I’ve never known such a cold April! 🥶

A couple of hours ago the temp. on the thermometer outside our kitchen window read 7.8 deg. And dh said just now that it’s still only 8. And we’re in outer SW London.

Also, our flowering cherry usually takes about a week from the time the buds begin to open, to full flowering.
This year it’s taken 3 weeks.

I have to say, we’ve certainly had some days when the sun was warm enough to sit in - only as long as there was absolutely no wind - but there hasn’t been even one day when the air has not felt cold. Or very cold.

Having said that, the temp outside our kitchen window as I write (at 20 past 8) is 12.1 - and that’s with no sun - there’s thick white cloud and a fair breeze, so very possibly things are looking up. 🤞

The electric blanket and heated throw (my best friends) - how did I ever manage without them?

Iam64 Fri 28-Apr-23 08:16:56

Karmalady - here in the north west, we didn’t have searing heat (sadly). Our reservoirs are over flowing , it feels as though it’s rained since Christmas. Whoops there I go, grumbling when I said I’d stop.

I looked at the forecast and am ready to hang washing out, it has/is oh so wet in somerset, I mean everywhere is sodden. This morning I see that the house wall bottoms are splashed and there are drips everywhere. The sky overgead is now covered in a huge grey cloud with black in the distance. The forecast has to be right, to clear by 11

I feel partially optimistic and have just removds two layers from my bed covering but am leaving my electric blanket. That linen bedding of mine, it is just languishing in my airing cupboard. Yes I know, don`t cast a clout till may is out, end of may but always, I have changed my bedding to cooler by now

Got to be honest, I would much rather this than the searing heat of last summer

Iam64 Fri 28-Apr-23 08:12:16

I lit the lit burner again at 6 pm. It was warm and comforting with the last log keeping it glowing till,9pm. Yes, I put the electric blanket on so my bed was cozy
This morning, another chilly, grey, wet start to the day. I’ll be wearing layers and my good waterproof when I take the dogs out.
I agree with Hetty58, I’m relieved it isn’t as hot as Spain. So no more grumbling

It's warmer this morning in London. I'm just so very glad that we don't have that awful heatwave weather suffered in Spain and Portugal. We can wrap up warm and do a spot of gardening between the showers.

Yep, another grey and very damp day ahead here in Derbyshire! Glad I bought a hooded puffa jacket a few months ago!

Yesterday was a good imitation of November, cold, murky and a lot of heavy rain.

Today looks little better, thick cloud and a damp outlook. I think it is the unremitting cloud overhead that is so depressing, even if it isn't particularly cold or wet.

Another sunny day here after some rain yesterday. We like the rain here, though. We don’t get enough of it overall and have to water the garden from December through to the end of March.

Bloomin cold and wet in Mevagissey today. I’m off back to my warm apartment withaview todo some painting.

There has not been much thermal radiation from the sun this month, hardly any to warm up the walls and house interiors. In addition to that it has been dismal a lot of the time in the sw, cloud keeping the warming sun rays away. I do remember being able to sit out in the garden much more than this april, maybe three times at most this month

My electric blanket is still on and I am wearing a silk vest and a warm hm merino jumper as well as cosy trousers, hm woollen socks and my slippers. I am looking at day forecasts going forward eg tomorrow looks set fair from late morning and whatever I had planned will be abandoned in favour of me grabbing the chance to go out on a cycle ride

Good heavens. Variable weather in the UK. Who'd have thought it!?

I suppose that’s why we talk about the weather so much. We can have 4 seasons of weather in one day.
In the monsoon season, no one says, “It’s raining today.”

Spoke to a BiL in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday on his birthday - he said they’d had a heavy frost only a night or two previously. But at least they had sun and blue sky - it was solid white cloud all day here.
Temp outside our kitchen window as I write (8 am) is 9.1. So I suppose it could be worse.

Same here, Bluebell. My FB memories today was a photo of my snowy garden either seven or nine years ago.

It went down to 7deg this afternoon after some heavy showers. I wore my gloves as well as my winter coat for the first time for weeks.

More brass monkey weather in Oxfordshire. I cancelled my plans to garden, but did pull some rhubarb to make a nie rhubarb crumble for supper this evening.

My memories popped up today on FB today and it said ‘oh no it’s hailing’ and one of my friends answered ‘it’s snowing with us’ So it’s not the coldest April we ve known

I remember visiting family in England in April and it snowed.

We were rather chilly because we'd taken 'spring clothes'.

Indeed.

Perhaps lemons making lemonade could work for some?

we were sitting outside in the sunshine having coffee this morning in Brighton, warm enough not to need coats.. weird innit..

Mamie Wed 26-Apr-23 14:51:04

We went to the fish market in Ouistreham this morning. Freezing wind off the Channel, 6° and not much fish either!

Much the same here in Nouvelle Aquitaine chilly & wet. I love it, preferable to relentless sunshine and heat.

Indeed. Soon enough people will complain of the heat.

The fields look wonderful. Crops are doing well. Our flowers are blooming and keeping (as when one puts bouquets in the fridge at night). The dogs also hate extreme heat. Nice season.

I do hope it warms before our daughters wedding party - but if not, cater the party in conservatory/sunroom, she'll still be delighted.

It was warm and sunny when I got married in April but I remember that in 2008 it snowed on our anniversary and the dinner was cancelled

Most springs are sunnier (there are the statistics to support that) and we usually get short spells of quite warm sunny weather, and its is these that have been missing this area. Not exceptionally cold, just unremitting.
