I’ve never known such a cold April! 🥶

A couple of hours ago the temp. on the thermometer outside our kitchen window read 7.8 deg. And dh said just now that it’s still only 8. And we’re in outer SW London.

Also, our flowering cherry usually takes about a week from the time the buds begin to open, to full flowering.
This year it’s taken 3 weeks.

Amazed at weather yesterday! It was a Gdd’s birthday so we drove 60 miles (SW London to Oxford) mostly through heavy rain and very grey skies - only to find shortly before arriving that the sun was out, all the children were in the garden, the kitchen bifolds were wide open, and SiL was busy at the barbecue.
Plenty of parents sitting outside all afternoon with wine or a beer!

There were just a few spots towards the end of the afternoon - but at 6 ish we drove back through both very heavy rain and a major hailstorm, with lightning thrown in!

Our local weather station (midlands) has recorded highs of 11 to 14C through April so far which is pretty close to long term average with just one frost. It has been wetter than recent years with gardens and crops enjoying that, however a cold week with frost forecast so wrap up well

Here in my corner of Lincolnshire, the outside temp is 9º but it feels much colder. It's siling down with rain and so dark we have the lights on. SO is huddled under a duvet in his chair and I've turned up the thermostat.
I haven't even uncovered the garden furniture as yet this year and it's starting to feel as though I never will, that spring has been completely by-passed and we'll go from winter to another winter with no let-up.☹️

I’ve not found it unusually cold. I recall having an op in April 2015 and having to wear my big winter coat when I went outside as it was so cold - not done that this year. Then again, lockdown April was glorious!!

March 1974, we put six month old DS on a rug in the garden in a summer romper suit to take photos, I was in a short sleeved dress, and, as I have said in another thread, I am a chilly mortal.

30 May 1976, DD's birthday. It was reported that the temperatures that day were colder than the previous Christmas day. It scuppered our plans for an outdoor birthday party.

This year, it is length of the long cold wet and windy winter/spring that makes it so remarkable and so depressing.

Anyway, just off to wash the inside of the green house and plant my tomatoes.

I can certainly remember driving down the A3 (SE U.K.) in a real blizzard towards the end of the Easter holidays, to buy dds’ summer school uniform. This was around 30 years ago, and IIRC the snow was gone within 24 hours and it was reasonably warm again.

We have had some sunny weather in Midlothian which is nice but not enough to think the cold weather has gone. For gardening purposes we are normally a month or so behind southern England weather wise. It does seem unusual that Scotland has had warmer weather during April than the south.

Cold and wet here in NE Lincs. Yesterday lovely, wind cold, but shed sorted, grass cut. Many years ago, early 70s in Feb, remember sitting outside in the hot sun, Wiltshire. Then another year, waking up in April, to thick snow. All my plants seem to be growing as usual, and my flowering cherry was true to form.

Ditto with the tomatoes and cucumbers for me MOnica, but we’re down to 2 on Tuesday night, I’ll pot them on and bring them in, again.

The day did warm up and mid-afternoon I got the outside of the green house cleaned. The inside can be done tomorrow, regardless of the weather.

I'm on hols in the Scottish borders and trying to see a beautiful ruined Abbey through thick fog!!! It is cold and very damp. Thank goodness the cottage is cosy.sad

It's really lovely and sunny here today.. no winds..

M0nica Sat 22-Apr-23 14:44:55

I intended to clean the green house this morning, buckets of water and water everywhere. On waking the outside temprature was 2C. So I didn't, just like almost every day this week.

I have tomato plants in the utility room, growing bigger and bigger - and aubergines. Too cold to leave outside.

Being realistic at my age I don’t know how many more Springs I’ve will have, so cold or warm, rain, dry, sun or snow, I’m pleased with anything 😀

Grey and wet here on Tyneside today, with the temperature struggling to get into double figures, and with a cool breeze. Blossom seems late here too.

Greyduster Sat 22-Apr-23 11:06:32

We had snow here in South Yorkshire in April 2018. This year is mild by comparison, but yes, it could be warmer!

Witzend Sat 22-Apr-23 11:02:27

It’s been sunny on and off here, and it can feel warm if you’re sitting in it with no wind, but the air is still cold, and the wind the other day was decidedly cold!
I’m dreaming of the day when you go outside and the air is soft and warm!

A Gdd’s birthday is tomorrow, and for just about every other birthday I can remember, it’s been much warmer - just about all her birthday parties have taken place out of doors.

glammagran Fri 21-Apr-23 23:21:33

Last April 24th my DGS2 had his first birthday party on a hot sunny afternoon. He turned 2 today and his party tomorrow will be a very different day weather wise with a max temp forecast at 11c and rainy so yes, pretty cold. However, though last April was sunny there were quite a few frosty nights in south England in the early days of the month.

SueDonim Fri 21-Apr-23 23:06:26

16.5deg here in Scotland this afternoon and wall to wall sunshine. The wind got up this afternoon, though, and that had quite a nip in it.

I think this good spell breaks down tomorrow, unfortunately.

Hetty58 Fri 21-Apr-23 22:57:43

Here (NE London/Essex) there was, at least, one warm day - as I found my summer jacket and went out in it. I thought about putting the winter coats etc. away, so I'm glad I didn't.

'Ne're cast a clout til May be out' is so true.

Yesterday was cold here on the Suffolk East coast- so much so I added a fleece blanket to our spring duvet, on our bed.

Today was warmer, sunny and lovely sitting in our naff conservatory.

Temps not going to be great over the weekend it would seem.

Reminds me of Easter weekend 1981, which was very sunny and warm. The following weekend, we got married on Saturday the 25th April. It had snowed for 3 days previously. The snow had gone, more or less, on our wedding day, but it was bitterly cold. That was in the NW of England.

Marmight Fri 21-Apr-23 19:13:16

Cool in South Devon. I wore a fleece over a thick jumper on my constitutional this morning. Yesterday I sat on the beach in a T shirt. I’ve just given in and turned the heating on.

grannydarkhair Fri 21-Apr-23 19:00:06

I’m in Dundee and we’ve had lovely sunny weather over the last few days, although there’s still a wee nip in the air if you’re in the shade. I’ve not needed a coat for the last three days when out. My heating is off apart from 30 minutes in the early morning and again at bedtime, I’ve been going around in a short sleeved t-shirt indoors.

Georgesgran Fri 21-Apr-23 18:42:32

I’m in the North East. My phone says 10 degrees - it lies! It’s really cold, heating is on and I’m in my long fleece gown and thermal slippers! Not a vision of loveliness, but I don’t really care.

Yes, come evening and the 🌞 shineth!
