…about the hairdresser I’ve used for ages who is frankly not very good (but she’s close by and you can always get an appt) and booked another for today. Hair is way overdue for a cut, and I want it a little bit different. Since I’m hopeless at explaining, I’m taking a photo in. So 🤞.

Hope you have a good experience this time. After much searching I found a lovely hairdresser about 6 years ago. I float out of the salon feeling fabulous and that’s how a good hairdo should make you feel.

Good luck 😁🤞

This is why my hair is long - I got fed up with hairdressers not achieving what I wanted.

Mollygo Tue 11-Apr-23 11:51:53

Good luck with that. I tried it a fortnight ago and I’m still pleased with the result!

It's a total lottery... but then so is so much else these days. I'm pushing 80, so still go in for the occasional "perm". Took me a while to find a hairdresser who not only still offers them, but who also does a decent job. If you find a good one, hang onto them like grim death! They're few and far between.

I had the same hairdresser for forty years and then during covid lockdown she decided to retire. I thought she was good, but then I was introduced to my present one and she is amazing. My hair has never been cut so well. Not cheap but worth every penny.

I have a great hairdresser and I also go to the salon for my nails and sometimes a facial. Do you tip? What is the going rate for tipping?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 11-Apr-23 12:08:57

Me too Lucky. I have never, ever, floated out of the salon feeling fabulous like Blossoming apart from when I used to go just to have it put up in the 60s. Rather, I have dived out hoping not to see anyone I know and rushed home to re-do it.

I am with a new hairdresser now. My previous one always seemed to have her granddaughters in the salon wanting this or that done and always at the time of my appointment! Hairdresser would say "you don't mind if I French plait our hair before I see to you do you? I didn't have much choice in the matter actually.

Then lockdown happened and the salon closed down like everywhere else. That was my opportunity to seek out a new stylist post lockdown and she is brilliant. She keeps to the appointment time and the rest of the staff are amazing too.

It was fantastic! A Brazilian chap - best haircut I’ve had for ages. Will def. be going back.
Dh is out - I’m not sure he’ll recognise me when he gets back!

TBH I do sometimes wonder whether my previous hairdresser is a money-laundering wheeze. I know her dh has his own business, and I nearly every time I walk past, which is fairly often, the place is so un-busy I have to wonder how she can even make enough to pay the business rates. And this has been going on for years.

I’m going to feel bad now when walking past - she very often sees me and waves, and it’s going to be obvious that I’ve treacherously gone elsewhere. 🙁

I’m with you both Lucky and Shep
I dye it myself and cut bits off when they look a bit past it.
There isn’t a great deal that you can do with my hair

Blossoming Tue 11-Apr-23 13:29:56

So glad to hear your update Witzend.

There seem to be a lot of people putting up with unsatisfactory service. It’s your hair, don’t accept second best.

I felt so guilty when I found a new hairdresser and bumped into my old hairdresser with my fresh new do.

Hermother Tue 11-Apr-23 13:55:22

I went to the same hairdresser for 15 years but she decided not to continue post COVID lockdown. It took me ages to find another but eventually I found an even better one, she was fantastic. One day, I arrived for my appointment only to find that their had been a huge row in the salon that morning and she'd walked out. The owner of the salon did my hair cut instead and she did a terrible job. So I'm still looking for a decent hairdressers and there aren't that many on this island.

I swear bt taking in photographs. That reminds me bought a magazine for DGD last week and I must remember to photocopy one of the hairdos in it as it is exactly what I want.

Cheeseplantmad Tue 11-Apr-23 15:02:37

I used the same hairdresser for over 15 years which were quite few miles away , that is until they moved their premises to a different salon which had no parking places nearby , so , with that I decided to try a local salon which had good reviews .
I took a photo on my phone with me the style that I liked and that made things so much easier as new hairdresser knew exactly what I wanted . It is best move I’ve made as it’s just up the road from me . You don’t know until you try as they say .

Rarely get the cut I think I want, though to be truthful the cut I want hasnt always suit me when I get it, take a picture of the cut and if she cuts true to it be happy, and if not find another hairdresser or another cut next time

karmalady Tue 11-Apr-23 16:39:57

I go to a gents hairdresser, no bells and whistles. She does a fabulous cut for me, follows exactly a picture that I take each and every time. I am the only customer in there for the whole time. She only charges £20 and the cut lasts at least 7 weeks

My last three hairdressers were bells and whistles salons, very pricey and after a few sessions they just did a routine cut and blow dry. Last one cost me an arm and leg £60 and took her 20 minutes from start to finish, including a junior hairwash and a customer phone call

The one I have now is a keeper

CanadianGran Tue 11-Apr-23 18:10:56

Witzend, I'm glad the new hairdresser worked out for you! A good cut makes a huge difference.

I have a very good hairdresser, who has a salon in her house. I've not had any issues, and now that I have stopped colouring my hair, appointments are fairly quick.

Enidd Tue 11-Apr-23 18:18:25

Taking a photo in is a good idea.

Just before lockdown my hairdresser was finishing at the salon she worked and was going mobile. I’d been to her for years and was ready for a change (I did try and ask…then it looked exactly the same). I took her mobile number then Covid followed…during which time my hair has grown and I now go to a new hairdressers.

I have wondered if I’ll ever bump into the old hairdresser with my new style!

DamaskRose Wed 12-Apr-23 12:58:31

I’d rather go to the dentist than a hairdresser!

Annie25 Wed 12-Apr-23 13:00:17

I've had same hairdresser for past 8 years ,used to go to salon but now she comes to my home which is great ....

Loobs Wed 12-Apr-23 13:08:21

I sometimes work as an extra and recently worked on The Crown in a crowd scene. I had to visit Elstree studios the week before filming for a wardrobe, hair and make-up 'dry run'. The girl who did my hair made it look amazing, the best I've had it in years. Unfortunately she lives in the north so no point travelling that distance and I wasn't allowed to photo it (even though photographs are taken for continuity, we aren't allowed photos on set) and when I went on the day of filming I had a different hairdresser and it wasn't half as good. Somewhere up north is an amazing hairdresser and I don't even know her name......

Lookout01 Wed 12-Apr-23 13:12:01

I moved areas 6 years ago and left behind a really good hairdresser but unfortunately haven't been able to find a good one since. The last one I tried a few months ago hardly cut anything off at all and I looked no different (£48 later!) So I'm afraid I trim my fringe and any straggly bits and an inch off the ponytail when it's wet, myself now (I have shoulder length hair)
