Watching the TV last night some one mentioned something being 50 years ago. It was quite a shock to discover they meant 1973!!

How the heck did that happen?

mokryna Tue 18-Apr-23 18:07:32

My DD1 is 50 tomorrow. I am going to make her a surprise lunch with my GDs. SiL is taking her out in the evening.

Do fathers ever think of the children they abandoned from so long ago? Just thinking.

Funny no-one has accused kitty of phishing. (and of course she is not- just chatting and observation- with dates which could so easily be used for identification).

🤔

I thought kittylester was thinking about events, not personal information about posters.

Here's a list of UK Number Ones from 1973 - can we remember the words?

It was brought home to me a few months ago as a 50th anniversary reunion is being organised for our year at university. We were 18! Still can't believe it's 50 years ago.

My youngest will be 52 this year, the eldest will be 60 in December, then there were 3 in between.

Margs Tue 18-Apr-23 17:25:49

1973......50 years ago indeed. So that means the Punk Revolution will be 50 years ago in 2026.
Blimey!

Good lord! That means my eldest is 50 this year! Time certainly has flown ................

kittylester Tue 18-Apr-23 15:07:54

Our eldest son is 53 this year. Horrifying thought!

NanaDana Tue 18-Apr-23 14:55:05

Time is most definitely elastic, in that certain memories, for example the birth of our daughter in 1973, are as fresh as a daisy, yet ask me what I was doing last month and I may struggle. Strange that, isn't it? I'm now pushing 80, and to say that time flies doesn't begin to get there. Our daughter will be celebrating her 50th in July, yet it seems no time at all since I was celebrating my own. What a lovely surprise party the family arranged for me, and once again, those memories remain vivid... and yes, when I have to fill in a form on line which requires year of birth, I'm conscious of the fact that there aren't many more years of scrolling possible below 1947 now! Still here though, and living each day as if it might be getting close to check out time. Carpe diem!

My 'baby' son will be 50 this year and is in complete jovial denial. I've asked him not to tell too many people and remind them that I was a child bride!!

We are great great grand parents. Old.

M0nica Tue 18-Apr-23 11:58:13

50 years ago I was 8 months pregnant with DD. her brother was 20 months old. One of DS's childhood friends, it was a family friendship, is a grandfather!

My grandparents were born in 1880, 1882(x2) and 1884. DH and I will both be 80 this year.

Elless Tue 18-Apr-23 11:31:37

Are you talking about when they mentioned Emmerdale had been on air for 50 years Kitty? I was shocked too. My DH and I were having a discussion about a 70 year old he met who was learning to ride a motorcycle and I thought he was too old until I realised my DH is 65 and I'm 62 and we ride 😂😂

I hope it was clear that the mini skirts and Afghan coats were in my head only! I don't go swanning around in them now at 73.

Ali08 Tue 18-Apr-23 11:20:42

I know what you mean kitty. Although our granddaughter is 23 and the light of our lives, it still feels strange when she introduces me to someone saying 'This is my nan'. Although I love being her nan, I feel like saying 'No you don't understand. I'm still in mini skirts and Afghan coats'.

I wonder what my lot would say if I wore a mini skirt, especially with bare legs?
I think I'd be too busy laughing at the looks on their faces to hear whatever came out of their mouths!

Thank you kitty
You were a great help and support during his dementia.
Sorry to derail the thread, please all go back to the OP.

kittylester Tue 18-Apr-23 10:31:09

Oh, ann, sending huge hugs. thanks

annsixty Tue 18-Apr-23 10:25:06

To add to that it is 4 years today since my DH died, it seems like a lifetime or yesterday, depending on the day or the memory.

annsixty Tue 18-Apr-23 10:09:45

I get a shock when I have to enter my birth date online and I scroll forever to reach 1937!!
I keep expecting that one time it won’t go as far as that.
However I do know I am far from the oldest GN member.

Wyllow3 Tue 18-Apr-23 10:03:57

It always feels "no way!" but when I think about it my Nan was born in 1897 and I carry her stories and my mums and Dad's stories and everything that happened - what a rich tapestry - its almost impossible to think what a different sense of history our grandchildren will grow up with.

Witzend Tue 18-Apr-23 10:02:56

I do often wonder how I can possibly be 74. How on earth did that happen?
(though better than the alternative, I know…)

Fleurpepper Tue 18-Apr-23 09:55:55

Cheeseplantmad

I feel like I’d got on a train in 1973 , it then raced by at top speed , and now I’ve got off the train in 2023 , only to find I’m now 50 years older and the best years of my life has passed by in a flash.

Very often things from the past spring to mind for no apparent reason , some with happiness some with sadness .

The only consolation is that I’m now much more confident, knowledgeable and wiser and have my lovely grown up children and grandchildren to enjoy .

I got on the wrong train in London in 1970 ... the rest is a long history (I asked a young man to help me- and we married in 1971...)

Well yes, a true shock as our DD1 will be 50 soon (so probably something happened in ... 1972 ;) )

Mum was horrified when my sister turned 60. "Fancy having a daughter whose a pensioner" she cried. That was now 18 years ago and sadly neither are with us now.
