I hope you all know that you can opt out of hearing this on your mobile phones.
Go to Settings then Notifications, find Emergency warning and turn it off.

15.33 and still nothing here - I'm on EE in central Scotland.

I got it but MrA didn't. Don't know what time though, didn't have the phone on me but the display was on there. MrA has alerts turned off.

There is another possible use for national alerts like this. When I lived in the US a friend and I were driving out of Atlanta when all the smart signs on the freeway started showing descriptions of a car and a partial registration plate. Our phones went off with the same message. A child had been abducted by the driver of the car and the police were getting everyone to look for the car. The child was recovered within about an hour.

Apparently some Three customers didn’t receive the alert. I guess that’s what this about - testing the system. Though Elon Musk’s failures are more spectacular! 🚀

I didn't want to be caught so I switched my phone off for half an hour. 15:00 came and went and at 15:05 I turned my phone back on. Almost immediately I got the alarm. Really annoyed about that.

What was even more annoying was that the synthetic voice had an American accent. I mean, speech synthesis has come a long way and even my Alexa devices do better than that. I can just about put up with English Home Counties (despite painful memories of being tormented as a transplanted 11-year-old with a Wirral accent) and I didn't really expect Glesca patter, but American? I wonder who's running that show.

We both received it. Over in a flash before I realised what it was and not very loud.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Sun 23-Apr-23 15:48:37

I'm using Smarty on a Fairphone 3+ by the way.

Jaxjacky Sun 23-Apr-23 15:51:35

3, Tesco, Smart and giff gaff failed apparently, hence it was a test.

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Apr-23 15:52:40

My husband didn't get an alert.
EE and enabled.
🤷

I don’t know why I was so startled by it. It’s not like we haven’t had plenty of advance notice. But I’d just got my key in the door and it gave me such a jump my bladder almost had a rapid unscheduled disassembly just like Elon Musk’s rocket 🤣

HowVeryDareYou2 Sun 23-Apr-23 15:55:17

My husband, both sons and I are all on Three and didn't get the alert

Apparently you need to be on the 4g network and using Android 11 or iPhone iOS 14.5. So older phones won't get it, including me. Not had anything by 4pm.

Nicenanny3 Sun 23-Apr-23 16:01:06

We're both with Tesco and both our phones got alert at 3.

cornergran Sun 23-Apr-23 16:01:06

Nothing on either of ours in Somerset. Both on the 3 network. Phones are up to date. Oh well. Missed out.

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Apr-23 16:02:31

Don't be silly Aveline - you need to wait for the pathogens to develop.. you won't be saying that in a week or two!
grin

What voice ? I got the alarm but no voice.

Aveline Sun 23-Apr-23 16:06:02

NotSpaghetti grin. At least I got the warning. OH didn't. Both in the same house. I'd better warn him that I might, after all, turn into a zombie.

I did. It's true, I did. confused

Aveline Sun 23-Apr-23 18:11:30

I thought the missing child example quoted was great. Just an upgrade to town criers etc

We are too - DH got two alerts and I got none.

As an experiment, it hasn't had 100% success, has it!

growstuff Sun 23-Apr-23 18:36:14

I didn't receive the alert, but I didn't expect to because my smartphone is very old.

bikergran Sun 23-Apr-23 19:12:34

Was working in my Supermarket ( I remarked, we will all know when it is 3.00pm) Plenty of people in the supermarket, heard a few sort of buzzing noises nothing abnormal, then few more about 5 mins later. Was expecting 100s of loud sirens noises going off all at once, but no one really flinched. If I had not been waiting , then I would have thought nothing about it.

Saetana Sun 23-Apr-23 19:20:51

I decided to turn mine back on for the test, mainly because I have a friend who is not confident with his phone so I wanted to be sure I could tell him how to get rid of it if he didn't work it out himself. Mine went off at 3pm promptly, was on the way to the corner shop and could hear others' phones shrieking as well, quickly swiped it away. My friend then texted - not sure if he had got rid of it or not. I said he must have done, otherwise he wouldn't be able to text me grin Have now turned it off again, been reading about these emergency alert systems across the world and there have been a number of false alarms, terrifying people unnecessarily. It seems not all phones got the alert, some issue with the Three network as well as possibly not keeping the operating system up to date. Only 4g and 5g phones could get it in the first place anyway, no 3g or non smart phones. Judging by the comments on the Telegraph website, it was not a massive success - lots of people never got the alert, even if their phone was capable of it.

Spinnaker Sun 23-Apr-23 19:35:54

DH and I are on the same network. My phone is much more up to date than his. I tuned in, he turned off. I didn't receive anything - he did... confused
