A comment on another thread about dunking a Nice biscuit got me thinking.
I (to my shame) have always dunked. I did remember not to when my D’s took me to the Ritz for a landmark birthday but in everyday life, give me a cuppa and give me a biscuit and I’m anybody’s.
But which biscuit is best for dunking? Does it depend on the beverage?
Tea biscuits are clearly streets ahead for tea, but ginger nuts run them close.
Hobnobs too, although they can be fragile, therefore risky.
hmmhmm
Or have you raised your hands in horror at this breach of etiquette? grin

Have never understood dunking. Soggy biscuits which then fall into your drink before you can get it up to your mouth. Yak!

Always dunk a biscuit, especially custard creams and digestive. But tbh most of mine get dipped in the tea or coffee.
No matter where, I just don’t care 😂😂

I was never a dunker, except for ginger nuts, but I must confess that I have recently started to dunk all biscuits. DH on the other hand has always been a dunker.

Yes, an unashamed dunker, both for preference and now to help protect my failing gnashers.

Rich tea, yes, ginger biscuits no, I love the biscuit as it is.

Purplepoppies Sat 08-Apr-23 11:38:06

Yes I do (although definitely shouldn't 🤫)
I even occasionally dunk buttered toast in tea 😊
Any biscuit that I like is fair game and larger biscuits (digestives & similar) are broken in half first, less chance of them breaking in the cup.

Only at home and in private! Chocolate biscuits are the best!

I never drink tea, usually fresh coffee. Ginger biscuits were made for dunking , in my view. But it is an art. You get to know that precise time when it is just right and well before it might break. My mother would not allow such behaviour and so my version was to bite a ginger biscuit and then take some coffee, so got around it that way!! Of course , I do as I please these days but still feel slightly defiant as I sit here and dunk the ginger biscuit! could never try with chocolate biscuits though! Each to their own

Here , hear Aveline …I think biscuits should be crisp ….but I also don’t like soggy cereal… so very little milk!

Norah Sat 08-Apr-23 12:25:06

No.

OMG NEVER! 😲
As a very young child, I remember visiting my gran and my mum dunked her biscuit in her cup of tea, my gran gasped in horror, and told us that dunking was extremely impolite and should never be done, especially not in company.
This has stayed with me for over 50yrs, and I've never dunked, that's to say that I may have done it before being told it was rude, I can't remember, but I've definitely not done it since, and seeing other people dunk gives me the ick 🤮
One caveat though... bread/toast in soup is different, that's allowed 🙂

I would only do it in the privacy of my own home but I only really buy biscuits for the dog

Dianehillbilly1957 Sat 08-Apr-23 12:40:17

I'm a great Dunker! A biscuit isn't a biscuit unless it's been dunked!

Tanjamaltija Sat 08-Apr-23 12:40:23

Later the “old kite” asked “Have you got false teeth Mrs. H?”
Mystified mum replied “yes”. The “old kite” then said “ Only I saw you dip your biscuit in your drink.”

So, we are only allowed to dunk if we have falsies? Really?

Hate soggy textures so would never dunk biscuits, but chocolate dunked in coffee - that’s a treat!

ParlorGames Sat 08-Apr-23 12:45:09

Bourbons every time!

Ginger nuts are definitely the best for dunking in tea.

It's been a long time now but do you remember when McVities ginger nuts were harder and denser than they are now? That would be when I was a teenager so well over 50 years now since they changed the recipe to something lighter and more crumbly. They were absolutely the best for dunking. Maybe the lighter version went down better with testing panels but I never was one to run with the flock.

Saw a card in a shop recently which said ' I swear to Drunk I'm not God' (made me laugh!). I dont dunk.

Diggingdoris Sat 08-Apr-23 13:46:11

I have always dunked and my gran told me that even Queen Elizabeth was a known dunker! So if it was good enough for her........!

Chocolate chip cookies dunked in coffee for me😋The chocolate chips get all melty and gooey and delicious.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 08-Apr-23 14:18:57

Yes, at home I do dunk digestive biscuits and other hard ones.

I would only do so in public in France, where dunking a croissant in your breakfast coffee is considered all right, or in Spain if others in the room were doing so. Never in any country where it is considered bad manners, which is, as far as I know most of Europe and the UK.

Pudding123 Sat 08-Apr-23 14:25:30
