Worst haircut you ever had?

A follow-on from my happier thread!

Mine was over 20 years ago. The chap had cut it perfectly well before, so I wasn’t paying too much attention, but he was evidently on another planet - there was zero conversation and when he showed me the back I nearly had a fit. It resembled a 1950’s schoolboy’s short back and sides.

I couldn’t believe it - was instantly in tears, it looked so dreadful - they were apologetic and said I needn’t pay but like an idiot I did - fled asap still in tears home, where I phoned dd1, at uni over 100 miles away.

I won’t say what I told her I looked like - it would sound terribly un PC now - but after I’d hung up she phoned the salon and gave the chap a bollocking!

Only a couple of days later, however, I felt so bad for being so upset about my hair. Same dd phoned in tears to say a fellow student, a male friend who’d stayed with us, had been killed in a road accident in Moscow.
Whereas my hair would soon grow back.

Worst haircut was when I was about 8 and persuaded my mother that I wanted to look like George (Georgina) in the Famous Five. She showed the hairdresser a picture of George and his short boyish haircut and the hairdresser set to work snipping away at my hair which was (and still is) very fine. The result was a disaster. I hated it, felt very self-conscious. and didn't tell anyone that I was trying to look like George. I just blamed it on the hairdresser. Couldn't wait for it grow out and unfortunately my hair grows very slowly.

In shock after mum died suddenly, I went to a new trendy hairdresser and had a sort of punk hairstyle, shaved one side, long the other and spiky on top, haha looked dreadful as I have thick wavy/curly hair. Soon grew out and I have had long hair ever since.

I had a perm in the early seventies on dead straight fine hair, it stuck out like a cross between Cleopatra and Crystal Tips.

I went to an Eco hairdresser to have blonde streaks put in She assured me she could do them using a ‘natural’ harmless non chemical process
Alas they turned out to be orange coloured not blonde. Horrendous had to go to another hairdresser who used the regular chemical formula to turn ‘em blonde.
Never again !

I was pregnant with our second child and wanted an easier style so I went very short.

I left the salon and was walking home with our 3 year old daughter who had beautiful long blonde curly hair, I was feeling very self conscious and was trying to catch a glimpse of myself in car mirrors, shop windows etc.

Whilst walking through the park a lady of about 60 (my age now) stopped me and said “ what beautiful hair” I responded with “ do you really think so, I’m not so sure I think it’s too short”

She stared long and hard and said “I’m referring to your daughter”.

I was too embarrassed to even try and explain….she must have thought my vanity was off the scale.

Two horrors; a sleek cut that looked great when I left the salon, but the next day I couldn't do a thing - not a thing - with it and rushed back, where the stylist advised having it short. He restyled it and it looked so much better - but I really hadn't wanted short hair. The other was a truly ghastly perm - my Mother's idea to fix my fine hair. It looked awful - I tried to keep my school hat on even in class, because everyone was pointing and laughing in the playground.

'Frizzlebonce' was my new nickname after the disastrous Home Perm that my mother insisted I had with a view to make me more 'girlie'. Eventually grew it long and so it has remained. I am eighty now!

My worst hair experience was in the 1970s. As an aspiring hippie, I bought a sachet of '100% Natural Hair Colour' I think it was a mixture of rhubarb, saffron and henna from one of those shops that had sacks of beans and jars of lentils everywhere.

Excitedly I went home, mixed the powders with water according to directions and poured it over my blonde hair. 10 minutes later, I looked under the towel and my hair was bright green! This was before such hair colours were acceptable. Despite the efforts of 2 hairdressers, the only answer was to dye my hair brown but even then when the sun shone my hair glinted green! It took ages to grow out.

In 2003 I was working in London and there was a Vidal Sassoon salon close by. Having always been in awe of the brand ever since the 60s, I booked an appointment for a cut. The guy totally ignored my requests telling me they didn't cut hair in that style. I really should have left but put my faith in him. Total disaster. My work colleagues, in an attempt to make me feel better, told me the cut was chic but I knew they were lying!

I had a perm at a very expensive and well known department store in London. On one side she must have made the rollers too tight or something because the hair all broke off. One side nice curls, the other shorter and frizzy. They offered to repair the damage for free but I didn't trust them, got it cut off elsewhere and hardly ever get my hair cut these days, do it myself. As for DIY,
I also have dog clippers for my cockapoo, and my partner and son queue up and like theirs done first.

Did anyone else plait their wet hair at night with tiny elastic bands? There would be a few dozen plaits. The next morning my hair was transformed into a chrysanthemum. I thought I looked wonderful.

Fannycornforth I think way your hair was cut looked lovely, why where you so upset?

Grandmabatty Fri 14-Apr-23 16:10:39

Ladyleftfieldlover Yes!! I did. It took ages to plait my hair and then unplait it in the morning, but I loved it.

My mum tricked me into having a perm when I was eleven. She said I was old enough to go to the hairdressers alone and she'd explained what I needed. I thought I was getting a haircut and was too shy to ask why they were putting rollers in. The result was awful. I couldn't believe mum had done that to me. It took years to grow out.

Blondiescot

Not a cut, but the one and only perm I ever had. I have naturally fine, poker straight hair, and went to a new hairdresser who convinced me a 'body perm' wouldn't give me curls (I loathe curly hair), but just add volume. This was the 80s and I ended up with a poodle perm Bon Jovi would have been proud of! Never again...

Same as you Blondiescot. I wanted a Princess Diana flick style. Thought a body perm would do it. I don't know what they gave me but I came out with an afro. Far too curly.
I went home and cried!

Another when I was very young I always had a ponytail until my brother (3 years older) who had a scissors in his hand, chopped it off. It was a right mess. Apparently I sat there and let him do it! I ended up with a basin cut after that.

Worst haircut I ever had?
Twas one I gave myself.
Then I went to my hair stylist and she made it worse! PMS???
Bad day all around.
That happened 35 yrs ago.
I have ever since cut my own hair.
I’m pretty good at it too.
I’ve SAVED a LOT of MONEY!
It always grows back.

Ohhh this is sooooo clear in my memory hahahaha ( dont know what Im laughing for )

My mum was a hairdresser all her working life.

I showed her a picture from a girls magazine ( Jackie )

Take into açount my mums regular customers hairstyles were the tight perm and blue rinse .... so there I sit with full excitement I would resemble the model in Jackie magazine !!!!!

The resemblance was more towards a choir boy than a super model !!!!!

I ended up at a OH LA LA hairdressers in town and was asked by someone who resembled Kenneth in Benidorm who cut my hair.... I explained my mum who was in fact a hairdresser...

He almost fell into the sink and spit out well i would tell your mother to stick to making yorkshire puddings.

I'll never ever forget it.

😂 🤣 😂 🤣

Exactly my experience. Ended up first having it all cut short, then straightened then bleached as it looked so boring. Very expensive mistake, and not good for hair either, though thankfully it didn’t break or fall out!

I was happy with my hairdresser until we moved in 1962 and I went to a hairdresser recommended by a new neighbour. She cut it so badly that I decided to cut it myself. I have never been to hairdresser since then.

Jaffacake2 Fri 14-Apr-23 21:46:36

As a young teen I wanted my long curly hair cut like Marc Bolan.
Came out of hairdressers looking like Thora Hird !!

Froglady Fri 14-Apr-23 22:02:06

When I was a child and had the old pudding basin haircut as we couldn't afford to get our hair cut at a hairdresser's.

Curlywhirly Fri 14-Apr-23 22:10:13

In my 20s I had elbow length straight hair and on a whim decided I wanted a new style. I went to an expensive hairdressers in Manchester city centre and asked them to restyle my hair. The hairdresser layered it then permed it! (despite me saying I didn't like curly hair 'oh it will just give it body and volume don't worry'). He dried it under a heatlamp and the result was something like a leo sayer mess of frizz! I was horrified and told him it was awful and he then wet it and blow dried it into a much nicer Farrah Fawcet layered shaggy style. It was much nicer, but he warned me in acerbic tones that there was no way I could possibly blow dry it like that myself as I had so much hair. He was blummin' right too - I had to keep going to a hairdressers twice a week to get it blowdried. I ended up getting it all cut to chin length to try and cut the dreaded perm out! Never again. 😣

When I was young in the 40,s my dad took me with him to the local boarders shop to get my hair cut. I have very fine hair with low hairline at the back. I remember he shaved the back of my head and I looked like a boy for ages. I would never get another barbers haircut again in my life. Getting a good hairdresser who is good at cutting is worth its weight in gold if you have hair like mine. I was in my 60,s before I found one I liked, he still comes every week to do my hair since he retired.

Shouldn’t laff really 😂 but some of these tales are so funny.
No hair nightmares here but have learned to say to hairdressers, just take the ends off if I really want a good inch or two cut off.

That was what I wanted!
It certainly wasn’t what I got!
