I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

Whatever our own personal thoughts on the monarchy this is a bit of history, maybe never to be repeated.

Never to be repeated? There will be another coronation in less than 20 years

Franbern, but that is exactly why it'll be 'on' in our household.....it is history in the making. Whatever our own personal thoughts on the monarchy this is a bit of history, maybe never to be repeated.
I've found I have become more nostalgic as I've got older and whilst I don't have very strong convictions for the monarchy I know I would regret dismissing this.

It’s difficult for Charles. The Queen was a very hard act to follow. I’ll give him a chance.

Can’t be doing with Camilla, though.

We will watch the coronation on the TV. It is a hugely important event in our history. Some may not like the Royal family but it is highly regarded by many around the world. Bet those who say they aren’t interested will still enjoy an extra Bank Holiday though, perhaps any anti royalists should go to work and not enjoy a rest day?

Eloethan Thu 13-Apr-23 23:52:46

The monarchy is by its very nature a political issue.

effalump Wed 12-Apr-23 18:22:25

The Queen was my Queen for the whole of my life but I've never been a fan of Charles, he's too political. It's bad enough with all the politicians and he can be like a petulent child. I certainly won't be watching.

I think the continuation of the monarchy suggests our acceptance of unearned privilege and increasing inequality, as does the unelected House of Lords.

Sadly true of so many people.

In all seriousness. What could anyone possibly learn from watching a ceremony that involves someone putting a shiny hat on someone else then the second person riding around the town with his family in a gold coach dressed in ermine.

They could learn their place, I suppose.

I know, it's so ridiculous.

leeds22 Wed 12-Apr-23 13:14:28

I suppose the TV will be on in the sitting room and we will wander in and out as the mood takes us. Can't get too enthusiastic about it though.

GrammarGrandma Wed 12-Apr-23 11:55:59

He is though. You don't get to choose your monarch. Of course that doesn't mean you have to watch the coronation or celebrate in any way. I don't feel that Sunak is "my Prime Minister" but he is. I felt this more when Johnson was PM though. Not to mention Thatcher in the past.

Greta Wed 12-Apr-23 09:20:59

Vickymeldrew, so please tell us what we will learn that will be of value to us.

So, nothing that a five year old doesn't know then.

vickymeldrew Wed 12-Apr-23 09:10:15

Oh volver3, I love your sense of humour - my five year old came back from her first day at school and declared she didn’t need to go again ‘cos she knew everything !

It's had its day and it represents things ( including our colonial atrocities) I'm not inclined to celebrate. It's not so much about the individuals themselves. I'll therefore not be watching the event, but gardening or having family over
I know others have different views and will want to watch the coronation for a variety of reasons.

The Coronation will be a hugely historic event of national and international interest, an event that may not happen again in my lifetime. I truly don’t understand anyone not wanting to watch this for its educational value alone.
You don’t have to be a royalist to watch it you know and maybe you’ll learn something!

What could we possibly learn that is of educational value?

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 12-Apr-23 08:31:15

I was hoping we’d have a street party but was afraid to suggest it in case I had to organise it! I still find it difficult to call Charlie-Boy king!

The crowning bit is on the Saturday!

Kartush Tue 11-Apr-23 22:45:59

I will watch it for the historical value, that and morbid curiosity

Eloethan Tue 11-Apr-23 22:31:50

We won't be watching any of it. We will either go out for the day or go for a short break.

Lilyflower Tue 11-Apr-23 22:27:28

We will watch highlights and intermittently during the day, which, being a bank holiday, we’ll enjoy immensely.

Luckygirl3 Tue 11-Apr-23 21:45:25

Our parish council are funding mugs for all the children in the village and got an artist to do a drawing of the locality for it. It is simply awful and looks as though a child did it. Bit of a joke really. I suspect the royalists will be horrified, which wickedly makes me chuckle.

We teach a regular karate session on Saturday mornings from 9.30am till 12.30pm so I'm out until at least 1.30pm. We have no idea how many students will attend on Coronation Day. If enough students are keen to attend and their training fees will cover our costs, the classes will go ahead as normal and we won't worry ourselves about missing the coverage of the event. We're planning to hand out a yes/no slip a couple of Saturdays before so we will be able to make a decision. We have to pay for the venue unless we cancel in good time and we have travelling costs. It's a 50 mile round trip for me and I'll be cross if I turn up and no one else does!

stillaspringchicken Tue 11-Apr-23 20:19:13

I'll be at work then will see what Netflix has to offer in the evening
