Short School Skirts.

I remember wearing short skirts too but rara skirts were in fashion lol those were the days. Now my 12yr granddaughter is doing the same thing turning it up on way to school I think it’s something we all have done or most of us. My ex daughter inlaw was saying she leaves with it normal length and doesn’t want her to attract the wrong attention but she doesn’t get what her mum is saying but guess we didn’t neither lol

The length of the skirts doesn't affect the way they learn.My GD wears skirts that are very short ,shes currently picking subjects for next year and we were surprised she's going down a science route with Chemistry,Physics and Biology on her list .

This is a girl who can apply makeup like a professional makeup artist and who wont even think about not having her nails done .
She's in a state school that wont let the girls wear leggings under skirts ,she says its because the head teacher is "pervy" and often checks the girls loos to "make sure no one is smoking" .
My Dad used to tell me I'd get arrested for indecent exposure when I was 14 ,my mum used to tell him it was the fashion....and you're as well dead as out of fashion at that age .lol

At my Grammar School in 1950’s the uniform was a gymslip, so no skirt.

I live on Merseyside, the sights I see on the bus! The schoolgirls here don't bother with tights, they just wear ankle socks with their teeny tiny skirts, but their legs are waxed and oiled like strippers' limbs.

The other thing that baffles me is the amount of makeup they are wearing to school, caked in foundation, smeared in lipstick, and of course, the ridiculous weighty jet black false eyelashes.

I think the schools should ban makeup, and insist on trousers for all pupils, allowing shorts (of a reasonable length!) in the Summer Term.

Yup. And as teachers, it's terrible having to be around these young people showing their underwear, and in summer, intimate anatomy. Yet if we say anything, we're wrong for looking.

Am I just getting old I don't know because some of these micro mini skirts I see on some girls just look out of place and cheap.
I go to a meeting for work once a week at a different office, and park the same place every time. I could not help but notice
a car usually arrives there also probably school collection time.
There is a young girl about fourteen gets out and her skirt is approx: one and a half inches from where her underwear will start. The girl has the same clothes each week short skirt, black tights, and her school blazer. I do not know how the school allows this and such a slur on the school involved.
The thing is her mother is left sitting in the car and must just allow her to wear the skirt like that. there is a time and place for wanting to follow the fashions but it is not at school.

I worked at an exclusive private school, with a mandatory unifom for a while. One canny young lady took her standard blazar to a tailor and had it personalised from the usual boxy shape into a waisted and very flattering style.

Some parents seem to try to turn their daughters into little clones of themselves at 8 yrs of age .

Most teenagers are going to be rebellious, whatever. It's not a bad thing that there is something unimportant to be challenging about. School uniform and hairstyles couldn't really matter less.
I've had experience in German schools and while it is true that the pupils wear jeans etc., there is huge pressure on them to have the right expensive labels.
And by the way - kilts: they are a nightmare to keep pressed and look awful if not looked after properly. Why on earth do some schools still insist on skirts for girls at all?

I wore the skirt knee length the school was strict on that no earrings no makeup. I had the feather cut too but it wasn’t very effective with curly hair.
My DS and DD went to the same school I went to and they were still strict on uniform. My GD both wear knee length kilts with shorts underneath.

Without all the leggings and dark tights would shorts be worn so short at school. How the girls sit down with any modicum of decency evades me. Watched a group of girls trying to get on the school bus, they had to turn sideways to try to get on the low step up, bus driver checking passes. How they can be comfortable going about day to day in a school having to adopt awkward positions to protect their modesty and others' embarassment is beyond belief.

I did not see the article about this but obviously same old same old!! When I was at school we had to wear a skirt and were not allowed to were trousers in the winter , which I thought stupid sinply because of the cold. My youngest sisters school was eminently more sensible and pupils were asked to wear grey uniform, but could be home made or bought , not including an extravagent blazer. Girls could wear skirts or trousers as they wished and it was much more sensible and practical and there was very little problems with it. In times like these no doubt parents would be glad of such a system which did not make a pupil stand out for lack of some fancy blazer

At my nieces primary school girls have the option of wearing shorts or a skirt with short leggings under it. And at her older sisters high school all students male or female have the option of wearing long pants and polo shirts. Both of my neices choose the pants options

I would leave my house for school with skirt down to my knees. As soon as I left I would roll it over and over at the waist till it was a mini. So I can't really criticise. Think difference between then and now is that our skirts weren't skin tight like they are now.

We had skirt measuring at my Grammar School for Girls in the 1950s - the ritual kneeling before the headmistress and her tape measure. I'm amazed it still goes on. I think the very short skirts on today's schoolgirls look ridiculous (how cold must it be in winter?) but I think they should be free to wear them like that if they want to. School uniform is always going to get adapted and tweaked to whatever is deemed to be the latest fashion. No big deal. My pet hate at school was the regulation navy blue beret that most girls pinned flat to the back of their head like a flying saucer. Berets worn out in the street were snatched off the head and hurled into the road by Secondary Modern school pupils chanting "Grammar bugs, pull your lugs".

Have to admit that I used to roll up my skirt waistband - so that it was ON my knee! Skirts are far too short now and coupled with makeup and false eyelashes don't do the girls any favours. They just look cheap. There's a time and a place to show thier own personality and school is not it.

I fully agree with girls wearing trousers instead of the ultra-short skirts that so many seem to wear, although as a teenager in the 1960's I do remember the mini-skirts we all wore then .

But if girls wear trousers, can it please be trousers and not skin-tight leggings that show their knicker line; even plain coloured trackie bottoms are better than just leggings

It doesn't matter what you dress schoolchildren in, they will always find some way of evading restrictions.

Danish schools don't have uniforms or dress codes at all.

Basically, this means that most girls wear jeans to school, so there is no bother about skirts being too short. The occasional very short skirt can usually be tactfully dealt with by a woman teacher pointing out on the QT to the girl involved that she needs to be careful when sitting that she is not displaying her legs all the way up to the crotch of her underpants.

Some years ago we did have trouble with the bare midriffs that were fashionable - parents objected when schools tried to forbid crop tops as inappropriate school-wear!

The same applied when teachers objected to teenage boys going around with their jeans half-way down their bottoms and their underpants or even half their bare botttom on show.

This latter case was dealt with by the girls in the same form walking behind the boys loudly singing a moderately rude song they had made up about this phenomonon, which they didn't find attractive in the least;

We, the staff, saw no reason to intervene.

Girls displaying too much of their bosoms could usually be solved by teachers (female) pointing out that the boys in the class could hardly be expected to concentrate on anything apart from their classmates' cleavage. As 15 -16 year old girls as a rule are not interested in boys the same age, preferring them a couple of years older, most of them covered up a bit more in class.

My DD wore Kilts for school until 16 they were the bane of their life, as they were not allowed to put kilt pins in, the kilt blew open whenever there was a wind.
I had to sit with a berry on for 8 miles to and from school through country lanes.When we left we threw them into a river we crossed and the boys did their caps.
The best laugh we ever got was the town had a huge statue of some Viceroy of India, one morning when we went past it had been dressed in school uniform.The head demanded it be taken off but of course, no one would volunteer so he had to get the local council.
I think however nice the uniform teenagers will always try to customise it.

My GC’s grammar school has introduced a tartan kilt type skirt as part of the uniform.

Both GD and DIL think it’s awful, and haven’t bought one, but I saw a girl walking to school in one, (regulation length) and I thought how nice it was.

Different generations I suppose.

At my granddaughters school it’s trousers for everyone.
That saved a lot of tears every morning 😄

I think this should be the rule. It would make life much easier.

School uniforms are there to be customised by pupils. I once insisted my daughter had a new skirt for year 10. She wanted to keep her year 9 skirt, which I said fitted like a pelmet. I prevailed but it was one of those tear your hair out mum incidents.

I’m not a fan if uniform. You see students leaving high school in other European countries in the uniform of choice - jeans and a variety of coats and boots.

I was at secondary school in the 1970s. I was bought a good quality M&S skirt to start and always rolled the waist band back as far as I could to make it as short as possible. Eventually as I grew the skirt became short anyway. At least my mum got away with only buying one skirt for me during all those silly teenage years.

I don’t think that skirts have ever been as short as they are now, girls have to wear dark shorts under them and dark tights.
Must be a challenge for all those teenage boys at school!

How exactly is it a challenge?

I remember my daughter taking part in an inter school fun-run thing. The girls were all in hot pants and skimpy vest tops. The boys just wandered about with eyes on stalks! I said to my friend “no wonder boys do less well in mixed sex schools, they had limited blood-flow to their brains”
That’s their challenge!
