Not My King

I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

Found out yesterday the crowning bit's on Monday, not Saturday, so need to re-arrange long made plans that involve staunch royalists who'll be glued to giant telly watching it all. I can't be bothered with any of it, another waste of money.

Is that true? I have just looked online and could find no reference to it. Have I missed something?

Edith81 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:48:56

Gramerreto how condescending of you to be kind to us people who would watch the Coronation because we have such boring lives. Is that your take on everything you’re not interested in?

Do people actually think the King is more important and affects the way the country is run, more than a Prime Minister?

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:39:37

Charles 111 seems an inoffensive front person for the nation and much to be preferred to our recent Prime Ministers.

It's like a contagious meme. Here it is again.

All our PMs actually fronted the country. They were the ones turning up at meetings that mattered. Other people could stand for election, not just ex-PMs. Rather than somebody inoffensive I'd want somebody effective.

I’m sad to read the anti words here.
This is a decent country (UK) Some of these ‘anti’ contributors maybe think what it would be like without the monarchy. We’d have been led with King equivalent- Tony Blair and even Boris. Wow that would have been the end!!! I know the monarchy is not voted in and for that we have continually. Just can’t imagine my country without the monarchy.

Tony Blair and Boris Johnson did actually lead the country.

And guess what - they don't do it any more.

Because we have the choice. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oddly enough, I do think what it would be like to have an elected Head of State, and unlike people who are fond of saying what a decent country we live in and then suggesting otherwise, I do think we could come up with a system that ensured decent, effective, accountable leadership.

Trapped at home in my village, with no car and bus services cancelled, I can get an idea of what is going on from TV news digests. Charles 111 seems an inoffensive front person for the nation and much to be preferred to our recent Prime Ministers. Most of the day, I shall be reading, probably my favourite historical novels, and reflecting on the long journey from absolute to constitutional monarchs around the world. Charles 1 was a dangerously stubborn extremist and Charles 11 not much of an example to follow. Better a powerless monarch than a populist tyrant or an uneducated President.

Getting up early and going off for a very long walk, take advantage of hopefully no traffic on the road. Couldn't bear to watch it, Queen Camilla indeed!

Nannapat1 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:22:38

Totally agree with you Lovelady!

King Charles will be a great king. We’re fortunate to have him. We’re having a street party and the road will be closed.
It’s a positive when all our neighbours will get together. Usually, sadly they ignore each other.
This will be a day of celebration and merriment.

The coverage of the church visit this weekend included:

Prince Louis wore a tie!
They're all in blue.
The Princess of Wales had a manicure.

Obsessing with celebrity, definitely.

Anniebach Tue 11-Apr-23 11:48:56

I am not obsessed with celebrity . The thought of yet another election ? No thank you

Witzend Tue 11-Apr-23 11:24:10

Grammaretto

Biglouis you say cut down to size as in Scandinavia but when a family visit to Denmark coincided with a royal christening (I think) wherever we went everyone was glued to their TV screens.

We are strange, imo, the way, as a nation, we obsess with celebrity

As regards ‘obsessing with celebrity’, please speak for yourself!

I’m on the fence about monarchy. I think Andrew and H&M have brought them into disrepute. On the other hand and elected second chamber would be good. One thing I like is the position of Head of State is at least stable. I won’t be watching all the proceedings but will dip in and out. I like the historical link it brings .

I'm not on the fence but were the Royal Family to say they abdicated in toto I wouldn't blame them in the slightest!

I'm a pragmatic Royalist as the Monarchy does not have the power it had in centuries past, Royal Assent is a formality and I like ceremonial traditions.

Perhaps the Church in England should be disestablished.

And I definitely believe we should have an elected Upper Chamber. I wouldn't say that the aristocracy should be abolished but that they should not have an automatic right to become a member of an Upper Chamber without election. Neither should an outgoing Prime Minister have the right to grant peerages as it is cronyism.

Orders of Merit or some kind to honour those who have contributed to society are an excellent idea .

^They could after all all have entered the church quietly, without all the fuss. You know like ordinary people do^

The congregation, ordinary people and all, enter by the main door; should the royal family creep in through a side entrance?
This will no doubt astonish you; it is actually the public, probably including a few ordinary people, who wait as the family enter and exit because, unbelievably, they enjoy seeing the royal family.

Actually it is rather odd as the RF exit through the side entrance and Camilla seems to be leaving before the service finishes. You can hear the Lord's Prayer in the background.

Very few people there a few claps for Charles

Slimmed down monarchy? Should Charles banish nieces, nephews, cousins from family gatherings?

And criticism of them entering a church together , should they arrive at 15 minute intervals ?

Did you see them arriving in limos? Are they all staying for the weekend?

No, I have no idea either. Perhaps they came in their own vehicles, and went home after the service. Maybe they went back to Charles’ for lunch, as many families did yesterday.

So what? Makes not a scrap of difference to you or me.

Well it does if Charles is paying for it all. Not really a slimmed down monarchy as has been said. They could after all all have entered the church quietly, without all the fuss. You know like ordinary people do. It is all part of showing you how special they all are. Even Andrew, carefully exiting last, sandwiched between Edward and Anne's husband.

biglouis Mon 10-Apr-23 12:50:26

I feel strongly that people who dont support royalty or the coronation should be able to protest peacefully and express their views without fear of getting arrested. Some of the examples of people being arrested for just calling out or holding up a placard are unacceptable in a domocratic society. Throwing things or violent behaviour is a different matter because someone could be injured.

I am thoroughly looking forward to the Coronation 👍.

DH and I have asked 3 friends round, who would have been on their own, to watch the ceremony and then we will have a sandwich lunch and trifle. One friend is baking a cake the 97 year old is bringing the booze and a surprise from the third one.

Today I have bought an M and S tin of shortbread. The container is purple with the words KING Charles III on the front. We will have that with morning coffee.

DH will put up the bunting, I have a royal table cloth from the Jubilee, royal napkins and plates.

It will be a day of celebration in our house 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥂🥂🥂🍾🍾🍹🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

just seen then going to church earlier.. no sign of slimming down the monarchy... and the Tindalls, well!

But it’s the family members going to church on Easter Day. Nothing to do with ‘slimming down’.

The Tindalls are part of that family, Zara being the King’s niece, so why shouldn’t they be there?

Quite.

Perhaps all family members should be banished from the Kingdom, never to be seen in public 😁

Just wondering if they all pay for their own limos etc. And who foots the bill for the weekend? Nice little jolly for them all I suppose.
Is going to church being a "working Royal"? I'm never sure exactly what that involves.
