I made the decision last week to cut out coffee.

Why? Well i am lead to believe that I am going through the menopause and read that lowering your intake of coffee helps, so i thought sack it, i will stop it all together.

Has anyone else made this choice and if so what are the benefits?

Thank you. Smile 😃

I cut out caffeine.

I switched to decaf tea and coffee, no chocolate or fizzy drinks containing caffeine.

I couldn’t live without my 2 strong bean to cup coffees in the morning. But not after 12pm. I did get palpitations in my 30’s till I realised it was due to having 5 large mugs a day of cafetière coffee. Knocked that on the head. I can’t say it had any effect on menopausal symptoms though.

Always de caf tea and coffee for me . I buy Percol coffee from Morrisons - instant but very good.

Thank you for your replied. The 1 reason i cut out the coffee was TRYING to help with the anxiety plus by doing other things to help......

Bizarrely, I'm actually trying to drink MORE coffee - after being advised to do so by my liver consultant. At a previous appointment, he asked if I drank a lot of coffee and when I said I didn't really drink much at all, not even a cup a week, I was honestly gobsmacked when he said I should seriously consider drinking more! And showed me the scientific research to back it up...

crazyH Thu 02-Mar-23 19:24:09

Wow Blondiescot - going down to kitchen for another cup of coffee 😂

Many (40 or so) years ago I used to drink coffee all day at work. I didn't believe that I could be addicted to it and to prove it stopped all caffeine. Two days later I fell asleep at my desk in the afternoon. My staff all tip-toed around me while I slept with my head amongst the paperclips and papers. I woke up after two hours when my phone rang feeling very groggy and unwell. We've had decaff tea and coffee at home ever since. I do have a coffee when I'm out a few times a week. Don't know if it helped with the menopause, I've had relatively few problems, but I do know my anxiety levels rise after caffeine. Sorry, not much help.

Same. Nothing to do with menopause though, just for my general health.

My DH did, after realizing that it made his heart rate increase. He just drinks green tea now, one large mug in the morning.

I tend to go off coffee if I am unwell, the last time was when I had covid. I eased back into my 3 cups a day soon afterwards! I tend not to suffer any effects.

Not me I'm afraid, it's one of my few vices in life. But it really doesn't have much effect on me - I could have a double espresso after dinner and have no trouble at all going to sleep.

A consultant neurologist I saw a couple of years ago said coffee, dark chocolate and red wine in small quantities were all essential for good health.

Wow.... thank you again for all your replies,so interesting.

Blondiescot wow ! Drunk more! Thank you for replying... 😃

I drink milky (well, oatly) lattes perhaps 4 or 5 a day. probably the total amount of coffee is not too great, but no way will I give them up! My two hot limited caffeine comforting lattes in the morning are not up for debate...

There was a scientific medical programme on R4 that worked out that a modest shot of coffee helps the effect of paracetamol for pain relief.

grannydarkhair Fri 03-Mar-23 01:00:43

Wyllow3 Lots of painkillers available to buy otc contain caffeine as a constituent.

FannyCornforth Fri 03-Mar-23 03:08:43

Yes, the caffeine gets the painkillers into your system quickly and efficiently.
A very wise friend of mine 30 odd years ago told me that you should always take paracetamol with a cup of coffee.

I’ve never tried to cut out out anything (except not eating meat, but that wasn’t an effort)
Everything in moderation - including moderation smile

I did find when I was having hot flushes that I’d always get one after I’d had my morning coffee.
But I’m on HRT now and that’s pretty much stopped the flushes

Same as glammagran- I used to drink about 5 or 6 cups a day when I was working and got the palpitations. Maybe it was the social work?? Now I have 2 at the most but good brewed stuff, not instant. I just can't drink instant anymore, rather have tea. I reckon it is good for me, along with whole nut hazlenut choc from Aldi- nuts are good aren't they? Oh- and a red wine at night.

Hetty58 Fri 03-Mar-23 05:56:41

I can't think of any good reason to stop my two or three coffees a day. If we're not caffeine sensitive, I'm sure it's good for us.

BlueBalou Fri 03-Mar-23 06:12:57

I did switch to decaff when I was diagnosed with heart failure because I was getting palpitations especially at night.
Now, nearly 5 years on I have 2 ‘proper’ coffees in the morning and sometimes a cup of tea in the afternoon but otherwise stick to fruit juice with sparkling water.

I cut caffeineout for a while some years ago. Not just coffee, but cola drinks, which I never much liked but the cans were cnvenient for a packed lunch.

Within 48 hours I had a blistering headache that lasted three or four days, so I took the hnt nd kept off it, but keeping decaff outsid ethe house became difficult and, anyway I do not much like coffee and only drink one cup a day usually, so gradually I have stopped drinking decaff.

I drinkwater, tea, fruit cordials, fruit tea and Lift, a pwdered lemon tea. I have a big mug beside me as I write this.

LRavenscroft Fri 03-Mar-23 08:39:01

Yes, I cut out coffee because I have IBS so drink a decaff version if feeling robust on that day. Otherwise, now stick to herbal tea.

fiorentina51 Fri 03-Mar-23 09:05:01

I was drinking an awful lot of full strength coffee, probably 6 to 8 mugs a day. During the pandemic I was drinking even more. It occurred to me that I was addicted so thought I would go cold turkey.
I found a decaffeinated variety that I actually liked, cut down on my intake to 3 or 4 mugs, drinking water at other times.
For best part of 2 weeks I had headaches and muscle pain.
I was also more irritable than usual!
Eventually I felt much better and my sleep pattern improved.
I usually start the day with a shot of caffeine but after that it's usually decaff coffee or water...or gin...or wine. 😉

Wyllow3 Fri 03-Mar-23 09:11:52

For tums - Belvoir ginger cordial is wonderful. M n S do a good alternative.

Hurray! My three favourite things. Can’t stand the taste of tea, so have 1 cup of strong coffee in the morning and one decaf in the afternoon.

karmalady Fri 03-Mar-23 09:25:11

I have plenty of energy from first thing, so I get some jobs done after breakfast. Only then, at around 9am, do I enjoy my one and only coffee. Freshly ground by me, organic and fairtrade and sheer luxury

Coffee has a long half life so I never drink it after 11am. I do not like instant coffee of any sort
