Not My King

I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

I thought that the title was chosen to reinforce the fact that the OP wanted to give a space to everyone who doesn't want to join in the King Charlie Jamboree and to avoid us getting into the existing thread celebrating sausage rolls and plastic tiaras, and upsetting the monarchists.

A very sensible choice, I thought.

If OP’s intention had genuinely been a thread in which GNetters were invited to share their plans for the Coronation Day, why entitle it Not My King ?
It seems unnecessarily contentious and designed to provoke the expression of yet more “Not My King” sentiments.
I thought “Oh here we go again. Can I honestly face 4 more weeks of this? “

*Anniebach*, I thought those comments were very harsh. I'm not a fan of the Royal Family in the least, but if others want to watch it, go to London to see it or hold parties, that's up to them. They might consider that I have a very dull life...

I second that Blondiescot.

I don't believe it computes that everyone who's a Monarchist is a forelock-tugging subservient leading a dull life. We have a monarchy, one day it will be history, at the moment it's part of our 'culture' I suppose, and the nation's 'identity'.

As a latent Republican, I shall still watch the 'highlights' for the historical value.

... and I do lead a very dull-life actually, but wouldn't assume that others do simply because they think differently to me...

Oh dear my life is far from dull but I shall still enjoy the Coronation of our King

I will find something (anything) else to do rather than watch the coronation.

Me too. There'll be no TV or radio for me.

Might scrub the skirting boards. They're looking mucky.

M0nica Sat 08-Apr-23 17:13:22

That is very judgemental, assuming anyone who watches the coronation otherwise leads a very dull life.

I will watch the coronation., as I watched the funeral of the late Queen These are significant historic events, like it or not. However I have not watched any of the royal weddings that have taken place over the last 50 years. Now weddings, any weddings really are boring.

Daisymae Sat 08-Apr-23 17:01:32

Well I will be watching, although not glued to the TV. I'm not a royalist but it's once in a lifetime so I don't begrudge a few hours.

MrsKen33 Sat 08-Apr-23 16:45:41

I was very young but remember watching the Queen’s coronation, on a tiny television,. The whole family squashed into my aunty’s front room.
So I shall watch all of Charle’s coronation, with family. And probably have a nice supper with champagne afterwards.

Callistemon21 Sat 08-Apr-23 16:15:52

Will the shops be open, as on a normal Saturday?

mumofmadboys Sat 08-Apr-23 16:12:46

Per chance we are going to West Wales for a weeks holiday that day. I'm hoping the roads will be quiet. We will watch the highlights on the TV when we get there. So far I think Charles is doing a good job.

NanaDana Sat 08-Apr-23 16:04:50

I'll be very selectively watching some of it, purely from a historic/spectacle point of view, as I have zero allegiance to Royalty/aristocracy of any description, which IMHO represent a total anachronism. Not looking forward to the absolute glut of seemingly interminable TV/media coverage before, during and after the event, which will no doubt have many of us who are of a Republican persuasion reaching for the box sets again.

I booked trains to go to London that weekend. Will stay with my eldest daughter. On the Saturday she will drive me over to see my BiL and SiL (who has alziemers). Each time I see her a little more had disappeared. We will all totally ignore any of the expensive bread and circus on tv.tw
On the Sunday I will be driven to see my youngest daughter and two youngest g.children. They moved house just before xmas, and this is likely to be my only chance to see their new home.
I will return home on the Monday. So, hopefully, will b able to totally cut out anything to do with this business of one man placing a heavy hat on another man.

Really is time that all these ridiculous titles, ermine, dressing up, and touching the forelock, became a thing for history.

That made me laugh...

I agree... it's ridiculous and well past it's time.

Unfortunately, vampirequeen, he is your King whether you like it or not.

🤴

Did somebody say "patronising"?

Statement of fact.

🙂

I am not bothering about it at all. Hate the expense but a lot of people enjoy this in their otherwise very dull lives so let's all be kind to them wink

Sneery!

^so let's all be kind to them🤔

Kind? Or patronising?

It's odd, isn't it Blondiescot

Is it a thing on Gransnet - if you're not doing exactly as others do, think as they think, you must be having a dull life?

We're having a neighbourhood party the next day and, in fact, I don't think many of us could be described as having dull lives although DH and I have slowed down a bit lately!

The republicans in the neighbourhood are coming along too; it's a good excuse for a get-together.

Jaxjacky Sat 08-Apr-23 15:38:43

Only plans for that weekend are for a family bbq on the Sunday, not sure what Saturday will bring yet, it’s 4 weeks away, hopefully football.

BlueBelle Sat 08-Apr-23 14:51:39

I like Charles and Camilla as people but can’t stand all this huge expense for this very entitled family I hate that their riches (the whole lot of them) could fund hospitals and schools, nurses, doctors and dentists instead of ermine and crowns (and what is it ? £8 million on pictures of the king what’s that all about ?)
I ll be on the allotment if it’s a nice day or in the garden or on the beach My daughter and granddaughter have booked the weekend to go for a city break somewhere in Europe great idea I think
I m not anti royal I m anti wasted money when the whole world is in a crisis

Anniebach Sat 08-Apr-23 14:37:08

Thank you Blondiescot , the comments were unkind, can it be that people who make unkind comments do so because they
live dull lives 🤔

Blondiescot Sat 08-Apr-23 14:27:24

Anniebach

Whose comments ?

Sorry, I meant the comments about people having a dull life. I wasn't referring to your post.

Georgesgran Sat 08-Apr-23 14:26:38

In this small cul-de-sac development, some are Monarchists, others not - but it will be a good excuse for a drink and a catch up with the neighbours - weather permitting. Tiaras not compulsory, I hope.

Foxygloves Sat 08-Apr-23 14:11:39

or let the thread turn into a slanging match

Good luck with that hmm
