Going to watch the Coronation procession

I am travelling to London to watch the procession, hopefully from the Mall. Has anyone any hints? No 1 question is, will there be extra loos set up in St James Park? Are there likely to be food sellers? I shall arrive (by overnight bus) at 6am, hopefully that will be early enough to get a decent view.
I realise there is a wide range of opinions about the coronation. I wish the King and Queen well and want to be there to see the once in a lifetime spectacle.

Burmese (1962–1990): a black Police Service Horse (PSH) mare, was given to Queen Elizabeth II by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and ridden by the Queen for Trooping the Colour for 18 consecutive years, from 1969 to 1986.

P.S.

Surely she wasn’t riding Burmese back in 1953 Jaberwock?

He must have been quite young then, as she was riding him in the Trooping The Colour when shots were fired, that must have been early 80’s.

If wrong, I stand corrected.

I still have my Coronation crown Jaberwock

😇

The Queen of Tonga won many 💕

I was 5 at the last coronation and remember running in a street race, then It rained.
Despite living within a 40 minute train ride I have never been up to London for any occasion other than to see the flowers fir Diana which was a spur of the moment decision.
If I am home will probably watch some of it otherwise it will be all over the extended news later.

I can never understand people waiting hours outside in uncertain weather. You can see far more on TV from the comfort of your own home - including stopping the bradcast while you go to the loo in comfort.

Oh yes, The Queen of Tonga. Fantastic lady who got an enormous cheer.

We'll be watching the Coronation. I remember watching the Queen's coronation which I thought - even as an almost 5 years - was very special. Whether it is really necessary to have a coronation or not is another matter!

I’d say the big screens would be the best bet, as you’d get atmosphere without waiting for ages for the very short and probably restricted view of proceedings.

I remember my step grandfather giving me a Crown piece (5/-). It was in a plastic case and had Britannia on one side and the Queen riding her horse Burmese on the other. I had this for years but it somehow went missing. I still kick myself for being so careless. I had a coronation coach too with the Queen and P.P inside with 4? 6? horses drawing it. Coronation mugs, pencils tea towels and heaven knows what were everywhere!

Second Coronation for me as well. It was great watching it on b/w tv 9”at a friend’s house. My mother told me not to boast that I had seen it on tv!!!! They made a full length colour film which we were taken to see from school. We were given Coronation mugs (dh still has his) and had a party in the flats we lived in. The Queen toured the streets of the U.K. waving at us while the dust carts cleaning the street beforehand were cheered as if they were royalty. We then had a film of her tour of the Commonwealth. We were sooo proud of our lovely young Queen as she met the far less attractive and older leaders of those countries. However, the favourite of the Coronation visitors was the Queen of Tonga, lovely smile and full of joy. She was our favourite on the tour.

I was six and watched the coronation at Hyde park corner under a policeman’s cape right in the front - it bucketed.
We travelled up from Cornwall.

This one - I shall watch from my sitting room.

I also was 10 and can remember watching on a 12 inch black and white TV with the room full of neighbours. We had several street parties as we lived in a long avanue with several connecting streets where cousins lived. So we attended about 3. I can also remember winning a prize in school for a "coronation scrap book". My grandmother was a strong royalist and gave me some wonderful magazines to cut up.

Take plenty of loose change for the loo plus lots of sandwiches and snacks. I would take a mixture of cards and cash to buy food and supplies if needed. Dont forget comfy and suitable clothes in case it rains - the weather in May can still be very unpredictable.

Well, I'm a Charles and Camilla fan, as are all my family, so wherever we are we shall be wishing them well. I was 10 at the last Coronation, my stepfather was a radio ham and had built our small black and white TV in his workshop in 1951. It worked well and we (my Granny, Uncles, aunt two very small cousins) gathered round for this great event. Later that day we went to the bun throwing and queued for a slice of beef which was being roasted whole in the market place. All in all, despite the weather a good time was had by all

I shall be watching from home. My mum and dad had seats on the route for the 1953 Coronation and mum said the wait between them going to the Abbey and coming back was the longest few hours of her life. Also glad to hear its a more mixed congregation this time round.

I'm with Grandma70s. Not much bothered about the new King but enjoy watching these occasions on TV. The commentary, the outfits the speculation etc. The music should be really something I've gathered.
Very pleased to hear about all the worthy charity people invited. The people I know if who have the BEM really deserve to be treated.

As at the last Coronation I, with DH will be watching it on TV. D.Gd lives in Windsor, and together with DD and her family will be out in the crowds. Fingers crossed the weather is fine, unlike last time when it was horrible, cold and wet, in June!!!

My son lives very close to Windsor, but I think he’ll probably watch the tv coverage rather than brave the crowds (if any).

Second coronation in a lifetime for me. I was 13 at the last one, watched it on a neighbour’s tiny black and white tv. I think there was a colour film at the cinema later.

This time I shall watch every moment on a rather better TV set. I love these state occasions, though I have no particular affection for Charles, and still less for his wife.

Will people camp out? The view on TV is so much better!

Thank you for all the replies and encouragement. It will be a long day from Cornwall and back. Small backpack with water and snacks, sandwiches, fruit etc. I have a folding stick seat to perch on and hope to sleep on the bus both ways. The TV at home will be set to record so I'll spend most of the Sunday watching.

Don't forget your St. Piran's flag!
Have a lovely time!

ExDancer Sat 08-Apr-23 09:43:17

I agree, I think the people who have camped overnight for two or more nights will already have bagged the best places at the front.
All the same it'll be a wonderful day out for you. How far are you travelling?

Humbertbear Sat 08-Apr-23 09:31:55

I’m sorry but I don’t think you will see very much if you are planning to get to the Mall on the day of the Coronation. I suspect people will be camped out for days. On these occasions the tv reporters usually interview people who have been there for a long time.

Sadly can't go up so we are going to have a bit of a gathering here.
Both my kids want to come here with my crazy mates.
We will dress up all wear Tiaras, or Hats, drink Fizz, eat cakes and sandwiches, hope the weather is good so the little children can go into the garden.

We have put off a theatre night for it. I won’t be answering the phone but then I never do unless it flashes up with the name of the caller. Gradually the pain in the backside callers trying to sell stuff or get money are reducing. Drastic but worth it.
