Totally disagree.

I think the average gran is 70 years plus.

I’m 78 and don’t fit any of that criteria.

Fanny so funny enjoyed that can agree with a few as a young 63 year old who loves smooth radio shops at M&S and aldi. And is still working😏fab post though!

I am not your typical gransnetter, I don’t have any grandchildren and I am an immigrant!

I do feel very sad whenever I read the bereavement and estrangement threads. Or when the poster said their adult children never bother to contact them. Being on GN made myself realised how lucky I am that my daughter still talks to me.

My daughter has been saying how lucky we are as a family, to have survived the pandemic and to be able to cope with the current cost of living and housing crisis when there are so many people struggling right now.

Having been on GN for about 5 years I can honestly say none of you are typical. That is to say you are all very different and interesting.

Well I can safely say I don't read any British papers because we can't get them here! I'd just have to read the Daily Mail out of sheer curiosity, though. Is it really that bad? I am going to google it....

Can't you get the Guardian online? It does report Australian news!

You have my sympathy. In asking a perfectly ordinary question, (in my opinion), you have been shot down in flames by the 'know-it-all', 'take offence at the drop of a hat' brigade all trying to outdo one another with their virtue signalling

Nanna, there must have been something wrong with the poll you were doing when the responders told deliberate lies and these were recorded as facts.

I think in a proper questionnaire the responders are asked a variety of questions to the effect of detecting lies.

Years ago I used to have a job as a pollster and had to ask a lot of questions door to door ( it was job number 3 at weekends when the kids were at private schools). The obvious lies many told were an absolute eye opener. For example, asking a group of drunk blokes holding beers in their hands if they consumed alcohol- the answer was, ‘no’. I wrote down what they said and had a bit of a laugh.

It would be interesting to see an updated census for Gnet. Despite the participants would be self selecting there should be a good many participants as Gnetters are not shy of expressing their opinions and interests.

Years ago there was a "census" of gransnetters (not compulsory!) and once the answers had been counted up, the results were put on the forum. It was interesting. I wonder whether the answers would be the same today? Also, would people be as prepared to answer honestly as they were then?

Is there a scientific profile of the typical (median) Gransnetter? I expect the owner or manager of the website has one so the website can be efficiently marketed.
Without such a profile to hand all we have are subjective impressions.

I've had a flipin hard life. My story would fill a book. It's not for public titillation though so it will stop private. I count my blessing because in the words of Desiterata, "for all its shams, broken promises and dreams, it is still a beautiful world"

There is no such thing as a typical gransnetter, unless it is someone who reads without ever posting, but occasionally tells those who do post that they are doing it all wrong.

I'm with Bluebell on the description criteria. Can't find myself in there at all.

That’s clearly a little dig at me since I posted those three newspapers. As I’ve said on a different thread, I also dip into The Guardian online so I hope that’s balanced enough for you. I also look at online news sites too. And then, like most balanced people, I form my own opinion. But, I’m never smug or contemptuous of others.

Yes - put their username into the Gransnet search box which is up near the top of the page, at the right-hand side. When the list of results comes up, you can sort it by date, and see the latest posts first.

At the time I shopped with Tesco Online, and the service was quite new. The research was to find out about what people liked and disliked about the whole thing - Tesco itself, home delivery and the website. I was in one of numerous groups, each chosen from a different demographic based on our spending patterns (we all had points cards). I was paid £50 (and this was about 25 years ago, so it was decent money) to go to a hotel and chat about it all for an hour after work over tea and sandwiches. When I got there, there were six or so women of my age. We all had the equivalent of a Seasalt coat, all had similar hairstyles and shoes, and all lived in different but similar towns, based on house prices, rural/city/suburb balance, and the measures in those Acorn profiles of the time. We all had professional jobs, had two children of roughly the same age as my two, and even had similar names (both us and our children). We ate similar things, spent money on eating out as a family once a week or so, were interested in healthy food and home cooking, and more.

It was very strange, and there will have been groups of young men who lived in the city centre in riverside apartments and liked football, and old ladies who had cats and perms and drank gin being interviewed in other rooms elsewhere .
