Short School Skirts.

Nothing new, a Merseyside school is pulling schoolgirls over and measuring skirt lengths, too short.

This was being done when I was at school, in the 60’s.

The main difference it was our senior mistress who did the measuring, not male staff, which seems to be happening now. Don’t agree with that (the males measuring), but looking at some of our local girls on their way to school, they’re skirts hardly showing below their blazers.

‘‘Twas ever thus” I suppose.

(My parents, by the way, would totally have backed the school).

I don’t think that skirts have ever been as short as they are now, girls have to wear dark shorts under them and dark tights.
Must be a challenge for all those teenage boys at school!

Some schools insist on a particular type of skirt that has a waist band with tiny spikes (or something) in it, that makes it uncomfortable to wear with the waist band turned over.
How weirdly medieval is that!
I’ll see if I can find a link, as it sounds like I’ve made it up!

I’m starting to think that I have made it up confused

My elder sister wore her skirt so it resembled a belt. I was never that bothered about shirt length. As long as I coull wear my knee length white socks. School tried to ban these but failed.

We had a headmaster. He took great pleasure in lining us all up. Right leg cocked behind us and he'd measured our heels. He was rather creepy.

we used to have to kneel on the floor and the hem had to touch the floor. It didn't appear to stop girls getting pregnant though before their exams had been taken

‘their’ not ‘they’re’ in OP.

I see girls at my local secondary school who I sometimes think have forgotten to put their skirt on. But they are young and it's their right. I wouldn't deny them that. "Gather ye rosebuds ..." and all that.
Mind if my DGD goes for that as she gets older I can imagine my DS not liking it!

I do remember once remarking to a teenage friend that her skirt was shorter than her earrings. She said "that's the sort of thing my mother might say"

Kate1949 Sun 26-Feb-23 13:42:22

We used to roll ours over at the waist when we left home, roll them back down at school then back over when we left school. I'm not sure skirts are shorter now. Mine we're pretty short.

We had to do that JaneJudge it's a shame the French teacher didn't lead by example, hers was what my mother would call a pelmet.

Twas ever thus, certainly back in the 60ies. We had the “kneeling on the floor” rule where skirts had to touch the floor. Later, in the school where I taught, a ruler was used as girls knelt, as skirts had to be no more than two inches from the floor.
At least girls wear dark tights now rather than white socks.
Personally, I think teachers have better things to do than check and give punishments for uniform infringements. Management needs to have a rethink.

As a teacher, I used to get fed up with girls in skirts so short I could see bum cheeks. With protests of 'body shaming' if it was brought up.

All, boys, girls, trans, should wear trousers. IMO. Cut out all the problems.

But then they would leave the top buttons of their blouse undone Gagajo I remember a girl complaining and calling a boy a "pervert" because he was staring at her cleavage, he was, of course, the 'wrong' boy, not the one she was targeting!!

Odd isn’t it. In the sixties and seventies it was long haired boys and men causing consternation amongst the adults.
When I was at senior school mid seventies*it was wearing a short stubby tie and top blouse button undone paired with almost ankle length skirts and huge clomping great platform clog-type shoes ( always with pewter grey nylon tights) and from my memory probably a *feather cut hairstyle to complete the look. Anyone remember that?
Trousers not allowed then at our school but Oxford bags and tank tops over blouses with huge collars was the other “look” of those times.
Then when my son was at school - nineties, it was very short hair with shaved sides - think Peaky Blinders, this was considered by the head to be aggressive and intimidating ! Always with the shirt hanging out though that was crucial to the look.😉

I did see a picture of a schoolgirl wearing ankle grazer type trousers who was admonished for showing her ankles, I think she was told they could be deemed some sort of "sexual turn on" good grief! clearly in the mind of someone who is back in the 1890s shock

Another waist roller here, as short as we could get away with, outside of school, the nuns at my convent were of the opinion that patent shoes some sort of deviant/sinner's footwear, one's knickers could be seen in them allegedly! I think one smart arse said "oh well I just won't wear them then" the nun who was advising us on the appropriateness of our footwear was temporarily speechless, trying to work out whether "I won't wear them" referred to the shoes or her knickers shock

I had a French teacher like that!
I loathed her and she really put me off the subject, which I regret to this day.

We’ll call her Mademoiselle Walsh.
Anyway, I was in a lift at school with a couple of other female teachers, and I overheard one saying to the other;

‘She’s far to old to be calling herself Mademoiselle’

I was thrilled! grin

My French teacher was sleeping with the science teacher. We sometimes saw them snogging. We responded with great maturity as you can imagine.

Granmarderby10 Sun 26-Feb-23 14:15:21

TerriBull thats’s brilliant. Convent education eh- the gift that keeps on giving😉

Granmarderby10 Sun 26-Feb-23 14:22:14

I wear ankle grazers, they pair well with my very comfy but chunky looking trainers. Also they solve my “shrinking woman” problem, I’m sooo fed up with too long trousers like some standard length ones I bought recently from M&S, they are voluminous in all the wrong places.

Shelflife Sun 26-Feb-23 14:54:36

Surely all school students should wear trousers - problem solved!

My French teacher had a thing with the art teacher, and the science teacher always had half bottle of whisky in his lab coat.

At my granddaughters school it’s trousers for everyone.
That saved a lot of tears every morning 😄

Visgir1 Sun 26-Feb-23 15:08:59

I used to roll mine up..
Then the fashion changed and skirts became Midi.. We got into trouble for wearing skirts that were too long.

Hithere Sun 26-Feb-23 15:12:31

Shaming girls based on uniforms is another way society fails women
