Stupid habit!

Anyone remember those really big and long legged spiders about 2-4 years ago? I remember a lot of people posting pictures and articles in the papers. Well, I had 2 occasions where 2 were in the bedroom, and the bathroom, mainly the bathroom. There were other days I had these too. One dark morning in using the loo roll, something dark flung into the bath, there were 2 of these large spiders that had fell out of the roll. It scared me so much but I had to kill them, but ever since every morning without fail I always check inside the loo roll is free of spiders. How they got in there, must have thought it was a very warm & dark space, and to maté maybe. And after seeing a small spider crawl out from under my pillow, I turn these over every night on going to bed. 🕷️
Anyone else with stupid habits?

I don’t touch spiders here because a lot are poisonous but lately we haven’t had many. We used to see a lot of red backs and white tails but I haven’t seen one in years, thank goodness.

I’m not afraid of spiders or mice and had the job of catching them in my home last year while my husband was yelling “ there’s a mouse , there’s a mouse”…. he’s never been my knight in shining armour!! I went and bought a few humane mouse traps and within a few days had caught six little field mice ….let them all go …in a field! They liked the peanut butter I’d stuffed in the traps. Who knew?!
Spiders I just pick up and put out the window …. but not if they’re house spiders….that would kill them. Live and let live.

AskAlice

I usually pick them up very carefully in my hand and cup the other one over it before putting them out. I'm not frightened of them at all. Now dentists...I'm terrified of them!!

My aunt May would pick up the largest spider at didn’t bother at all, but put a worm near her. She would go berserk…

I don’t mind spiders . I’m the spider remover in my house . A piece of card and a glass , job done . My daughter and my sister hates spiders so I’ve had loads of practice.

As one who is truly terrified of spiders I can’t get close enough to catch them in our bug catchers that are just like yours Calli but luckily DH will. Anything else I can and do catch. I’ve been cleaning out the shed on our allotment today and been on high alert!

Glass over, card under and out in the garden. Such useful beasties. In our house they are called 'Fred'.

I was woken up one night by a spider running over my face. I leapt out of bed, I don’t know why I shook my arms but I did and a large spider came flying out of one of the sleeves of my nighty. I never found it. !!!

Have a cup and bit of paper at the ready to catch and release spiders and moths. Also mason bees which tumble down my chimney in spring. Don’t want to kill.

One summer I was dead heading a tall climbing rose and felt something prickly go down my v neck t-shirt. I thought it was probably a bit of dried leaf. But when I got undressed that night I had a 50p size red mark on one boob that felt sore. The next morning I could clearly see two holes at the centre. I don't know where the 🕷️ went to. It wasn't in my bra! My lesson learned -wear high necked tops next time!

Not checking before posting is my stupid habit.

Lilyflower Mon 03-Apr-23 14:10:31

Arachnophobe, sorry!

Lilyflower Mon 03-Apr-23 14:09:21

I am an arachnaphobe but I get the male species in my life to relocate them over the road on the village green.

Spiders don't bother me, they catch the flies which plague us in summer. My phobia is frogs, I know its completely irrational but can't get over it. I think I 'learnt' it from my mother.

Killing spiders is bad luck…..for them!

missdeke Mon 03-Apr-23 12:42:46

I don't like spiders and if they decide to enter my house they take their chances. I have a cat who can usually get them before I come along with my spider catcher. If I get them first then they are thrown outside.

I always shake my trainers. I stayed at my daughters in Oz where all shoes were kept in the garage. I felt something move in my trainer and a huge cockroach fell out!]shock

Callistemon21

Please don't kill spiders intentionally.

I've got one of these:

It's useful for catching bees which venture inside too.

I have one of these. They’re really good. I never kill spiders just catch them in this to put them outside.

annodomini Mon 03-Apr-23 11:37:19

I was brought up to believe that it was bad luck to kill a spider and I never (knowingly) have. I'm sure they find us far more scary than we find them.

Rileysnana Mon 03-Apr-23 11:09:58

I too dislike spiders. I shake my shoes upside down before I put them on incase there's anything in there.

Blondiescot Sun 02-Apr-23 19:40:10

I know they do, but can't stand them!

Callistemon21 Sun 02-Apr-23 16:03:55

Blondiescot

Nope, they're treated like any other home invader in this house (apart from bees - I do make an effort to catch them and put them outside)!

Spiders catch flies and other nasties.

Jaxjacky Sun 02-Apr-23 15:20:44

False widow spiders bite in the UK, very rarely cause a problem.
I check all pots in the greenhouse for slugs before handling, slugs make me feel yuck.

Preferably before it bites!!
