Hearing Steven Gerrard on the TV tonight (build up to the England game, which OH is currently watching.)

I just love a Scouse accent. Being Inner London born and bred, I have a typical Cockney accent (I was born in the City of London district within the sound of Bow Bells) but I think that is a boring sound. The Scouse accent just seems to sing!

What accent, apart from your own, appeals to you most?

I dont particularly like any but on tv would prefer it if they spoke the 'BBC' 'Plummy English' accent that they used to in the first days of tv/radio as i'm fed up of actors/presenters mumbling or not speaking clearly enough, in accents you cant fathom.🤨

I love the lilting of a Welsh accent. I just find it so musical.

Oh, and north eastern incl. Newcastle. I like Sara Davies' accent.
Always sounds friendly and quite reassuring.

Newcastle, Scouse, some Irish but not all.

Definitely Geordie, Cumbrian, Scandinavian languages and Lancashire dialect, which is now dying out. I think I must have Viking DNA! 😂

Scottish and Welsh in particular. Any voice with a slight foreign accent is sort of sexy.

I love all accents as they are so defining of people's roots and really interesting, especially so many different ones just within the UK itself.
One of our church readers has a beautiful, gentle West Indian accent, just lovely. She could even make a car manual sound soothing!

I'm from Yorkshire , with the corresponding accent, but I adore Cockney / regional London and Southern accents .

Oh strong Irish! Can listen to it for hours

I’m a Geordie myself but I love Scottish (outlander Jamie) lol Irish also a northern accent

I love all the British accents but the one I find it longer to get tuned into is a Somerset accent.
As a child, I used to have to act as translator for an uncle who came to visit from NW Cumberland. I couldn't understand why the bus conductor didn't understand him.
What I harte is dropping of H and also missing out T eg. sco'ish
and when did TH become F as in Fir'y Free

Granless Sun 26-Mar-23 12:57:46

What about Lancashire - it’s a lovely warm accent.

I love a West Country accent like Bristol or Somerset. Anywhere around there is so warm and friendly sounding. I always feel 'welcome' there.

Living in the North now, I have to say my birthplace and childhood accent of Cornish is my favourite. Sad that many old phrases and words are disappearing, my 97 year old Mum still uses them. It is a gentle accent that I will forever hold in my heart.

I like the Geordie accent, Southern Irish, Birmingham and Scottish but like them to be soft and not too strong.

Saggi Sun 26-Mar-23 14:56:40

North London…in fact …my own.

Ziplok Sun 26-Mar-23 15:03:46

I tend to like the softer, more lilting accents, for eg, those from Shetland, North Yorkshire.
As someone has already said, accents vary widely, even within regions. My own Yorkshire accent differs considerably from some one from The Dales, Barnsley or Leeds, for example.

sharon103 Sun 26-Mar-23 15:09:38

I love the Barnsley accent spoken in '24 hours in A&E' on the tele.
I like the west country accent too.
