I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

And the excess lavishness.

Riverwalk Sun 09-Apr-23 11:48:43

For those who are monarchists and practising Christians do you have any conflicting emotions on the coronation ceremony itself?

Two adulterers are being 'anointed in holy oil' specially brought from Jerusalem, crowned in a solemn ceremony in the highest church in the land by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Blondiescot Sun 09-Apr-23 11:34:04

Exactly. Priorities. In a country where children are going to school hungry, it just seems well over the top.

Most people complaining about the cost of the coronation are probably not so literal as that.

My view is we live in a country that says it can't afford to pay care workers properly but we think its lovely to pay £100million for a party and £8m for pictures of an old chap in a uniform, because you know, "tradition".

Our priorities need looking at.

People complaining abut the cost of the coronation all seem to assume that if the money wasn't spent on the coronation it would be spent on relieving poverty and aiding the sick.

What is the evidence this would happen. I mean the money is coming from a variety of different sources and even between ministries, would the ministry of transport give the money it would otherwise have spent on traffic control for the coronation to local authroities to fill in potholes or would it be used to extend a motorway somewhere.

What is the evdnce that the money not spent would then be well spent?

Apparently the Coronation will cost around 100 million, meanwhile in the same breath the Government slash 21 million from the Care budget!

Link to the Danish royal twins christening

Grammaretto Sun 09-Apr-23 10:13:41

Biglouis you say cut down to size as in Scandinavia but when a family visit to Denmark coincided with a royal christening (I think) wherever we went everyone was glued to their TV screens.

We are strange, imo, the way, as a nation, we obsess with celebrity

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 10:10:36

Still tin earred though.
Charles should be more mindful of his ‘subjects’

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 10:09:27

True.

Well, we can’t afford to pay doctors or nurses, create decent sewage systems or shore up crumbling services but somehow we cabin afford lavish royal ceremonies. This country has its priorities all wrong,

Exactly

Ear of tin, neck of brass

(I feel a poem coming on…)

Yes, we can afford all that.

It's the Government at fault there, not the King.

a rather unattractive elderly grumpy man

As opposed to a young, pretty Queen, as his mother was, back in 1953.

I actually think Charles looks the best he ever has done. In his youth he looked gauche, gawky, a young man in his 20’s but dressed as though in his 50’s.

With his grey/white hair and a still trim figure, I think he looks quite dashing and dapper nowadays. And confidence he never had when young.

And before anyone says, yes I know he can afford the best tailor, but so can many other wealthy people who haven’t worn as well as Charles.

Rowantree Sun 09-Apr-23 07:32:54

vegansrock et al: yes, well said, perfectly put.

Rowantree Sun 09-Apr-23 07:31:38

Our street is having a party. We will escape to stay with DD in Norwich for the duration. The whole royalist shebang nauseates me. I can't understand why people kowtow to this overpriced shite.

J52 Sun 09-Apr-23 07:29:29

Well said Vegansrock. Couldn’t put it better myself.

If you compare how much is spent on the monarchy , the U.K. spends way more than any other European country with a royal family, They don’t even have coronations, What’s the point? I can just about see the point of weddings or funerals ( but they are unnecessarily lavish), but coronations - what are they ? A religious service of plonking a jewelled hat on a couple of privileged people. It could easily be done in private if it’s deemed essential, which it isn’t.

Goodbyetoallthat Sun 09-Apr-23 00:36:38

I will be watching as my SIL is a member of one of the choirs singing at the Coronation. Just hoping he isn’t stuck behind a pillar or standing behind someone very tall wearing a large hat !

biglouis Sat 08-Apr-23 23:33:54

Im not a great royalist but not republican either. On one hand I resent the expense but on the other it is a great historical event. I do remember the last coronation. I was 10 at the time.

I would very much like to see the monarchy cut down to size as in Sweden, Denmark and similar countries. There are too many hangers of and why do they need so many palaces and mansions?

LadyGracie Sat 08-Apr-23 23:22:14

I'll be watching, on Sky News hopefully, I can't stand the simpering BBC announcers.

Kate1949 Sat 08-Apr-23 22:53:58

I couldn't be less interested.

Ziplok Sat 08-Apr-23 22:46:33

Granmaretto - “dull lives” ? Ha, you’ve really no idea how many of us lead our lives, so don’t be so presumptuous 😂😂😂😂.

Ziplok Sat 08-Apr-23 22:39:56

Well, I’ll be watching some of it on tv but we also plan to have an afternoon tea (in the garden, weather permitting) and then, we’ll just wait and see 😁🎉.

nadateturbe Sat 08-Apr-23 22:34:04

Franbern Really is time that all these ridiculous titles, ermine, dressing up, and touching the forelock, became a thing for history.

I totally agree but I will watch out of historical interest.
