.

Thank you Norah, I’ll check it out.

Casserole it, if it tastes OK eat it, if not the dog gets a treat.

LisaAN Mon 27-Feb-23 00:40:36

I‘d cook it for the cats.
