I know that prices are rising at an astonishing rate but THIS took my breath away

I use this quite a lot around the house, up to a few months ago. It was a pound, then it went off the shelves for weeks and came back at £1.25, then disappeared again for weeks and has come back today at £2….🤷‍♀️
Food prices, council tax hikes, rents going up.how on earth are people going to manage?
Just as well, I enjoy my part-time job in a care home even at 70, because I could not afford to give it up now..

Prod prod ding was what you said the dentist did to you BlueBelle! I thought, like Shinamae, that it was a good way to put it.

Mouthwash (Colgate Plax) was £1.85 in Tesco during and after lockdown and then it went up to just over £2 and then shot up to £4. This week it was cheaper with Clubcard, so I'm planning to stock up.

Sorry Shinamae I had no idea what ‘prod prod ding’ meant but I ll take your word for it 😂

That’s a dreadful price to pay for decaf coffee livelylady I usually pay £4 for L’Or decaf at B and M but they haven’t had any in the last two weeks

Going back to my expensive cab perhaps I didn’t explain properly I don’t live in London or anywhere near a city I live in what is describe as a ‘disadvantaged area’ although I don’t see it as that and it was a mile and a half at most if someone further up said they paid £15 for a 6 mile trip it does make mine very expensive at £8 for 1 and a half miles

I didn’t realise that there’s 20% VAT on pet food and veterinary treatment. One of the charities is doing a petition asking fir it to be reduced in the current financial crisis. A lot of things don’t pay VAT at all.

It’s the Dogs Tryst that are calling for VAT on pet food and veterinary fees to be cancelled temporarily because pet owners are struggling so much at the moment.

Still reeling from cost of decaff coffee. Just under £10 in the Co-op. Back to cheap own brand stuff for a while and hope offers start soon.

I went to buy a pack of 4 yoghurts to discover the price was for one so I left it on the shelf.

There must be a lot of wastage because we are refusing or cannot afford to pay the extra cost.

henetha Sat 11-Mar-23 10:21:15

I bought a rose bush in the pound shop yesterday and it was £2.

LadyGracie Sat 11-Mar-23 10:19:34

My yoghurt has gone up 50p in a week.

I’m 74 and I don’t know what soda crystals are for. Sorry.

Shinamae Sat 11-Mar-23 09:34:22

Have never bought soda crystals though remember Gran using it to clear drains?
My washing is clean using washing powder.😃
It’s always strange how prices hike up, then go down or products just vanish completely.

It’s not really for the washing, it’s to help maintain the health of the washing machine..🤓

Our local council has increased the charge for emptying a garden waste bin from £42 per year to £55 per year. Therefore lots of people are saying they won't pay it, they will burn it, and some will just quietly dump it of course. I think rubbish disposal and the local tip should always be free otherwise the council only has to go round collecting the excessive quantities of fly tipping which probably costs more.

Ours is going up quite substantially as well, because I only have it emptied about three or four times a year. I am not going to bother
It always used to be included in the council tax and as you say I think this will lead to a lot of fly tipping and then it will cost the council a lot more to go round picking it all up..🤷‍♀️

Grannynannywanny Sat 11-Mar-23 09:09:15

Yes it’s all relative. From what I’ve read the state pension is considerably higher in Australia for those who qualify. It’s currently £185.15 per week here which is around 338 Australian dollars. Petrol in the UK is almost 3 dollars per litre .

Our prices are much, much higher than those you mentioned, it’s all relative. I think our petrol is probably still cheaper though.About $1. 90 per litre this week, it varies.

Bigred18 Sat 11-Mar-23 07:51:28

Try living in Australia, your prices seem reasonable to me! I'll see for myself in a couple of weeks when I undertake that looooong journey.

I buy Catsan for my cats litter tray. Last week it was £7. When I went to get it this week, it was £9!!!!
I really feel there is profiteering going on and greed taking over.

Casdon Fri 10-Mar-23 21:25:48

The run on soda crystals may be because of the time of year, I usually buy a few packs in March because I use them to clean the patio slabs. It is a big rise in price, but even at £2 it’s much cheaper than using proprietary patio cleaner.

Hetty58 Fri 10-Mar-23 21:19:28

They are among the things I'd buy online - along with cat food, bicarbonate of soda, diatomaceous earth, loo roll etc. - about once a year. I have a really good search around for the best quality and cheapest prices. OK - I'm a fanatical bargain hunter.

For instance, the best value sunflower hearts for the birdssadhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000PWHSQM?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) is a baker's sack full. I'd never pay £2 for a tiny bag at the pet shop - just can't do it.

Still, the Tesco soda is expensive at £2, they're £1.70 from Sainsburys, Ocado, and Amazon, £1.45 from the Co-op - and still £1.50 in the local corner shop. Somebody is enjoying a big fat, profit!

fancythat Fri 10-Mar-23 19:50:10

I have been wondering why my food cupboard is looking emptier than usual.
I now realise it is because I keep baulking at the prices. We can afford to pay the extra prices for the time being. But who can still afford them if they keep up going up at the rate they have been going?

So I keep coming back from a store with only half the things on my list, if I am not in a place that has the cheaper stuff.

For the time being I am going through my freezer. And looking at things at the back of the cupboard.

Cat food has cereal in it, with cereal prices rising, partly due to the Ukrainian war and partly heatwaves in producing countries. Plus labour cost and fuel rises in factories most foods with a cereal content have risen.

Shinamae Fri 10-Mar-23 19:15:21

Caramme

Not only has cat food gone up as you say but the Whiskas wet food sachets have gone from 100gms down to 85gms, which makes the increase even greater.
I do wonder how many of these price increases are genuinely proportional to the increased costs and how many manufacturers, suppliers, etc are simply taking the opportunity to boost their profits.

I think it’s called profiteering, and I totally agree with you, you..🤓
