Watching the TV last night some one mentioned something being 50 years ago. It was quite a shock to discover they meant 1973!!

How the heck did that happen?

Fleurpepper Tue 18-Apr-23 20:58:52

... or not! But either it can, or it can't.

Fleurpepper Tue 18-Apr-23 20:59:54

as I don't believe it can or could, happy to leave mine.

Fleurpepper it’s all in the phrasing of the OP, as I posted on your when were your parents born thread

Goodness, nickers in a twist.

Kitty meant to make nice conversation.

I'm old, my husband is old, our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren are old. Our great great is very young.

About 10 years ago an old schoolfriend and I arranged a meet up. We arranged to meet in a pub/restaurant having not seen each other since leaving school.

I took some old photos of us when at school and we had them laid on the table and a young waitress brought our food and said “oh I love photos” I said they were of us when we were at school, she looked at them and said “how long is it since you saw each other?” We both said “40 years” and the look on her face as she said “oh …….. my ……….god”. 😱

Of course all those threads were to make pleasant, or in my case, interesting conversation. The info in the replies could apparently be misused by some, it does not matter how the question is phrased, does it? All 3 threads that resulted in personaly information given by some, could be misused. And of course, neither were 'phishing' at all.

I hope it was clear that the mini skirts and Afghan coats were in my head only! I don't go swanning around in them now at 73.

I love this idea Kate!

When I started work in a bank, I was told there was a ‘marriage gratuity’ of £200 paid to women who got married after working for five years. (Women were not paid pensions back then, yes I know, how weird!)

Five years! They could have told me it was fifty, as it seemed sooo long away.

Now, of course, five years disappears in a flash.

Why?

confused

You have really disappointed me Kate! grin

I could give it a go I suppose........shock

So many shocks now realising, oh, was that really 50yrs/40yrs ago! It seems to me Christmas arrives every six months now as time is flying by so much faster.
Now that I realise how quickly April has arrived, I am hoping time slows down a bit for us to enjoy long summer months. 🤞

You have just reminded me Kate1949, DH had an Afghan coat and almost shoulder length hair. Both our mothers were not impressed but I thought he looked fab!

Going to visit an exhibition in our Town Hall, the medieval charter for the town, original, was fascinating. As I walked around, things became more familiar, why, because lived much of it. Scary. So us older generation, living history.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened! (I think that was by Terry Pratchett.)

My youngest of three will be 40 this week! When did that scruffy teenager turn into the responsible dad he is now?

Jb2022 Wed 19-Apr-23 11:42:16

When I hear people say “that was way back in the ‘80s” I get a shock! I would say way back in the ‘50s.

DamaskRose Wed 19-Apr-23 11:43:50

I can remember my mother saying, “20 years ago …” and thinking how old she must be. Now that I can remember 60 years ago 20 seems like yesterday!

Doglessfornow Wed 19-Apr-23 11:46:50

My son is a grandfather! It seems like yesterday that this dear little blond boy stole my heart!
He’s 57 now, and I’m 81. How did that happen?

RakshaMK Wed 19-Apr-23 11:51:28

Apparently my #2 son will be 28 next week

Laurensnan Wed 19-Apr-23 11:54:19

My grandson last week said 'do you remember in the old days when there were feet everywhere and lines and no one had faces outside. I was confused. Turns out he meant during lockdown🤣 I suppose 2020 is yesterday to me but 1/3 of his life ago to him. On the same note my 12 year old granddaughter told me the radio was playing ancient music. It was 1970's hour. I laughed thinking it over the top. Then realised it was like me at 12 in 1973 listening music from the 1920's.

It is frightening just how the years fly, friends are celebrating Ruby and Golden Wedding anniversaries and I can remember attending my grandparents' Golden Wedding where everyone seemed so old......mind you, they were old then, all perms and frocks.

An interesting point; nobody born this century voted for Brexit. Or against it of course.

leeds22 Wed 19-Apr-23 11:58:23

I remember being 14 and discussing how old we would be in 2000. I don't think anyone imagined being 52 let alone 75. But I've had some fun on the way.

I was thinking about this yesterday, in particular about how fast time goes by now. My oldest daughter is 47, my youngest is several years older than I was when she was born.
When people talk about the 1990's I think if it as just a few years ago but it is 30!

Omaoma57 Wed 19-Apr-23 12:04:56

Went to the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm on Monday to watch Cam….realised that I first went there in 1974….

Pollypot Wed 19-Apr-23 12:06:51

I smiled at the scrolling back to birth year.I always think it will dissappear before I reach it.1936 for me.Where oh where do all the years go.grin
