A comment on another thread about dunking a Nice biscuit got me thinking.
I (to my shame) have always dunked. I did remember not to when my D’s took me to the Ritz for a landmark birthday but in everyday life, give me a cuppa and give me a biscuit and I’m anybody’s.
But which biscuit is best for dunking? Does it depend on the beverage?
Tea biscuits are clearly streets ahead for tea, but ginger nuts run them close.
Hobnobs too, although they can be fragile, therefore risky.
hmmhmm
Or have you raised your hands in horror at this breach of etiquette? grin

I love to dunk. Only at home or with people I know well though.

denbylover Wed 05-Apr-23 07:49:15

Ginger nuts, but only at home.

BlueBelle Wed 05-Apr-23 07:54:54

I ve always dunked, always will
Hobnobs, digestive, are probably my best but any are fine by me even chocolate ones just don’t dunk them for many seconds

I am a dyed in the wool dunker. Ginger biscuits stand up best, but I’m partial to digestives which occasionally break in half leaving you having to make another drink!

I don't dunk. Nothing to do with etiquette it's just that I don't like soggy textures. Biscuits should be as crisp as possible for me.

I've never really "got" dunking and I'm not a great lover of biscuits. But surely the whole pleasure of a biscuit is that it's crisp and crunchy? Each to their own, of course, but why would you want to change that crispness into a squishy mush?

Redhead56 Wed 05-Apr-23 08:35:49

Ginger nuts are wasted on dunking they are too good! As are short bread especially homemade ones digestives are good for dunking they have the right texture.

I used to be a dunker, but over many years now I have been trying to eat healthily, and I found that when dunking I was eating far more biscuits. Now I enjoy the crunch and I nibble!!!

Susan56 Wed 05-Apr-23 08:38:54

I’m with Aveline.Soggy textures make me 🤮

DH however is a dunker. He says he will dunk any biscuit but shortbread would be his number one!

Same here Aveline and I don't like crumbs in my coffee either.

I'm a serial dunker, I've dunked them all, except chocolate.
GD when she's here, always asks for a tea biscuit when I have my afternoon tea

DanniRae Wed 05-Apr-23 08:59:51

I used to dunk a lot more than I do now. I think rich tea are the best but it has to be a speedy dunk or it will be a disaster shock

My mother used to dunk and here’s a funny story. When I was young she cleaned one morning a week for an older woman who thought she was upper class. Mum was allowed a cup of coffee and a biscuit mid morning. One time, making sure the “old kite” wasn’t around mum dunked her biscuit. Later the “old kite” asked “Have you got false teeth Mrs. H?”
Mystified mum replied “yes”. The “old kite” then said “ Only I saw you dip your biscuit in your drink.”
Mum then knew she had been spied on and could never quite work out where the “old kite” had been hiding, but she never trusted her again.

Never.
Soggy crumbs in my tea. Yuk.
I do break biscuits into small bits though rather than taking a bite out of the whole, which I didn't realise I did until someone said, oh my granny used to do just what you are doing, and then we went on to have an in-depth discussion about dunking!

Bridie22 Wed 05-Apr-23 09:04:32

I'm a dunker! and not ashamed to admit it 🤣

Baggs Wed 05-Apr-23 09:07:10

It depends on the biscuit. My home-made ginger biscuits don't need to be dunked when they are fresh but they harden over a few days and then they do 🍪

Grannybags Wed 05-Apr-23 09:09:11

I only dunk in tea. I don't have sugar in my tea so only plain biscuits like Rich Tea or Digestive otherwise the tea gets too sweet.

nadateturbe Wed 05-Apr-23 09:10:21

I love Rich Tea dunked in my glass of milk.

EkwaNimitee Wed 05-Apr-23 09:11:17

I dunk shamelessly, I don't give a fig about etiquette, I'd do it anywhere! It's always in public anyway as I don't harbour biscuits at home. Always in coffee as I don't drink tea and it's generally a ginger biscuit. Dunking time is critical, I don't like soggy but I do like soft and I don't want to challenge my expensive dentistry by biting into a hard biscuit.
I've heard there's a north-south divide on this issue...it's OK practice with northerners but not southerners but don't know if that's true.

Shinamae Wed 05-Apr-23 09:14:06

Never have,never will….🙃

Kim19 Wed 05-Apr-23 09:15:53

Hands in horror for me (since you ask!).

Baggs Wed 05-Apr-23 09:17:54

Two things:

1 On the rare occasions when I eat Rich Tea biscuits I butter them, stick them together and don't dunk.

2 Using swipe typing on my iphone produces dunk when I'm trying to write dunnock.

JackyB Wed 05-Apr-23 09:19:32

I agree with those who break their biscuits and dunk half. Definitely wouldn't contaminate my team with chocolate or dunk anything with a filling though.

Most dunkable: digestives, nice, rich tea and possibly even sponge fingers.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 05-Apr-23 09:20:53

Oh, yuk - no way!
